Climbing or descending. Downhill or XC. Whistler or Moab. No matter the location or terrain, Enduros just like to rip it up. They're happy climbing winding singletrack as long as it leads them to where they can fly - often literally - down a deep forest, North Shore-style trail. Five-foot drops, huge baby heads, and mossy log bridges, all satisfy their never-ending craving for All-Mountain terrain.
I like the video the riding is amazing, but it was way too much of a commercial. Also, it stuck out so bad that the thing he read at the beginning was not what he thought of or wrote
You don't want an Enduro, they pedal like crap unless the rear is essentially locked out. They are good on the descent because of the low BB and long wheelbase, but you can do that with modern suspension designs that work alot better than the outdated FSR design. A V10 pedals almost as good as an Enduro, and that's not an exaggeration. The Enduro EVO is an even worse pedaller, but the Stumpy EVO is too weak to jump. Specialilzed clearly has not come close to making a good all-around all-mountain bike, if pedalling efficiency means anything. Giant, Trek, Santa Cruz, Cannondale, all have much better suspension designs and more capable all-around bikes.
Trek used to be the most hated big brand in MTB, but Specialized has caught and surpassed them in the last couple of years.
Who is Matt Hunter and what has he ever accomplished? Answers: A pretty face and nothing. No contest results, no race results, just full page ads in magazines doing things 10,000 other riders could do. Ridiculous quote of the day: "It feels like a mountain bike should feel." He really loses all credibility when he starts hyping about the biggest P.O.S. seatpost on the market, the Command Post. If he is the one responsible for helping Specialized "innovate or die"(dumbest marketing slogan in the bike world, btw), then he really hasn't accomplished anything. Nice scenery on the mountain, but the video quality was poor or intentially messed up by Specialized to be "innovative".
douche comments and no idea what your talking about. FSR is not outdated, it just works. Up and down. Matt gets paid to be in videos and in print, not for racing. He also won the RaceFace challenge years ago against everyone on the planet. Don't be hating because your jealous and can't ride.
@Protour- you obviously do not get out and about much because every other bike i see on the trails nowadays is a specialized. Whether its an sx, demo or enduro it doesn't matter. specialized obviously makes a good bike or people wouldn't buy it. plain and simple economics bud.
on another note, i know a guy who rides for specialized and broke three 2010 enduro frames. hopefully they beefed it up a little bit
Well, I broke my 2007 enduro frame... It seems they didn't the past 3 years (although they completely changed the design). But indeed, hopefully they did now. Their support and warranty is one of the best I know.
I didn't know he won the RaceFace challenge, that does def give him some credibility. He must be one of those guys who has skills but doesn't like competitions a whole lot, thats respectful. He was shredding the berms pretty good. He's. probably a cool dude, I don't know him so I shouldn't be so judgmental about him just cause he rides for a company I don't like.
@Protour, are you f*cking kidding me right now? Your very own BC native Matt Hunter is a god among all other mountain bikers. Just because he prefers to stay humble and send it on 12 foot high 60 foot booters in silence and by himself doesnt mean he has no credibility. I guess any rider without an ego half the size of yours must suck terribly... c'mon man. give me a break. Matt Hunter (and Mike Kinrade and Garret Buehler, for that matter) are the epitome of a soul rider. They f*cking send it for the sole purpose of sending it, not so that they can brag to 14 other riders and have 2,000 onlooking 15-year-olds with massive boners watch as they compete for money.... (not saying that they aren't good riders), but Matt and all those guys out in Kamloops just shred to live through freeride. sorry not all of us want to sell out...
Yea I wouldn't be judging him at all! Hes one of the raddest people I've met and for all his credibility and how famous he is in the mountain biking world he could be the biggest douchebag but hes not. He always takes interest in what you have to say and is super humble and always stoked.
yeah, ur full of sh*t too if you think enduros cant pedal. The new 2011 rears suspension with the yoke design is a pedaling champ. If you think it doesnt pedal its probably because your mashing and have a crappy pedal stroke. I have a 2011 sx trail, thing pedals like no other, almost zero bob. It has the same rear suspension design as the enduro. and matt hunter is a rad rider. totally throws down in all the vids ive seen of him.
Protour apparently doesn't know how to ride a bike... First of all the enduros climb just as well as they go down. Second of all if you know how to ride a stumpy right you can jump pretty much anything. Before you hate on bikes learn how to ride them properly.....
Ok, I dont have any disagreements with angrynipples, he is right, I'm wrong, and I'm sorry I dissed MHunter. But I stand by mystatements about the pedaling ability of the Fsr design. Whe you stand and sprint, they aren't as responsive as other designs.
when you're standing and sprinting - you dont want it to be responsive. you want it to be as unresponsive as possible so you can ride efficiently. you only want it to be responsive when doing drops and rock gardens and just regular obstacles, not when you're going into a bmx-style sprint.
