Brendan Fairclough moves on from Monster Energy / Specialized

by Tyler Maine
Nov 1, 2011 at 13:23

After four successful seasons with Monster Energy race programs, it's come time to announce that Brendan Fairclough (GBR) is moving on following the conclusion of the 2011 race season.

Team manager Sean Heimdal discussed the fun that "Brendawg" brings to the track every week. "Brendan’s charisma on and off the bike will be missed. There’s not many riders as talented in the world that are as much fun to watch on a bike. His style speaks volumes of the fun you know he’s always having." Heimdal added: "Brendan's been riding in the shadows of the world's fastest riders for his entire career, now it's time for him to rise up and take his racing to another level. We all wish him the best with his ACL recovery this off-season and look forward to seeing him throwing it sideways in 2012."

Brendan was retrospective when speaking about his years with the team. "Right then, this is a bit sad for me to be honest. The last four years of my life I've been riding for debatably the most professional and decorated team on the circuit. It's been amazing and I have been treated very well and have some amazing memories. I have see the team change over the years all for the better and will be sad to leave. I’ve been fortunate to have a good opportunity that I want to take up for 2012, will be a change, but change can be good. I will be stealing a lot from what I have learned over the last four year from the whole team and putting it into my 2012 preparation."

Specialized Bicycles had this to say about the move. “We are sad to see Brendan leave the team, but we are also excited for him and the new opportunities. Brendan gave us great feedback on our bikes and equipment, and helped make them what they are today. We must support Brendan’s choice to go his own way and grow as an individual. He has a long career ahead of him and we wish him the very best.”

Brendan's final parting words; "Good luck to the team, Sam and Troy... mostly for when I come back next year with two good legs to stand on the podium with them!"

Fairclough's final destination is not yet ready to be announced.

We’d like to thank the following companies for their continued support: Monster Energy, Specialized Bicycles, Mad Catz, SRAM, Truvativ, RockShox, Avid, DT Swiss, SDG, Renthal, Troy Lee Designs, Maxima, Cane Creek, e-thirteen, Five Ten, Alligator, Obtainium, Freestyle, Kicker, KMC.

Monster Energy supports the scene. Be it MTB, trials, boardercross, MX, SX, surfing, BMX, go-karts, pit bikes, mountain bikes, PWC racing, off road, rally, insane distance jumping, MotoGP, road racing, supermoto, FMX, skate, rock crawling, wake, surf, ski – name it – seems athletes and bands are rockin' Monster Energy more than anything these days. www.monsterenergy.com

Leaving the Monster team probably means he's leaving monster. Tld is a team sponsor as well so it kind of goes as a package I would assume.
So no, I would think he gets different sponsors, depending on what team he rides with.

Those are all good/interesting comments and feedback

Not saying this is even remotely likely, but I'd like to see him sign with CRC/Nukeproof or Kona Factory Team - both which could use a top 5 podium earning rider. At least CRC would be more local and I know Kona has a talented Junior (Fearon) but they could use an elite men's champ as well. Both teams have the funding to put a flagship rider at all the WC venues.

this racer has had the best equipment/resources/sponsors/support from the dh industry and he in reality has no real top 3 results to show for all the $upport.
continuing to back this racer in the same capacity that he has been since he was a jr, just ain't making dollars and sense anymore.
smart business move by the team.

At the end of the day its nots all about results. Its about how much media the rider gets for a brand. Brendan is well known by everyone. He can choose any team he wants to be honest...

i mean really, sam hill and troy b. must be well paid, thats a part of it too....2 salaries must be hefty, 3 might be impossible. especially considering what troy b. threw down last season.
general exposure is important, but in racing, well its about your win/loss percentage and your starts vs podium ratios when it come to making big bucks and being on certain rosters/teams.
tough biz racing. whats the old saying,.. the top 5 to 10 make all the money, the rest barely survive?

And Sam Hill going to Trek. That I really can't see happening. I can't see Sam going to another team to be the No.2 rider. Although, there is the argument that Sam might be the No.2 rider with team Monster Energy Specialized.

flag harriieee (Nov 1, 2011 at 15:42) (Below Threshold) show comment
He's had "potential" since 2007. There's been no progress in results since 2009. Before anyone says it's due to injuries, barring the ACL snap (which in my experience isn't actually that serious for riding a bike - I'm rehabbing one myself at the moment) he's been pretty fortunate with them actually.

