Australian BMX world champion fighting for his life after jumping from balcony into a pool (but missing) in daredevil stunt
By RICHARD SHEARS

A world champion BMX bike rider is in a critical condition in hospital after trying to jump into a swimming pool from a balcony - and missing. Australian Dane Searls, who was celebrating a new riding record, hit the concrete beside the pool head first, suffering severe head and back injuries. Just 48 hours earlier, 23-year-old Mr Searls had created a new dirt bike world record with a series of four jumps across wide gaps.

Extreme sportsman hurt in balcony dive - BMX star in coma after missing pool

Extreme sportsman Dane Searls is in a coma with severe head and back injuries after trying to jump into a pool from the balcony of a Gold Coast nightclub. BMX rider Dane Searls risked life and limb on Friday to set a world record jumping gaps of up to 18 metres, but it was his celebrations 48 hours later that left him in a coma fighting for his life. Searls, 23, was partying at Billy’s Beach House in Surfers Paradise when he tried to dive into a pool from a first floor balcony last night. He missed and instead hurtled head first into the cement below.

 Brutal...
I grew up on the Gold Coast and partied alot at Billy's Beach House...
I know exactly where this is and the pool is actually pretty big... He must have come up short...

here is a shot of the pool for context. http://www.billysbeachhouse.com.au/home.aspx

WTF he was thinking, I dont know...

Get well soon Dane...

People like Dane and a lot of us live for the moment.
Be it ridiculous gaps, really good sushi or boosting balconies into pools.
Sometimes we overshoot the gap, the fish ain't fresh or we miss the pool.
The gods can be fickle.
Healing vibes to Dane.

@sapiensam - your attempt at humor is lost in this moment of tragedy - the only thing that hasn't evolved here is you, idiot; indeed jumping into a pool from his balcony may not have been the wisest thing to do but we have ALL done and said
things in moments of youth, so i'm sure even Darwin will forgive you your comment...

Off course only that stuff is allowed didn't you know? It's not only allowed, it is a right thing to do, everytime someone gets hurt you ought to feel sorry and show your support, it gives a lot to a person who just got injured. It also gives people around a better feeling about themselves as they can be compassionate. So I don't know what is your problem, I think you are not fitting in quite frankly.

Reading about a fail like that is always disturbing, I wish him and all of us, that he comes back strong very soon, with a video telling us about his way to recovery and plans for the future, so we can all be inspired.

Now seriously... I hate PC and I am highly sceptical of people showing compassion on one side and then "attacking" anyone who gives a slight notion of having a different point of view. A bit of a: such a tragedy - let's be good people from now on, let's do just good things, let's support hurt ones, it's such a good thing to do. Not like truth, which puts us in a very uncomfortable situation - we might need to criticize and critique is negative - so truth ain't good - we gonna have to put you down sir!

Sorry, being a cynical arsehole is my way of dealing with situations in which I can't actualy do anything, and a way of attacking those who I believe are doing a wrong thing, like those with "show off" compassion. I feel sorry for the guy, he was unlucky, jumping to a pool (sober or not) is probably not even close to dangers of doing what he does on his bike while being perfectly sober. However everytime something like this happens, guy jumping drunk into pool from a balcony, a kid breaking his neck on dirt jumps because he tried something way too big, someone else smashing his head into pavement without a helmet, it makes me wonder: what were those great buddies doing before this happened?

"dude don't do it" is said way to rarely I think. But that's another could have whould have should have bladi bla. I think it's good to believe that everything happens for a good reason, so let's hope he and his close ones come out stronger out of this. "Enabled" as Stacy said in some vid - I know sht about being in such situation but I will always remember what you said, it was a truly great thought, no vaseline

i think you missed the point of most who do not appreciate someone here stating the obvious about 'it' being a stupid thing to jump into a pool from his balcony, and this is the point : Dane was NOT stupid, what he DID was stupid - and as for the truth, there is a time and place for truth to be stated especially when it is peppered with sarcasm and ill will - the real truth here is : Dane is dead and i am CERTAIN, not one of us who prefers to send condolences rather than biting criticisms, is unaware of the stupidity of jumping into a pool drunk from a balcony, the difference is : we do not have a need to puff up our chest and rooster on about something that at best IS obvious to us all, and at worst, a life cut short because of a 'moment' of bad judgment - so save your wise lecture AND vaseline for the living, and TRY to recognize your own stupidity instead of laying it on the passing of Dane ...i am, if you haven't figured it out, suggesting you point your wisdom in the right direction and educate the living [ start a workshop etc ] about the dangers of alcohol and stupidity; it's a little late for your railing on Dane - this was an opportunity to give condolences and not, a mean spirited 'point of view' - and BTW if you hate PB [ PC ? ] so much, why not cancel your account and take your hate with you.

still leads to alot of bad things. You are gona get addicted adventuly. My dads side of the family are all alcoholics. Its just stupid to think that drinking isent bad for you or people around you. Thats like saying you can smoke cigaretts and not get cancer...it just doesnt work like that. You can never drink responsibly as soon as you get drunk.

flag Piks-Liks (Nov 23, 2011 at 9:10)
You actually can smoke cigarettes and not get cancer. It's a probability thing.

