PaintHouse Customs Contest - 5 Finalists!

Firstly, I'd like to thank everyone who entered the contest! After the contest ended last Monday I had received 172 entries, most containing several designs. And after much deliberation amongst my colleagues and peers I was able to narrow that 172 down to my top 5. These 5 designs have great composition, a unique perspective on the idea, and a professional quality that would match the helmet. They are also all completely original artworks.
I had each of the finalists give me the run down on their designs; picking a winner out of these won't be easy...

I had each of the finalists give me the run down on their designs; picking a winner out of these won't be easy...
Evan Pavich-
"I love to play pool next to mountain biking of course. I choose this design because it's simple, gets the point across. It doesn't make the eyes bleed, but doesn't bore you to death either. I didn't want to do a design that someone has done before on the back of the helmet, something that would be original and stand out. People would easily notice someone with pool balls on the back, ...especially on a custom POC helmet ha ah ah, Jokes."
Paul Saunders-
"The design has a little bit of graffiti influence, with a heavy 3D to make it pop off the helmet. The star represents the inner rock-star we all feel when we send it down the mountain."
Jeff Jackson-
"I created this design based off a photo my friend took of me up at Beacon Hill in Spokane WA. It was one of those right-place-right-time photos that couldn't be beat. I wanted the design to be really simple but still be memorable. I also wanted the biker to look like he was jumping in front of my name."
Jack Willis-
"I have had the font as an idea in my head for a long time now and I used to spend time designing a full alphabet back in boring school lessons. When I found out about the helmet competition I immediately thought that this would provide a striking design. The idea behind it is that each letter is constructed from lines within a perfect square. My name also happened to fit well with the letters as some would leave spaces that wouldn't fit. I had to switch one of the L's to solve this problem but I think this also adds a uniqueness to the design. I made the design in paint as its all I had to use but having the restrictions on the illustration also meant the design was kept simple. I tried several color combinations before deciding upon the one I submitted and I chose this because of the symmetry of the colors. I also used the primary colors and green because of the contrast between them and because on the back of a such a stunning helmet you really want the design to stand out."
Lucas Bell-
"There were quite a few ways I could fill out a two inch by four-inch box! I decided to go with a "puzzle style" lettering with all of the letters fitting together like pieces. Being on a bike helmet, I wanted the letters to suggest movement so I included an arc as the base with the letters following the bend. In order for the eye to see the whole design together, rather than having a main attraction, I made sure that the angles were mirrored on both ends and the letters did not greatly vary in thickness. The color scheme was influenced by the small logo at the base of the helmet with red letters and white outline."
Be sure to check back here on Pinkbike.com this Friday to see the winning entry and completed helmet! Second place will be receiving a pair of custom, PaintHouse branded, Straitline bar end caps.
To show our appreciation, everyone who entered the contest will be receiving a coupon for 10% off their next helmet from PaintHouse Customs!
Good luck to all the finalists!- Stacy Glaser

ohh I was better than all of them!!! unfair xD
all the names are crap. Looks like a total of 5 min for about 4 of them. I hate you Paint House. Thanks for not taking mine into consideration. Next time ill let my 1 year old nephew draw me out something.. what a lame contest.
Wow, sounds like a lot of unhappy people. Can't you just be stoked for the folks that are in the top 5?
No because I bet 3 out of 5 cant ware the helmet. So it will be sitting around. The helmet better be used and not shelved as art.
actually its the size of a medium giro remedy basically , so i bet 4 of 5 will wear it. hopefully no one will sell it cause thats pretty lame
yeah you are right. People! just stop writing stupid things about this contest. It was a different contest with a unique prize.I think every contest here on the pinkbike is the best thing you can get on the net. So stop posting sh*t about it.
here is my entry, i deserved to get beat

One final comment on the dispute who the hell chooses a drawing that uses microsoft paint has a terrible design and bad colors to put on plaid
between all them "jeff" and "pool balls" are the best...the others i cant even read....thats just great

Seems like a weird concept. 'Hey guys we are going to custom paint this helmet cause we are bored. Wait, lets make this a contest. You get a custom painted. But you have to keep the design this small, and simple. Then we are going to paint your design onto our helmet with complete disregard to the current paint scheme.'
Jeff, has the best design of the ones picked, as it is the only thing close to matching the color scheme. Maybe change the Jeff to a matching yellow.
This company seems a bit fly by night.

Just want to say, that there are seriously sick helmets on the Paint house customs website. But this helmet just seems weird.
Sick website.. Ill idea for contest.
Only things that get me:
1. Odd paint scheme to have just any random design placed on the back of (being plaid with something colorful slapped on the back).
2. Id love to meet the judging panel, not even being sour because i know mine was only mediocre but some of these are really just crap, especially coming from a place that's supposed to be all about custom paint jobs.
Even when there's "over 150" you'd think to see some really phenomenal work.

not that im disagreeing with you but the original contest rules said it needed to be simple. so i wouldnt be surprised if some really insane drawings were submitted but its the fact that its going to be painted.. stacey has to choose something a little less.. difficult...
Simple=great and great= simple, this is the main thing in this contest. I wish I was an american to say what Iam thinking about of the most of your stupid comments here. Wnners were choosen, so tell him congratz.
Dont get me wrong, I love the last design, and the first ones good too. But one wasnt even colored, one definitly will NOT work on plaid and the other is pretty decent. Simple is good, but incomplete work and work that will look awful on the back of the prize itself? thats just messed.