Someone has to question his work ethic sooner or later....
  • + 45
flag cloverleaf Plus (Nov 1, 2011 at 15:56)
Unless you actually know him I don't think you have any grounds on which to base your criticism of his 'work ethic' - I don't think that the work ethic of any top World Cup rider could be questioned. He's also a damned nice guy and a fantastic ambassador to have as the face of the sport or any team. Secondly, snapped ACL's and the other injuries that he's been able to ride with may not be that serious if you're just riding round your local woods on a Sunday afternoon with your mates but there is a hell of a difference between that and racing on the world stage, on big tracks, and against other riders of very similar ability who are injury free. There are a lot of riders up there capable of doing well but injuries have a major impact on their ability to showcase results.

Final post, as I don't want to start a bitch war.

In every interview I've read with him in Dirt or Bike, etc, he says he hates training cardio. He says he hates going out to train skills in the rain or mud. That's what I'm basing my opinion on, not just the fact that he hasn't done quite as well in the past two years as some thought he would. After Hill ripped out his RC in '10, he won the World Champs. In '07, Minnaar wrecked his shoulder and still came fourth. Steve Peat won races with a spiral fracture to his finger. It's obviously all relative, he must work hard for it, but whether he's up there with that kind of intensity and will to win, I just don't know. And I'm not convinced thus far.

I'm done. I'll accept my negative props and stop posting speculative shit now. Pure 2 cents

Now think How many Demo 8s you see at a race or on the trail? I think Brendawg will turn Scott around from what it is in my eyes at the moment, sort of more corporate and boring, into what Specialized are now.. Cool, young, Just sexy fast... Needles,Hart, Fairclough in 2012 would really raise the Team's exposure. If Hart has a year like everyone thinks he's going too, It's gonna be fireworks next year!! Cannot wait!

Sure you guys may fantasize about him being on Giant, but he wants to be put on a team where he will be the best, not competing against his peers like needles, or even Danny.

Scott would be an interesting choice for him, they can definitely afford him and his training.

You guys may look down on the Gambler, but you honestly have to ride one before you say something. Kinda like "don't jugde a book by it's cover" I have owned many bikes, and I still keep going back to the Gambler, they weight is it's only weakness.

He's not going to go to Giant or santa Cruz. There's no way he'll head to another team where he has to play second fiddle to a World Champ or World Cup winner. It'll be scott for sure and I reckon he'll flourish by not being the team number 2.

 Good Luck B
He may be better off signing a 1 year deal for the 2012 season with a 'smaller' team, getting some results, and then see what opens up for 2013. It seems like a win-win. The smaller team gets a great 'named' WC rider who certainly has the skilll and the ability to podium and if B does well next year, he may show some loyalty and stay with the 'smaller' team because they showed that they wanted him with his stock wasn't the highest. If he decides to go elsewhere after potentially having a solid 2012 season with podium finishes, the money and the 'big' teams will also be an option.............kinda like when Gwin rode well for Yeti and Trek came a calling.

Good Luck in 2012 B!

flag Patsplit (Nov 1, 2011 at 14:01) (Below Threshold) show comment
Totally the team's decision to not renew his contract. Only WC Overall and World champs (at least top 5) can stay on elite teams like Monster Specialized. It is a lot of pressure to perform or show great potential over the course of a 2 year contract; otherwise, you'll be privateering from the back of the pack with only the support of your mum. Evnetually, sponsors realise that you don't have what it takes to be on the top. Let's hope he proves them wrong.

