Soooooo much stuff is changing for 2012!! this is going to be hard getting used to all these team changes and sponsor changes that have happened wonder what is next? at this point Im pretty sure Yamaha could come out with a DH bike and it wouldn't suprise most of us at this point haha

Curious how many teams are now riding with Fox/Shimano. I wonder if these decisions are made by the teams or by the sponsors. Maybe more and more pro riders are preferring and requesting Fox? Maybe Sram can't afford to be sponsoring so many teams? I'm a diehard X0 fan but my personal unreliability issues with RockShox over the years have lead me towards Fox suspension. I wonder if we will see more Fox/Sram sponsorships?

I've always thought sram components were better than shimano and fox suspension is better than rockshox, so no racer can get the best of both worlds! I'm guessing shimano and fox are picking them up next? I like the idea of a shiny kashima 40 on a carbon v-10...

They might not go to Fox, my money says they do but what about BOS? They dont have much representation on the WC circuit, but i think Shimano drivetrain and brakes is almost definate, considering that SRAM and Shimano are the only big players in drivetrain. Could be possible for another brake manufacturer to pick them up like Hope or Formula, but i doubt it, because i bet shimano would pay alot more for them to ride their drivetrain and brakes, than they would get from running someone elses brakes.

@mellonhead1145, i know this, but you can get partial sponsorships, and truvativ and avid are just parts of sram. eg: minaar ran crank bros pedals, wtb saddles, king hubs and headsets and enve rims. plenty of overlap btwn these companies yet they pick and chose what sponsorships they wanted. i feel like syndicate is 'small' enough to be able to pick and choose, but not as large as other company's teams such as trek which get convenient and large scale sponsorships or tiny, less sought out, teams which need to root out sponsorships and dont get many at that. just my thought on the matter though, makes sense but dont take my word for it

you cant be very old then, it wasnt so long back that he was on hope, shimano, and mrp admitidly with boxxers but with a fox in the rear, when he was royal racing on the orange. it does pose a question though, cos lets not forget its not just suspension, brakes and shifters, its bars stems and posts, which in our funtime world wont make any difference but to the pros its a lot.

Sram makes great components, Rock Shox in this last years is not at the same level of the past, Avid makes shitty brakes...

The best equipment for a racer? Sram derailleurs, Marzocchi Fork, CCDB ammo, Formula Brakes... IMHO

Marzo's are heavy, but they are the smoothest forks (small bump sensitive). I just wouldn't say they are the best forks to be equiped by a racer. personal preference.

Love my XO shifters.. and my Fox Suspension.. I'm curious if SRAM wanted them on RockShox, but they wanted to move to fox? Probably a tough thing to negotiate.. well, coming from the complete package sponsorship.. I guess it would be like telling your girlfreind you're breaking up with her on weekends, but not during the week.. she would not be all that stoked with you when monday came around.. best to just make the break..

Shimano wants some more big guns to launch the new Saint line (and ze' other new line). Trek World Racing, Atherton-GT, and now Syndicate....oh and Scott 11 too...and MS Mondraker....and Lapierre. SRAM still has Specialized and Giant.

This is what i think of SRAM, amazing XO and avid codes are a gift from the gods! Truvativ is just... crap, vivid was a rock compared to my RC4, and my boxxer is the best feeling fork, but unfortunately a piece of paper has more strength than those lowers (I crack 3 last season!)

There is only one other component company out there in the big leagues and i am sad to see these guys go to the "dark side" sorry shimano/fox fans... I use some of it as well, but would pick SRAM first. While I am no team manager or WCDH racer I am just a joe kid on a stingray, but I have been in the industry as a high end wrench and neutral race support for 15 years.... SRAM did it right, customer service, innovations, weight trimming, just really great people all in all ! Sad day !

Usually, when we see such big moves in the powersports industry, it means that manufacturers are pulling out sponsorship money. In ATV and motocross, big factory teams becoming a thing of the past as more and more manufacturers prefer to supply products and less money to satellite teams. Could this be a sign of hard times to come for MTB sponsorship?

WAKIdesigns, the best joke ever! I know youo're still Shimano fun. By the way, I was really surprised to see so many Shimano haters here! From mechanical point of view, Shimano has more durable cage/pivot design (material wise as well). Sram too loud during shifting comparing to Shimano Shadow or Saint group. Tried Sram and Shimano, not really impressed with Sram. Also tried Marzochi 888 and Rock Shocks Boxxer(have them currently), should admit Marzocchi feels much plusher. Regarding Santa Cruz team, for such pro riders, I do not think switching from Sram to other brand will change much their riding. I still believe they would be fast even on bikes from Walmart

For me Santa Cruz Syndicate running SRAM components is like Scuderia Ferrari F1 bolid in red color. I don't claim it's the only right setup, but for many, many years I have always been associating SC with SRAM. Anyways, nothing is certain in this world. As usual it's all about money.

I am a Rock Shox and Avid fanatic, but don't like Sram or Truvativ components. With Sram, it's nothing terrible, just that I don't find it as Aesthetically pleasing, and with Truvativ I have had and seen my friends have SOOOO many crankset failures, received improper BB for the given crankset sooo many driveside bearing blowouts, and these are DH parts on XC/AM trails. Contacting their Customer service is crap and they always spit out improper usage... will not warranty.. sucks butt when you spend the extra bucks on something you should blast off cliffs, but cant handle a 5 foot drop.