I totally agree. The guy knows the true meaning of mountain biking. Would really like to get a chance to ride with Matt someday...but then again he wouldn't be riding solo anymore. Other thing I could add to my buckt list: own a bike like that...awesome.
The problem I have with this vid is whether I should spend money on Spec Enduro or on a trip to such a place, no matter where am I on the globe, and still have some money left - even If it would mean taking a hardtail with v-brakes
I did these and 7 summits on a hard tail with v-brakes, and about 1 inch of front travel. Definitely worth the trip, but I'd recommend hiring a bike out there. You can ride anything on any bike, but suspension just makes it a bit more fun! Especially for 7 summits you can hire a semi-decent full-susp for like $50 in rossland.
such bike in average setup will cost like 3000$, for that price I can finance a trip to fly from any place on the planet to ride there for a week and I will still have some money left.
I ride a vbrake HT with 100mm fork to polish my skills for riding a bigger bike There are maybe 2 places where I get off the small bike where I would ride a big one. Sure it's more waaaay more fun on enduro bike, but most stuff is doable on a clunker and different people find different pleasure in "pinning it" or in "being in nature" or in "pure hardship".
Honestly those trails in New Denver are so smooth, so buff and the views are so insanely great that you probably could do it on a full rigid - maybe with gears though because the climbs are very long. Even if the 1200m downhill to the New Denver Lake made your rims overheat you'd still be stopping periodically to check out old mining ruins; or gawk at the Valhalla mountain ranges, or maybe try to spy peaks in Kokanee Glacier area. So you'd probably not ride the trail as fast as someone on an Enduro or $ 3k bike but you would probably have a boatload of fun.
Sorry if I sound like a shill for Kootenay riding but New Denver area is truly one of the magical areas in the world that I've experienced.
He has progressed this sport and has put his name in history as one of the greats. His video parts in movies like follow me and Roam still get me stoked to this very day. Its fair to say that everyone has an opinion of what bike they like to ride or what components they like best because its called freedom of will. If everyione liked the same product or did the same things the world would be a boring place. Great shredding matt and keep up the good work
Protour - you're missing the point a bit! Mountain Biking is about getting into the hills and enjoying yourself, not Bouncing around in the Cafe Car Park to impress the kids. Matt Hunter is a truly understated rider. When I watch a video of his, it always makes me wanna get out and ride. Surely that's the effect an MTB video should have? On a bike note, I have a 2011 Enduro Expert - it's unbelievable! I've had six holidays in the Alps and this years was the best by a mile. The bike climbs like a goat and descends faster than anything I've ever ridden. I've ridden a lot of bikes (cos I work in a bike shop - lots of test bikes). BTW - the shock is always in the open setting, never Propedal. This Bitching about MTB's is stupid. We should be leaving that up to the Road Fraternity. They're brilliant at it.
It's 160mm, that's the s-works model, stock this comes with 160mm front and rear. The Evo gets an extra 10mm on the front taking it up to 170mm but still has 160mm at the back. However Matt's bike is probably far from stock config so unless his specs are published we won't know for sure.
Jeez another advert!! Get over yourself Specialized its just a bike - You don't need this bike to go up and sign that book!! There are lots more similar bikes out there which are probably cheaper too.
For gods sake, why does PB allow this video? Are they getting paid by Spesh?
Most of the content on here contains some sort of product endorsement. Do you think this site would still be worth visiting if all content that contained advertising was removed?
@ rift - Any video will have a featured rider etc, in this case Specialized picked a great rider and a bike that works well in this terrain and put together a video that we liked. Yep you could ride your HT up there, sign the book and come back down, they just chose a different bike than you and possibly a more talented rider too. If you don't like something, no one is forcing you to watch it - it's free content to share, maybe you are not the type that likes free things or sharing?
Sorry guys, might be having a bad day.. I know this site and most run on advertising but it just annoyed me just now because this video was just pure advertisement. usually you get sponsors and such at the beginning or what ever but this vid was literally saying specialized is the best! It does EVERYTHING!
I probably am a little bit OTT. Sorry must be my time of the month. (Yes, men have it too you know)
i thought it was one of the nicest adverts i'd seen in a while. just imagine seeing this in your ad breaks instead of bloody argos or something. you'd be stoked!
Matt is super rad to ride with, and the enduros rule.....I've had a couple now. Sure the old ones were more xc and broke if you hucked them, but my new one Get's R DUN!!! I've ridden skinnies, hucked it off 6-7' drops, and hit decent jumps on it too. Not to mention DESTROYING alpine singletrack. The only time I wish I had a Stumpy EVO was on HUGE rides with a bunch of XC cardio-maniacs!!!
what the f*ck is wrong with advertising?? ! If you don't like it, don't watch it? It was fairly obviously a specalized advert from the outset, given it's from the official specialized youtube, and the name of the article, as well as the description ?