And let's keep preaching about abstinence off of PB. After all, there are people out there who think biking carries too much risk, from commuting to DH. Luckily I'm not one of em.

flag downhillonaharo (Nov 23, 2011 at 16:25)
So if someone gets hurt biking should it be said "That's what they get. They shouldn't have been riding bikes,"? It all depends if you are responsible about it. If you know your parents/relatives have a past of alcoholism, best thing to do is avoid alcohol. Just like if you know you are absolutely terribly coordinated and get hurt doing everything you do, you should make sure you're properly equipped with protection and be responsible about what you do if you are going for a bike ride. Should biking be banned because there have been cases where people have been injured because they didn't wear proper equipment or tried something that wasn't within their skill set?

flag dher0521 (Nov 23, 2011 at 17:14)
not really the best example man... Biking you are in control of your self and are clearly thinking...when you are drunk you are not thinking stright therefore you judgment is flawed. Drinking to get drunk is dangrous no matter how you want to twist it. It cause your body damage. Not to mention lots of people who drink to get drunk end up doing things they regret and/or end up hurting people. I worked as a club promotor for 18+/21+ nights at my local club and at least 3 times a night someone would get arrested IN THE CLUB for some liquor related crime (abuse, sexual harrasment, fights, stealing or just plain getting alc posioning.) Go work in a club for a few months then tell me drinking isent bad...And this wasent some dive bar. Heres a link to 2 of the clubs we did events at if you don't beleive me: http://www.skyultralounge.com/ http://clubfusionseattle.ning.com/ Either way you spin it drinking and biking are NOTHING alike and shouldent be compaired. You are in control of what you deside to try when you are biking. You are NOT in control when you are drunk.

dher i bet you one of those guys that thinks weed is bad for you too. If you know your limits when you drink you will be fine, its when you go past them that causes trouble. It's the same with biking, if you bike outside of your ability level then there is a chance that you might get f*cked up.

flag downhillonaharo (Nov 24, 2011 at 12:42)
I'm not arguing about drinking to get drunk. That absolutely dangerous no matter what. I'm talking about generally drinking. When you start drinking you aren't drunk. You have to make that choice first. There's plenty of people who have just one drink with dinner and don't get anywhere near drunk. You are in complete control when you start drinking, you only lose control when you make the choice that you want to drink enough to get drunk. I don't think you understood what I was trying to get at. I never will drink because I don't see the point and know that chances are it'd lead to problems for me, but what I am saying is there's nothing wrong with drinking when it's responsible, such as a glass of wine or a beer every now and then.

Downhillonaharo: I can agree with that but most people that drink drink to get drunk.. and Brett236 weed is bad for you...I dont care what you are smoking it IS going to do some harm to your lungs. Breathing in smoke is never good for you no matter what you say. I use to smoke alot and do drugs then I relized it gets you no where and went to rehab then started racing. Now I got 3 sponsors and am riding with the best riders in my area and am on the track to become pro in the near future . Drugs are never going to get you anywhere in life I can promise you that. I have acomplished more in the last 2 years of being sober then I have in my whole life. I promise you there are NO pro races that smoke or do hard drugs. You are an retarted if you think that drugs wont affect your life for the worse. Just remember that when your life starts falling apart from using. I have been there and its not a good road to go down. Dont be ignorant and think that weed is good for you. In fact just go listen to the song other side by mackle more. I found that song a few weeks before I went to rehab and it helped me get through the hell of addiction. I hope none of you have to go through that. It is a terrible thing to lose your family, friends and other loved ones all at once just because you wanted to get high.

As for drinking, its just bad for you. I'm not against drinking like on a weekend who cares if you get drunk, but it causes you to do stupid shit and not use your brain.

I don't support drinking and rarely drink, but I support people who have a bit of a good time, unfortunately accidents happen, but I guess it is better to be exposed to some risks, than just sitting at home watching TV or even worse: trying to accuse someone causes accidents because you are a little 18 year old prick who tries to pump his self esteem..  Drinking and driving is dumb. You don't know what a drunk dumb person is going to do. He could get behind the wheel, pick a fight, rob somebody, or jump off a balcony. You people should take this as a lesson learned. If you drink irresponsibly this could be you. Know your limits. Also it's sad you think the only to have fun is being drunk or drinking. There is more to life then drinking. I also noticed your age, I'm sure this is going in one ear and out the other, you think you know everything. Have a nice life, I'm going to go ride now.
