FOX Racing Shox has a deep heritage in off road racing and they wanted to share some of that with us during the Outdoor Demo. From huge bypass shocks on their Baja trucks to the much smaller RP23 air shocks on our bikes, FOX is about racing and developing products that stand up to those rigors. Aaron Larocque and I had the pleasure of traveling from Las Vegas, NV to Sandy Valley, CA to experience first hand what it is like to drive a desert racing buggy. The buggies were all equipped with FOX Racing shocks and ready for action.

Rip Off the Strip with Fox racing shox.

The buggies awaiting to be test driven by all the invited media and industry personnel at the Sandy Valley Race Track.

Rip Off the Strip with Fox racing shox.

The course that was laid out was close to a mile in length and featured everything one needed to really get a feel for how the buggies handled desert terrain.

Rip Off the Strip with Fox racing shox.

I had the pleasure of piloting this machine for three laps to what may be a top life experience from the motor side of my world.

Rip Off the Strip with Fox racing shox.

Look at the size of these shocks - you won't find these on the average pick up truck.

Rip Off the Strip with Fox racing shox.

Dave Weagle was also in the house and having an amazing time.

Rip Off the Strip with Fox racing shox.

Light em up Dave!

Once we'd experienced what the buggies were capable of in our own hands, it was time to hit the road again to see what a full scale Prerunner was capable of in the hands of a professional driver. We stopped in Goodsprings, NV where we were piloted across the desert by FOX Racing Shox' resident professional offroad driver, John Marking in a 680hp Prerunner.

Rip Off the Strip with Fox racing shox.

Work first, then play. Aaron stands perched atop a hill waiting to capture the Prerunner as it blasts across the parched landscape.

Rip Off the Strip with Fox racing shox.

John Marking loads up everyone two at a time for an 80 mile an hour rip through the rough.

Rip Off the Strip with Fox racing shox.

Look at that dust trail - this truck is going over 80 miles an hour at this point.

Rip Off the Strip with Fox racing shox.

One word - BRAP!

Rip Off the Strip with Fox racing shox.

Aaron and I's day just kept getting better and I couldn't help but walk around with a silly grin on for hours! It was our turn to hold on.

Rip Off the Strip with Fox racing shox. Ya I just rode in that

Ya, I was just in there!

For those of you reading, you may be wondering what this has to do with the bikes that we ride? It is facets of the FOX Racing Shox company like the Offroad Racing division that often initialize technologies that trickle down into what we as bikers get to experience on a daily basis. FOX Racing Shox has a very passionate cycling division and they are able to progress and evolve the suspension that we love on our bikes thanks to other sectors on their company.

Thanks to FOX Racing Shox and Zero One Odysseys for putting together a great day in the desert that we won't soon forget.

raptors are cool cuz you get a decent truck with a warranty....but if you're getting one to try and go fast in the dez, not gonna happen, better off starting from scratch for that kinda money..
  • + 1
flag GuidaGuida (Sep 15, 2011 at 17:43)
theres alot of paths you can take on wheather you wanna buy a truck or build one up but in the end, it all comes down to personally preference. in a way, that raptor is better because it has the best of both worlds. everyday driver and desert/terrain capability. building from scratch is good too.
  • + 1
flag KTownRoyster (Sep 15, 2011 at 18:58)
Ha warranty??? yeah if you keep it on the street. any sign of offroad voids the warranty. thats where they get ya! best to build from scratch with 30in long travel and leave the raptors little 13in for your kids power wheels.

Ive been around the off roading industry for a while and have learned that Trphy trucks and chase trucks are for disposable income lol. And the buggies are called BC or baja challenge cars and basically made for anyone to drive, you can even rent them form a place called Wide open. My brother use to woek at wide open and fabed on he m and drove them, he says there fun but slow. Fellas stick to bikes cuz there chaeper and trucks ohnestly suck cuz its a never ending project, or a money pit. Unless u have dispospal income lol.

Raptors are rad, I jumped 2 of them on the test drive. Sure iI could get a dixon Bros kit for my ranger and give it more travel but it'd drive much worse everywhere else where as a raptor cruises on the highway soothly and quietly at 85+mph. I don't need a trophy truck I need a pick up I can occasionally get a little crazy with. I need to put things like bikes and motos in the bed, not just shock towers and a spare tire

Ahhh, the 4th gen Hilux. 100hp! Seating for 2 small adults! Self-destructing body panels!

I had an '88 4Runner (basically the same truck, just in SUV trim) and sometimes I really miss it. But then I just go for a drive in my Raptor and I stop missing that under-powered bucket of rust pretty quickly.

flag socalshreder (Sep 16, 2011 at 16:07)
oh god. Raptors are coo cuz they still hav a bed, but if im going to put 30k down on something to serisoully offroad in, id just build a ranger and buy a ranger to drive every day. belive me having a daily driver u off road hard in is the worst idea ever. My borother did it for years and so did I.