In retrospect, I had one crank by truvativ that I got by chance. It was a prototype and "not for use"... It held up to everything and begged for more... It was a holzefeller on a team howitzer bb... 2 ring,. 24-36 and I fashioned it w/my old 40 tooth raceface bash... sexy times!! Smile

Def sad day but as Peaty says change is the only other thing ya can be sure will happen. Though I still don't like the change myself, but it is what it is, it would be great to know if this was Sram driven, SantaCruz or more $$ offered by Fox Shimano, end of the day we do have a say. We buy these products and whether we admit it or not these riders and teams do influence us.
Saying that I've been running new gen Saint this past 8months and while it started out well and I like some of the benefits, it just reminded me why I have a love hate affair with Shimano the top jockey wheel is too far away from a close ratio cassette to be real effective and will be going back to Sram, I've never had a DH mechanical on Sram and over the last few months nothing but issues on Shimano. currently running an Ultegra road RD, I would go 10spd XO DH, but I know Sram have been working on a proper DH close range cassette and RD so wait to see if this happens soon, 10spd so OTT on a DH bike. the Ultegra also blows away the Saint for performance and speed and crispness of shifting still using Saint shifter though, I know its not new idea but its night and day.
Fox will be cool to see on the V10c the 2012 Kashima is hot, but once a Boxxer is setup right dam its hard to beat, did the shim stack recently and blown away by the forks control, everything still stock except the oil seals removed and use fox 36 foam rings to keep oil from leaking, so smooth in initial stroke, just kills the factory setting.

Good luck to em, both Peaty and Minnar still some of my fav riders even on Fox and Shimano, word is full Shimano too heard this before Xmas, bet they don't run stock Saint either, mix of XTR and Saint like Sram do with X0 I bet, no way would they stay with Saint drive train as stock its so bad, especially once its gets on the Dirt, mind you a mechanic to sort it after every run does help..

I always find it funny how you get all these kids who comment on sponsor change news that don't know the athlete or the companies, nor do they understand the dynamics and business of sponsorship. Or they say that athlete x IS brand x...oh how you have no idea how much you have bought into brand loyalty.

That being said, is there any other athlete sponsor relationship that has been as long as Pete with Rockshox?

Not really sure what your point is other than that you find something unfunny, funny, and that you don't know what brand loyalty is. Firstly, brand loyalty is personally preferring a certain brand over others for no other reason other than branding. Understandable, since if buying a certain brand has always worked for you, you find them reliable and dependable. For instance I know people who will always buy yamaha bikes, and I myself will probably only ever buy Libtech snowboards.

There are many people synonymous with many brands, and it is weird when you see those people looking different and using different equipment that what you're used to, especially after over a decade. Sorry but I do know the athlete and the companies, and I realise the variable nature of sponsorship deals and consumer trends, and seeing them using non-sram stuff will be strange to me. Not bad, but it will be strange to get used to.

The number of people who purchase aftermarket products for DH applications is quite small compared to the number of XC/trail/road users purchasing components. SRAM has the XC/trail market locked up with numerous technical advancements in material use compared to Shimano. XO is more versatile, and XX is just plain better. The performance difference is in reality minimal though. For example, who would pay $500.00 for an aftermarket XTR crank, when you can buy carbon XO for $50.00 less money, with many more chainring and BB options? If you want more exotic, Race face Next of Sixc isn't much more money, and FSA has some nice carbon options as well. Racers don't use components because they like them, they use them because they are paid to. When is the last time a race was lost because of a non crash related mechanical failure from a derailer or crank? It doesn't matter which brand you run.

I think that if the point of the discussion is to understand WHY that happen, it is necessary to include all the other implication, like what kind of commercial deals Santa Cruz are getting or NOT with this mentioned big players.
Second, even if SRAM dumped them, I do not see any other marketing activity (including having a winning horse in the gravity circus) from SRAM coming . That being said, I presume some other changes will come (like GHerbold moving to Troy Lee - Joke) at SRAM, since looks like they are rethinking they Marketing budget.
On the other side , Shimano is pushing to get the image of premium producer (without BlackBox) but with IceTech and XTR 4 the people = XT - price placement technic , what at the OEM business is quite important to win a traditional share of market that as major for SRAM.

Well, thats a stupid decision. Sram and the blackbox labs are making the best dh racing product on the market, and I think its a big lost for them.

^^^ I used to feel the same way. Now that Shimano's dialed in their shifters and derailleurs to my liking, I can finally run more than just their cranks and brakes... I'm back on Shimano.

Smart money would be that the Syndicate go to Fox/Shimano... Word is that Bryceland had Fox Racing Shox as a listed as a sponsor for a short period of time the other day before it was taken down.

I think they will with Fox for suspensions: Marzo is not really in a good finiancial shape these days. BOS is quite a small company and Manitou doesn't have enough to support a team like syndicate I think.

Sorry I don't live in cali where the sun shines all summer and winter, over here its minus 30 with 2 feet of snow, and yes I did try biking and almost broke myself, also salt destroys magnesium so never ride you bike in the winter.

There's nothing hard in washing fork lowers after the ride so I don't think that it's such a problem. But I never heard before about problems with salt and snow. Anyone here who broked their magnesium gears because riding during the winter?
