Random Products Part One - Outdoor Demo 2011

by Tyler Maine

Walking to the demo.

Monday morning we were greeted to sunny weather as we exited the bus at Boulder City.

Intense Carbide with Cane Creek Double Barrel air shock.

Intense's all new Carbon Carbine Trail bike was looking delicious with the Cane Creek Double Barrel Air on the back of it.

Kenda Nexcavator and Excavator tires.

Mike at Pinkbike has been rocking the Kenda Excavators (right) on the front of his personal rides for the past 2 seasons, meet it's new big brother, the Nexcavator in 2.5 with Race Sticky Rubber (RSR) - approx a 42A durometer.

Kenda Nexcavator and Excavator tires.

Diamond Back Booth

Diamond Back Bikes made the pilgrimage from North West Washington to the desert for the Outdoor Demo.

Surly Mukluk Ti

Salsa's Mukluk Ti and Chromo versions were garnering a lot of attention at Dirt Demo.

Surly 3.7 tires.

Giant Booth

Giant's Danny Hart just won DH World Champs and Giant was winning Dirt Demo with the largest presence by my count.

Motorex Booth

Motorex Booth - Hydration for your bike.

Katie Holden - DH killer and resident cutie.

Camelbak Booth

Camelbak Booth - Hydration for the weary rider and a chill out zone.

Trek Carbon Session 9.9

Aaron Gwin has proven that this is a World Cup winning bike - Trek's Session 9.9 Carbon.

Trek Carbon Session 9.9

Trek Carbon Session 9.9

Trek Carbon Session 9.9

Chris King InSet 2

This headset could solve the woes of lowering your stack height on the many new taper offerings out there - Chris King's In Set 2

Chaz from Cove Bikes and the latest laser etching on titanium Hummers.

Cove Shocker

Cove's revamped Shocker was out looking for Playmates.

Commencal Meta AM

I can't help but get excited when I see this new bike from Commencal - it is on the top of my list of must try bikes for 2012 - The Meta AM.

Commencal Meta SL

Drop your travel down to 120mm, but keep the slack geometry and burliness of the AM and you've got the new Meta SL from Commencal.

Chris Tutton - Race Face's new CEO

Race Face Clothes.

Back from the dead - Race Face is here and looking good with a whole new line up of clothing and hardgoods - green is looking to be 2012's color.

Devinci Booth

Devinci unveiled their Split Pivot line up at last year's show and were on hand this year with even more models and refinements to others.

Oakley Booth

Oakley rolls into events with style and a presence - this is a bad ass set up.

Giro Feature

When Giro fazed out the Xen, they brought forth the Xar for the trail riders and racers, but didn't forget about the 160mm+ travel riders. All you Enduro and Super D racers that like to rock goggles need to look no further than the new Giro Feature.

Giro Feature

Felt Deep 6

Cruiser riders rejoice - the Felt Deep Six is OMG rad!

Agreed, Commencal frames have some sexy lines.

...I'd also love to see a write up/review on the "Cane Creek Double Barrel Air" pinkbike!

Call me a wanker but from personal experience, the first thing that comes to mind when I see a Giro helmet is tangled helmet straps...

no one has made a helmet like the Xen...perfect balance of comfort / protection / ventilation / style / durability and low profile fitment Smile

the XAR is horrible, does not fit many Xen riders including me!!

thankfully bike distributors still have stock of the old Xen, might be worth grabbing one before they are gone forever Frown

Buy a Hex, pretty much exactly the same helmet but with fewer vents and half the price.
  • + 4
flag phobospwns (Sep 13, 2011 at 14:55)
The Hex isn't the same... the harness straps come out of the helmet differently, in a manner which irritates me at least. I crashed hard with my old Xen, and tried to replace it with the Hex. I gave it away and found a new Xen in short order.

Also, that new helmet looks horrible. Are they jumping on the POC ugly bandwagon?
  • + 4
flag TheGoose (Sep 13, 2011 at 15:08)
I don't think they are jumping on the POC bandwagon, because POC stuff doesn't look nearly THAT bad.

It's the bike for privateers. Proven with results and it eats up race tracks, only begging for more.......Cove makes great bikes period. There are changes to the frame, it's a pound lighter, lower BB and some other tweaks.

flag captainspaulding (Sep 13, 2011 at 17:26)
It was completely redesigned for '11.. I give it to you it doesn't look it, but w/dialed geometry and a great rear suspension it's hard to beat.

I saw the Intense with CCDB air on Cane Creek's Facebook page a few days ago. Here in hi res, it looks good. Very good! The Meta SL from Commencal looks very nice too. I wouldn't wear a full red helmet though...
  • + 1
flag tom-cuthbert (Sep 13, 2011 at 18:34)
Only thing I don't like about the CCDB without riding it is the chunkiness of the body and reservoir, I can see that limiting the amount of frames it can go on.

I thought you were joking because I always think of bar-ends as the things you use for climbing on a xc bike (I don't even know what they call them anymore). Got a good laugh, thanks. We always used to call what you're talking about "end caps".

flag browner (Sep 13, 2011 at 16:13)
Ive heard these big ole bruisers can be pretty fun in a singletrack situation as well as the soft stuff. The tyres pull you along and soak up all the chatter - once they are finally up to speed! Also that bike has a rack mount so its pretty good if your planning on using it as a camel.

flag thrice (Sep 13, 2011 at 17:08)
I also thought they where usless until I saw an article on bike magazine of how two riders whent on an epic trip in alaska where they crossed rivers, sand, rocks, and mountains. They carried rafts, camping gear, and essentials. All while riding fat tire Surley Pugsleys. They said they needed simple and efficient bikes that wouldnt break down on them and could ride all types of terrain. And it does make sense, fixed gear rigid Pugsleys did the job.

flag brit-100 (Sep 14, 2011 at 2:11)
The also allow the bike to float, as the air volume is so high, which obviously helps with river crossings.