HAHAHAHA Toyotas (every single model) are VASTLY superior to Raptors and in general ANYTHING Ford has ever made... My 89 4Runner will still be on the road when every last Raptor has been crushed for scrap... They are GIMMICKY JUNK. I could build a Raptor KILLER out of an old Yota and 5grand. Ford is GARBAGE pure and simple.

flag StefanGlander (Sep 16, 2011 at 20:51)
notice the redbull truck is a ford. i drive a toyota too and that ford could kick the hell out of any toyota any day
  • + 1
flag taletotell (Sep 17, 2011 at 18:33)
old toyotas had cheap metal but brilliant design. Fords had the opposite going for them. For design seems to have gotten better for long life, and toyota's materials have improved. In fact the two are working together on a hybrid drivetrain now. Both companies rock. I just miss my old hilux.

When it come to off-road though remember heavy is not usually better. Look at what vehicles win the international offroad stuff in europe: Samurais beat Broncos every time.

Stefan: Have a look around at how MANY pre-runners are built off of Toyota chasis... Sorry, but there are plenty of Camburg etc. prepped New Tundy's out there that would flat SPANK that ford all day long. I tell you something else: THat Fix Or Repair Daily could NEVER follow my 4Runner on a trail here in the NW or Nor-Cal... it's a desert truck only.

TaletoTell: I fully agree. Sami's are GREAT trucks. Espescially when you swap in a VW Turbo-Diesel and Toy. Mini-truck DT. they're amazing little rigs. And I've seen them flat out embarass bigger, more expensive rigs... Hell I see it nearly EVERY time i hit the trails here in OR or WA, and half the time theyre on tires that are 35" or smaller compared to some of the buggies on 39.5-44" tires. Lightweight is king and it keeps the rigs drivetrains alive alot longer too. Nothing like a heavy rig with a big engive to scatter U-joints and blow diffs HAHAHAHA I LOVE watching some guys blow their trucks apart then just walking up things in my little 22RE truck with Dual-cases... The skinny pedal can be your worst enemy sometime Wink

flag StefanGlander (Sep 19, 2011 at 15:40)
jeeze no need to get your panties in a ruffle. im in the process of building my 98 taco into a prerunner. im just saying that truck is way nicer than anything you or i will ever own cuzz redbull has unlimited funds. if they wanted they could build a crawler that your 4runner couldnt keep up with too. they are smart enough to pick the best possible truck for a desert truck and they picked a ford.
  • + 1
flag taletotell (Sep 19, 2011 at 20:27)
@ StefanGlander: Sorry to break you heart but Red Bull probably asked for bids on an offroad machine that would look cool and ford undersold the rest. That's how capitalism works. Redbull is a beverage company so it is in the hype business, not offroading or even mtb. It just uses them as a vehicle (pun not intended) to advertise to you, the audience who they want to drink their crap. Hype sells beverage.

Sorry Stefan, didn't mean to seem so pissy (as I re-read my post I do soun d pissy aye)... It's hard, nay impossible, to convey tone/inflection through typing on the internet. So again, sorry... I fully agree that this is far nicer then anything I own or will own... Although seeing as my 4Runner is a SFA conversion and a full cage away from being as good as any full bodied crawler can be really, so while they might be able to make something AS good, it sure couldn't be done on a Ford chasis ... Oh and I'm still DYING to find a Jap-halfcut with a 5speed and a 1kz-te Turbo Diesel in it to swap in for my 22RE. Good luck with your Pre-runner build. I've been REALLY wanting to find an old 2wd 3rd Gen 4wd PU to build a pre-runner out of... I have a ton of buddies who have quads and seeing as you can spend more to build/ buy a side-by side or a quad, I think I'd rather have a Prerunner with paddles that I could swap off and drive home in aye Wink

Taleto tell: Spot on analysis aye... something I find pretty odd is all these guys sponsored by these energy drinks. They all train so hard and what not only to drink all this JUNK they get from their sponsors... I mean watching the Atherton Project I see Gee rip down like 5 Red-bulls... That is flat out HORRIBLE for you. no to mention if I drink ONE redbull I'm shaking and couldn't even begin to make a full race run down a WCDH course... Meh, maybe I'm just old and out of the loop, but I find this pretty odd. lus I'm a medic/ex-firefighter/Nursing student and I used to work in the ER where I saw MANY cases of people who came in with irregular heat rythms from drinking too many Monster, Redbulls etc... Anyone else see this as kind of a contradiction, trying to ne ultra fit and yet guzzeling garbage just cause they're sponsored by them??? hell, dump the crap out and drink Gatorade oyut of the can guys. Maybe steady hands will help you win races Wink

Just like smoking, it is a way of saying I am too cool to care about living to be old. In fact they all are afraid to get old. They should check out Tip and Johnny Smoke. They aren't old, but they aren't kids and because they are healthy they can still rip and have a blast. That's my goal. Go gracefully, having a good time all the long way to the grave.
