3 Girls, 2 Bikes, 1 Sandwich and a broken ankle

Posted: Jul 24, 2009

The World Cup events bring riders in from, well, all over the world. Today we ran into Petra Bernhard from Austria, Emmeline Ragot from France and Micayla Gatto from Canada. They are all here to pin it on the long MSA course and all want to land on top of the podium.

Check out what each of them, their bikes, sandwiches and ankles are up to inside.

Petra Bernhard is in town from Austria with her Ancillotti Tomaso DHP. We rarely see bikes like hers over here in Canada and we were excited to take some pics of it and Petra too of course.

Name: Petra Bernhard
Home Country: Austria
Traveled from: Direct flight from Munich to Montreal
Bike: Ancillotti Tomaso DHP
Course quote: "It's a long course, but it's the same course for everyone" "This is my second time here, but the last time was about 5 years ago, happy to be back" "Oh and rental cars are really expensive here!"

Emmeline Ragot is from France and has been on the WC podium a few times in the past 2 seasons. She is here with her Switzerland based team Suspension Center and sporting a broken ankle. Girls are way more hard core than the guys are when it comes to sucking up pain. We'd never met her in person and thought she'd be taller, but she's a micro bundle of energy that is rocking a broken ankle and is faster than us. Good Luck!

Name:Emmeline Ragot
Home Country: France
Traveled from: France
Bike: Turner DHR - small
Course quote: "Because of my broken ankle and all the torn ligaments, I can only clip out one way on that foot, so I just hold on in the woods and turn my mind off. And really my wrist hurts more anyhow"

Micayla Gatto is from British Columbia, Canada and was not with her bike when we ran into her, but really wanted to talk to us about her amazing sandwich that she'd got at the local IGA. So without further ado, here are the specs on Micayla's amazing sandwich.

-Poppy seed bagel
-Heinz Mustard - regular not Dijon
-Tuna (Garlic and Hot Pepper)
-Whole wheat chips for crunch
-Mozzarella cheese
-lettuce cause it's green and good for you

Let's hope that that is the fuel she needs for a podium here in Quebec.

how come pros flip their tyres the other way around? is it because more pedal grip rather than braking grip? just curious

which picture you looking at? all the tires are the right way round.

flag seraph (Jul 25, 2009 at 17:13)
Both bikes have both of their tires on the correct way.

like on the 3rd pic, its a clear shot of the front tire. the arrows go the opposite direction

no, they are the right way, the tread kinda point like they are backwards , but they are not . the treads are supposed to be ramped like that on those tires .

flag erik74 (Jul 25, 2009 at 23:07)
when the tread hits the ground, those "arrows" are pointed forward...

flag joexspocent92 (Jul 26, 2009 at 0:08)
yeah. when the tire touches the ground. that part youre correct. but that improves acceleration grip and decreases braking grip. i guess pros dont brake a lot? thats just my assumption

flag Mazekwon (Jul 26, 2009 at 9:51)
that would be correct, the best way to go faster is to not use something that slows you down, and pro's do go fast.

On the 3rd pic, the tire is on the correct way, so that the ramps are flat when the knobs hit the ground.

the maxxis logo is always drive side, which they are.

flag joexspocent92 (Jul 26, 2009 at 16:06)
oh. i dont know about you guys, but i run my tires the other way around (for braking performance) but as mazekwon said, i guess pros use their tires the other way to go faster as they pedal
  • + 2
flag seraph (Jul 26, 2009 at 17:01)
Most people use them this way because it is the recommended rotational direction.

flag erik74 (Jul 26, 2009 at 18:45)
ya, it throws mud and shit away better...id say running your tires backwards is losing more performance overall than the little gain in braking.

flag joexspocent92 (Jul 26, 2009 at 21:36)
actually, i take back EVERYTHING what i said. i feel like a complete dumbass now. hahaha. my friend said that the maxxis logo is always on the drive side just like matlem said. i just got confused cuz these tires didnt look similar. my wtb tires have 2 settings. downhill and XC cuz the scoops go opposite ways

putting high rollers comp16s and 24s on that way round makes the tyre more stable under braking. alos a little lesss rolling resistance... Wink

on pic 4 and 5

whats the use of that white piece of plastic the chain is going through??
  • + 1
flag kev-roberts (Jul 26, 2009 at 14:16)
maybe some sort of ghetto chain device like her ghetton odd crank arms
  • + 1
flag matlem (Jul 26, 2009 at 23:02)
because of the way the swingarm is set up on the ancillotti. It stopsthe chain moving around so much and causing too much chain slap.

Emmeline....you need to take it easy on that ankle sista!! As a physio (who also tends to shred on hurt body parts) it does NOT make sense to keep riding from the long-term standpoint. Your ligaments are remodeling and in the mean time have weak tissues that need "healthy" stresses (AKA physio). Quick, unprotected shots to the ankle....which I'm sure you're feeling are gonna cause long term pain and instability. Keep it iced up and Arnica ALL OVER THAT ANKLE!!! Do it right the first time and you'll hopefully have a long healthy (wo)man-whooping DH career!!! Cheers!!