Numbers 1 and 5 definitely leave something to be desired (complete lack of perspective, shadows going different directions...come on).
The other 3 are quite original. Although I believe a little more time could have been spent cleaning them up.
Next contest requires some hardcore rule adjustments. Freehand vs. Digital, Age Categories, etc...
I too would like to see all of the designs entered.

thats not constructive, u dont even know what ur talking about.... 5 has no shadows or perspective. and i see no shadows going in different directions on the first one either so stfu
I'll say that all of the them could be done in less than 3 hours, 4th one was posted at the same day this contest started! I don't like helmet graphics too, Painthouse can do a lot of awesome stuff but this pattern is awful
Yes, I do know what I am talking about. Look at your design, each ball is casting a shadow on the one next to it. The sun will only hit an object from one side when providing a shadow. You cannot have a shadow going in every direction. Art 101. (unless you are providing multiple lighting angles)
If you cannot learn from your mistakes you will never get any better.
Now please quit your whimpering and rejoice in the fact that you are a finalist.

well.. I will make no comments about the top 5 winners , and here is my option for everyone can see ... http://brajal.pinkbike.com/album/PaintHouse-Customs/
I think some of you are a little harsh on the contest. It is generous to say the least for a helmet painter to donate his time to paint a helmet, and even more generous to paint a name on the back.
As for a "strange" contest, everyone knew the design before they entered, so while some pieces are better than others, all entrants were aware of what the helmet specs and designs would be.
"Rule" adjustments...one winner one category...seeing as they are handrawn and digital in the final five, it wasn't necessary to go either way.
Congrats to the five that were chosen for the final.

My recommendations for separate categories are only to level the playing field for future contests.
Yes, it was generous for Stacey to donate his time for this contest. However, look at all of the free advertising he is getting for this project. Fair trade in my book.
Cheers.

I must admit that the first one is cool, but the other 4 ones???? wtf??? i cant even read the names that there are designed, exept the one from jeff, but this one is too simple and the bike in front off the name shouldn't make part of the grafic because i thought that the costest was to design your name grafic not about the drawings around it.
Conclusion:the first one deserves it but the others... lool
anyways i must thank painthouse for making this kind of contest, i think that for example bicicle manufacturers should do something like this to design the bike grafic's.

The lucas one looks good but i'm a bit bummed on the quality of 5 picked.
I saw one by brajal that was really cool and I think it fit really well with the helmet.
here is mine if you're curious to see it. kind of plain but I thought it was a unique idea.

thanks daugherd, yes, you had a nice idea, but hard to decode probably but it's definitely different ... the problem here was doing something original and that had anything to do with the defined paint job...
If any one want to see all the 12 entries i had send for the contest for curiosity take a look:http://animalbiker.pinkbike.com/album/PaintHouse-Customs-entries/
coment what do you think.

the comments about this contest and the sour grapes being shown to paint house- who is a relatively young, excellent artist- are making me sick.
you bitter little snottagroms make this site look bad. i would never offer my services to pinkbike- besides the shirt i have already designed for them- in this manner, precisely because of your shit attitudes. painthouse is obviously a much more patient person then i am.

OK, but I would say that the finalists make it look bad too
Would you like any of those as your desktop background?

You guys haven't even given Stacey a change to paint the design that will be the winner, and you are already judging. I am sure like any painter he will clean things up, and make it work with the helmet. I have had projects start from a bar napkin with stickmen, that have turned out great.
You should be thankful to have the opportunity to enter a contest such as this...effort and time has been put into that helmet...with more to come.
If you didn't win, so be it, ride have fun.

I really like the cue ball one, And they are all great designs, i entered but even I knew that my design was probably too complex, you all have to realise 2 inches by 4 inches isnt a large space. They are all good designs and any would look good. My pick is MR.cueball
Cept jeffs wasnt a self created font, and it was supposed to be a simple design with few details and hes got a friggen bike.
For anyone interested, here are my submissions for the contest.

Actually, the rule only stated that no stock font would win...not that you couldn't use one.
My vote would be for Jack Willis. Cheers

I agree with you.
And yeah but whats the point in being in the top 5 if you cant even win, thats like being in the top 5 of a race if your disqualified.
Should give people who read the rules a shot.

Great contest. The Lucas design is pretty sick...he gets my vote hands down. Here's the link to my entries, they were solid...but hey not everyone can win---http://clynch.pinkbike.com/album/PH-helmet-concepts/ Good luck to the top 5!
I personally think the plaid looks sick, I would rock that thing any day. Too bad what started as an e-mail to ask if they could go with a smaller helmet turned into a drunken rant about it being a large, my bad... After being a dick I didn't think it would be appropriate to enter in the contest. With that, less hate and spread the stoke. Props to these guys for getting to the final 5.