On another note, why doesn't Brendog just be a freerider like Matt Hunter or Vanderham? He is good at racing, but he obviously enjoys whipping more. He always came off as a Negative Nancy to me in post-race interviews. If you're not going to train harder then try something else.
  • + 9
flag KennyKillsIt (Nov 1, 2011 at 14:06)
I think it was in 3 minute gaps that he said he was tired of being just another cool whip....or something along those lines. Dont hold me to this. So it's safe to say he's hungry for more, i mean just look at that farewell quote. Got me all stoked
  • + 2
flag andytheaussie (Nov 1, 2011 at 14:08)
I hear what you're saying about the negative Nancy thing but I really just think that was because he was frustrated this year. You could tell he was struggling to deal with his injury and I read an interview with him where he was asked why he didn't have his operation sooner and bin the 2011 season. His answer was simple. If he didn't race, he didn't get paid. Overall I think he's got a positive attitude but was struggling to come to terms with the poor results he got this year on account of his injury.

Fact: brendan is going to go on a big company that has funding because he is a top 10 rider and a top 5 rider when he is healthy
Fact 2: Brendan is one of te most popular riders and most watched rider because of his style and attitude. Sponsors would love to have him under their belts.
So he is going to go to a bigger company not a small one( orange, yeti, cove, Etc..)

I see that there has been allot of talk about where Brendon will end up. I see allot of comments for Scott and Giant. Personally, after reading his feature interview in Dirt Magazine, I think he wants to be the No.1 guy of a team. He has not been that for a team and I got the impression that that's what he wants.

With that said, I can't see him going to Giant with Danny Hart being their No.1. Can't see him at Trek (Gwin). Can't see him at Devinci (Stevie Smith). And I can't see him going to Evil with Brook MacDonald being the No1 guy on that team. I cant see him going to Lapierre with Blenky and Cam Cole (Who in the 2010 season really surprised some people). There is also KHS, but they have Logan who beat out Gwin at US nationals, so cant see that either.

That leaves out possibilities with Scott, Mondraker, Kona and Rockie Mountain. Then you have the wildcard of CRC. For Scott, I think that the team would like to have a No1 guy that can be on the podium as well as Kona. Rockie Mountain have had success on the womens side with Sabrina and maybe it would be a good fit with a very good Men's Elite rider. Fabien Borel announced his retirement earlier and they might be interested in getting him.

Then there is the wildcard Team CRC. I know that last year they reduced their roster and Nigel Page has said that he would like for the roster to stay the same. But on the other hand, he has also talked about supporting riders from the UK.

These are just my opinions on what I have read on forums.

Really interesting and I cant wait to see where he ends up.

If the athertons are moving it will be to a team that have a solid all-mountain/enduro bike for dan to race aswell as a good dh bike for gee and rach, as theres no chance he'll be back on the dh circuit next year, and they'll also have to have enough money to support brand atherton, as it isnt just them racing, its a team manager, 2 mechanics, a guy for physio and a proper doctor amongst other people helping out. so really its down to trek, gt, spesh or commencal, as there the only companys with the budget and bikes.

As for brendog, scott 11 all the way, they're a very big company in europe, have a decent team as it is, with florian being on the podium most races, they're just missing a top male up on the podium, they already have a wc team so adding another guy isnt gonna damage the bank too much, and having someone like him on the team is gonna sell shit-loads of gamblers/voltages, so theres gonna be a nice bonus in it for him come the end of the season.

All this excessive, baseless speculation for an relatively average World Cup racer is surprising, but sorta entertaining. I'd like to see him win a World Cup some day, and I know he wants to win one, but he's not even clipped in for christ sakes. You have to be clipped in to compete with Gwin, period. You lose too much time in the pedal sections that you can't make up somewhere else cause Gwin is going just as fast there too.

He should buy his own V10 and race as a privateer if Santa Cruz won't pay him.

Im going with Scott 11 lead rider and a new carbon DH platform from Scott

Scott would be a good team for him. He would certainly be the best on the team. Intense bikes would be cool also but I doubt thats even in the picture. I have a feeling he would do something from his home area, but it is what it is.

KHS doesn't have the funding to send their current top tear riders to world cups, what makes you think they have the money to sign brendog, then send him to world cups with the support he needs to be competitive.

ummm, I highly doubt it, seeing as they have ben doing well in the past n commencal and they've had 2012 commencal/animal outfits delivered to them AND that GT already has a decently stacked team :/ just stating facts. Brendan needs to go on the lapierre team, or even yeti ?? they could use a new top end rider seeing as Gwin has been gone for awhile, along with all the others
