Golden Cycling Club presents the 10th Annual Mt 7 PSYCHOSIS!
May 24, 2008Published by bruleThe World's Most Demented Downhill Mountain Bike Race-A Decade to Go Down in Mountain Bike History!
July 4th, 5th and 6th 2008 will mark the tenth and final Psychosis as it exists today. This is last call for the world's finest racers and riders and a final opportunity for everyone to take part in this legendary event; Psychosis is the race that started it all. Ten years ago, Golden, BC Canada was home to a race so different that officials did not know how to classify it. Since then, Endurance Downhill racing has been born and IMBA once classified Psychosis as the longest “all singletrack” downhill race in the world. Then in 2005, Red Bull dubbed it “The world's Most Demented Downhill Race”...Today it is listed as one of Sam Hill's career accomplishments. Highlighted by the odd BASE jump and burnout competition, you shouldn't miss this historic weekend as North America's premier downhill mountain bike race drops its last start. The atmosphere created by the volunteers of this event; with the continuous help of supporters like Red Bull, SRAM, Rock Shox, Calgary Cycle, Chromag, Cycles Lambert, NRG, and all the shops in the western Alberta / East Kootenay region, are what still make this event real and authentic a decade later. Psychosis has become what it is thanks to the people who thrive on the true essence of DH racing. With over 4000ft of vertical single track descending and a total of over $13,000 in cash prizes, riders and spectators from around the world need to make their way to Golden, BC in order to challenge each other, and themselves down the longest, toughest, steepest single track downhill course out there. Check out the photo galleries at www.psychosis.ca or the new Collective Film “Seasons” for a quick preview. A $5,000 first place men's prize and a $1,500 first place women's prize doesn't come easy. In 2006, a sustained scree-slope surf, multiple rock drops, a 40ft air are what were conquered to near perfection by Tyler Morland when he set a new course record beating out legends Nathan Rennie and Kris Kovarik with a time of 12:58:33. In 2007, Sam Hill did the same to beat out Steve Smith and 3 time champ Tyler Morland with a course time of 12:49:00 and Kevin Phelps set a new Hardtail course record for his third season beating out the complete sport field. How will this final story unfold? Who will be the last Psychosis champion? This year's final event will see; The Launch Pad start race on Saturday and the midway start (5k) on Sunday with the farewell Psychosis party on Saturday night with live music. Food, beer gardens and suppliers will be on-site to take care of all your social and event needs along with volunteers, Red Bull girls and a whole lot of happy campers. Don't miss “A decade of Psychosis” to be presented of Friday evening TBA. Log on to www.psychosis.ca and www.goldencyclingclub.com for more information, race categories and registration. Space is limited with only 150 starts for Saturday's race and 100 starts for Sunday's mid-way race. In the words of Brad Ewan; “Come see how we roll in Golden”, see you on Mt.7! first comment and it sounds pretty bomb
i think we can ALL tell that its the first comment
"Kevin Phelps set a new Hardtail course record for his third season..."
Holy Shit.
Holy Shit.
what was the hardtail record??
this race looks mean!!
this race looks mean!!
damn, why is it ending?
wow wat a gay remake of the song. i hope i can go watch this year living only and hour away!!
Holy crap how steep is the steepest?
Watch seasons... there is a section on this and it's DOPE
Looks like fun, wish I could be there.
It's ENDING !!!! WTf.
mt. 7 kick's ass.
mt. 7 kick's ass.
it says, THIS YEARS final event, not THE final event
If you read the first few lines you'll haver read "July 4th, 5th and 6th 2008 will mark the tenth and final Psychosis as it exists today." Sounds pretty final, which is a bummer. I may have to make the trek up from Bellingham to see my first and last. Always wanted to do a little interior BC riding (though I don't know if this qualifies as 'interior', maybe Eastern? since it's dang near in Alberta). Love the grassroots support!
ya but notice how it says as it exists today, maybe they r gonna change it. that mite be sic if they do!
Anyone who rides Mt 7 has my respect :-)
thats the steepest part in the picture with the rider number 58 in it. dead dog, its the first slope you go down. definately worth the trip so everyone should come, its a great race and ride.
This is the hardest downhill race I've ever done. It's steep, loose, rocky, dusty and fast all at the same time. Dead dog when it's dry is so steep that there's nothing you can do but accelerate. My friend broke most of ribs during practice last year and he's done the race for years.
It's the only race I've done and it was crazy tough. I only rode dead dog once and that was my race run... FAIL
why isn't it on the b.c cup
WOW, Sam Hill beat the record by 9 seconds!!
He's too good
He's too good
I have riden it soooooo sweet !!!!
mt.7 is real mountain biking imho. fun, scary, pure, mountain bike riding on a non resort mountain where the collective atmosphere/ attitude is a thousand yard stare and a shit eating grin. sad that its not a race anymore but really i like it as a simple bike ride in itself. golden is rad. its on my yearly to do list. non locals would do well do include it in their BC tour.
I've never seen Mt.7 in person, it looks pretty hard, but Face trail makes it look easy. If you don't know what I'm talking about watch Richard Landcaster in Chainsmoke 2
Weird version of kickstart my heart!
Awesome course, wish I could ride it (and probably fail lol but you can try)

