I feel the mtn biker could have tucked into a more aerodynamic position on some of the straights that he wasn't pedaling on. Other than that I am stokd, didn't think he had the win

Wow! I did not thought they would be so close, didnt think the mountainbiker would keep up. very exciting to see! One thing i didnt like was that the mountainbiker started a little bit before the snowboarder and i think thats why he was after the mountainbiker in the beginning. I think the reason it was flat at the end was that they thought the snowboarder would have an advantage in the slope and the biker on the flat. (: Real cool, not dumb at all no-ah !

As a biker and a snowboarder I feel that this was not fair. I'm better than that snowboarder so obviously they didn't look too hard to find him and the snowboarder has no way of propelling himself forward on flat parts. Both use gravity and momentum to advance but the biker does have and advantage with his drivetrain

I snowboard and i will admit that skiing has every advantage over snowboarding. No blind spot, way faster, more control, you are able to ride way gnarlier stuff on them, you dont get stuck on flat spots, bigger tricks in free skiing. Downhill skiiers have among the biggest balls in the world. I havent seen any snowboarders race down a mountain at 150kph. Calling skiiers "wienies" shows how ignorant you are.

MTB is still my favourite by a long long distance.

Hey Sanchez, I used to snowboard but now I ski and don't look back. I find it a lot more like riding DH, as you are facing forward and is one of many reasons why I like it better. Can't say I've ever been accused of being a wienee on a bike, snowboard or skis, but if you're putting out the challenge come on up to Whistler and I'm pretty sure we'll find a good crew of people to crush you in the summer or winter, no matter what they ride.  Skiing is significantly faster than snowboarding, no question, and a skier would've easily won. In terms of what's more "hardcore", they're all action sports, and you can take them as far as you want in terms of skill and how difficult the stuff you do is.

flag scaliwag (Dec 5, 2011 at 17:26)
@samsemtex. Not every advantage. Skiing is rad and definitely faster, but IMO snowboards take the cake when it comes to shredding pow. It's no coincidence that powder skis look more and more like snowboards every year. Lack of control and getting stuck on flat spots betrays some inexperience.

You want a real joke, slap this on for size.

A man sits is a court room for murdering his wife, and his wifes lover. The judge reads "You are convicted to one life sentence for the murder of your wife with a hammer" . . . . immediately a man stands from the back of the courtroom and yells "YOU a*shole F*CKING C*NT" and sits down.

The Judge with a disgusted face then says to the man on trial, "You are also convicted of a second life sentence for killing your wifes lover, with a hammer"

Once again, the man stand up and yells "You F*ucking a*shole sh*t C*nt F*cker"

The court room in silence, the judge says "SIR, please be quiet in this court room" and the man from the back of the room says. "Every weekend for the last 6 months I have asked to borrow this pricks hammer and he told me he didn't have one"

And just for the record, the MTB guy and Snowboard guy both shredded one for all the homies

All action sports are rad- trying to say one is better than another is a waste of time because it's so subjective. We should open our eyes and realise that we should be stoked for eachother that we have all found something that brings so much to our lives.

Whilst on the topic of jokes though-

2 spastics go up to an ice-cream van and say, 'Can we have 2 ice cweams pwease?' to which the driver responds, 'Yeah of course, what flavour would you like?'

'It doesn't matter, we're gonna drop them anyway.....'

There are a lot of factors that could have pushed this one way or the other. Like the comment at the top says a snowboard isn't gonna do well on a DH course, but then again a DH bike isn't gonna fair well dropping into an AK heli line or even a course with some turns. I agree that race should have ended before it flattened out and that pedaling def helped the guy on the bike, just like poles and skating would have helped a skier. In the end though this doesn't prove bikes are faster than snowboards (or skiers) on snow. What it proves is that there are still ways this sport continues to surprise us and THAT is F'ing cool.

I think you're confusing grip with 'friction'... Mountain bikier has a lot of 'friction' so rolls slower, snowboard has very 'little friction' so slides quickly... The snow boarder does have more grip, long strip of sharp metal edge vs small patch of knobbly rubber. On foot, on ice would you have more grip with rubber sole shoes or ice skates? think about it :-)

Of course they had some jibber jabber race him on a twintip board... probably not even a sintered base. If that boarder was actually a racer instead of a park rider the board would have smoked the bike.

Snowboarding is still sicker though. Pretty unfair at the end with the flat, but close race no matter what!

flag freerideglory (Dec 5, 2011 at 14:54)
He's on a FR bike, on snow, the snowboard being designed for the snow, the FR bike being designed for dirt. The bike would have too much drag to cope with if he couldn't pedal, so the fact he had a chain, only made it a little more fair.

flag chrisrussell (Dec 5, 2011 at 19:13)
Okay well well you "surprised" simple as that. That is all I said. I wasnt surprised about it as he had a chain - In my opinion quite a simple race. The bike could have pedaled in many places but chose not to, to make the race closer at the end. Obviously with your superior knowledge of bikes VS snowboards, this was an extremely surprising outcome. How foolish of me to imagine it would be simple, I better hang my head in shame!

flag freerideglory (Dec 7, 2011 at 2:13)
Your initial comment implies that, in your opinion, it would have been a different outcome if he didn't have a chain, this is obvious, as if he had no chain, gravity alone would now be able to overcome the drag created by the tires needed just to maintain grip =)

flag taff22 (Dec 8, 2011 at 5:57)
This was my exact thought - a snowboarder relies only on gravity for propulsion. The cyclist has gravity and the additional "boosts" of pedalling. Fun race no doubt, but not a surprising outcome in the slightest, especially with the flat finish!

Also, when you consider the size of the jumps, they're designed to be hit at a certain speed - too slow and you hook up, too fast and you risk overshooting (anybody remember Gee from a few years ago?).

So the speed for the majority of the race is dictated to within a few mph by the track, but the MTB has the advantage of pedalling out of the gate, when the speed drops and again on the flat finish.

Like I say; fun, but not a surprising outcome.

I know I do agree with you, it was just the manor in which you said it to start with, I was expecting the biker to win, but he still had to work hard =)

Kind of pointless if you ask me, mtb = summer and snowboard = winter. Two entirely different seasons and different sports, still a neat idea and it was fun to watch!

flag shishka (Dec 5, 2011 at 20:43)
Thats way off, mtb is on the snow, Many people don't even understand how good a full suspension bike is in the snow, even jumping on snow. I wish more resorts would make courses like that here in the usa and allow mountain bikes on parts of the mt in winter and summer.

They already did a real speed race btw bike vs ski vs board. The ski was first, then bike then board its science not skills. I think a good skier would have won this race. Boddie Miller vs Aron Gwin at Mammouth this weekend?????