sm hill, if hes there, should win it again. hes unbeatable
go sam go
go sam go
Steve SMith beat him at the US Open today!
I still have a highroller burn tattoed into my inner thigh from 4 years ago in a nasty bail I took on dead dog during the main event. There's not a sport or expert racer out there that hasn't eaten it on one section of this course or another. If you want to see what kind of a rider you are there's not many tests better than seeing how you place at Mount 7, and now is your last chance!
dont think sam hill beat the record time just fastest that day. tyler morland holds the fastest posted time im pretty sure.
Nope, Sam Hill has the record. 12min49sec.
must be a long run cos half of them have their dinner plates on the front of their bikes , shame its ending though,,tis the trouble with dh racing now days.
yeah boys im a local up there and its the end they just cant find enough volunteers to put in the fine time to run it year after year. It sucks but no one else comes out
first redbull rampage, now this? what is the big mtn. riding coming to??
went to mt.7 last summer just for fun...haha. got caught at the top of dead dog in snow and thought it was a good idea anyways. this was the first hill that ive ever had to walk a section and crashed doing that. if you want a gnarly challenge show up at the race this summer
Rode this on a hardtail with v-brakes and I can honestly say I have never had more fun going down a hill in my entire life, that is until I hit a kicker and tacoed my rear rim. Top section, I guess they call it the Dead Dog or whatever is quite steep, but ya just lean back and hold on.
wats with the dinner plates on the bikes?
Thats what you call old-school racing numbers. Classic.
ya right you did not ride Mt 7 with v brakes.
the pads would be on fire by the time you got to the bottom
I rode it with 6' mechanical shimanos. V-brakes would be doable. crazy but doable.
No. Sam Hill holds the record time on Mt.7. almost 30 seconds faster then Morland.
It is the Final Psychosis being put on by Red Bull and The Golden Cycling Club. We're working on continuing the legacy. The race went on for many years without Redbull.
I think it could only get better with somone elses perspective on it. There should be Bands and more of a festival surrounding it.

Sam's Time was 12:49. Morlands record was 12:59 in 2006 beating Rennie & Kovarik at 13:12 and 13:13 respectively...I know cause I was in the same second as Kovarik...something I doubt I'll ever repeat. Breaking 13:30 has only been accomplised by Andrew Mitchel (Cove), Tyler Morland (SRAM), Rennie (Syndicate), Kovarik (intense),Amiel Cavalier and Steve Smith (Cove) and Myself...and I'm a nobody, so anyone can contend this race...it's psychosis weird stuff happens riding 3806ft over 5.92km trail with a 200m rise hike-a-bike. How's that for some stats, ha ha.
I'm doing it this year (hopefully).
I rode it with v-brakes on a Kona Hei-Hei hardtail with Rock Shox Judy DH (the first year they came out, the red ones) forks man.
damn, i wish i could come up there!
i did something similar today at a local mountain that got burned in a wildfire... i just blasted down all 2500 feet of it and nearly sh*t my pants when i got in to the rocks that outnumbered visible dirt going 20mph!!!
easily the scariest thing i've ever done, and now i'm hooked!
damn i want to go to this

my brakes stayed noticably hot for about 10 minutes after i got to the bottom
it was so f-in scary
iw ana do it !! looks amazing, some big organization like rebull shud do a mountain run liek scale a hole mountain in the fastest time that wud be SICK
Another interesting stat about Sam's 2007 winning run...he only prerode the course 1.5 times...how's that for trusting your confidence in corners you can't even remember...
Didn't know that. Incredible.
