Acros Components - Sea Otter 2010

Acros has been on the scene for 10 years now and has recently been on our radar a lot for their high end mountain bike components. This German brand is pushing quality parts and we're into them. At the Otter we were able to take a few minutes and talk with them about some of their finer mountain bike products.

A Flats:

This pedal has a huge surface area (103mm x 95.6mm), yet is very thin in profile (20mm thick). The one bearing and one bushing combo, along with the tension screw assure that the longevity of this pedal is of true concern when it was manufactured. At 466 grams per set they may not be the lightest, but they will likely outlast most of the competition for smoothness and durability. They come in either White or Black.

Component Collections - Pimptastic Groups:

Rock and Roll for Ever
Rock and Roll for Ever

Acros has put together complete collections in which you can pick your parts (Headset, hubs, B.B. and Seat Post) to either color coordinate your bike or simply have a few flashy parts to show off to your friends. The collections are available in Black Metal, Eau Rouge, White Line, Rock n' Roll / Deeep Purple (Pictured), LadyKiller, Chrome and Clockworx Orange.

Signature head sets:

Acros has access to some of the world's best bearings and you'll find them inside all their components. Their headsets do not use the typical wedge system on top of the bearings either and oddly enough, you never hear about an Acros headset needing to be adjusted or tightened up after its been installed. They have a solid line up of pros representing their line up too with the likes of Thomas Vanderham, Richey Schley, Cedric Gracia, Randy Spangler and Jeff Lenosky all having signature model headsets.

In North America Acros Components can be found through BTI Distribution.

because there is not so much rocket science in two bearings, two cups, a retention cone and 2 seals, that you need to pay over 200 bucks for it! Off course there some companies that still struggle with it (like VP 1.5) but well there are people in this world that have problems with opening a banana... and somehow you can recognize those people, before they take the bloody fruit in their hand...

"there is not so much rocket science in two bearings, two cups, a retention cone and 2 seals" TOO TRUE! this is why Chris king = rip off, as are most bike components.

flag WAKIdesigns (May 2, 2010 at 12:55)
in a way CK is pretty much a life time warranty for the headset. You buy one it will be there with you for all your life. I think they never had a return. So it might be worth paying this extra. At the same time I believe some other product like Cane Creek might be nearly as good, costing less.

""there is not so much rocket science in two bearings, two cups, a retention cone and 2 seals" TOO TRUE! this is why Chris king = rip off, as are most bike components." Remember the manufacture probably charges 100% mark u to the distributor (double the cost, the distributor then charges 100% markup on what they paid to the shop who will charge up to 250% on what they paid meaning if a product took $25o to produce the manufacturers will charge the distributors $500 who will charge the shops $1000 who will charge the customer any where from %2000 to $3500. YET at each stage only 1 to 5% of the profit is actually profit after you factor in the cost of workers, heating, and time it spent in storage.. BUSSINESS IS A BIZNATCH.

The whole premise of your "calculation" is flawed.

It is very easy to bitch on delivery chain, but actualy the one that earns most money is the last link of it, your LSB or E-shop.

At the end of the day every person working there goes home to their families (or just home) and wants to have money to buy food, pay bills, pay their children's school and go on holiday at least once a year. Plus in the end every single one of them participates in bringing the stuff to your door or LSB. Do you expect them to be volounteers? Who pays then the costs of having a venue, storage space?

You want no one in between, go ring Chris King and fix the shipping yourself. Do you think he will sell you 1 headset slightly over production costs. While being in his shoes, will you give a random guy the same price as to CRC ordering 1000?

Try that with Shimano XT shifter too, try first to find the number to the factory but first learn yourself chinese to talk to them Smile Then find yourself someone there who will pick it up from product line, and bring it to the main door. Then consider shipping cost of 1 piece comparing to order for shipping 10 000 on a 700ft long cargo ship taking millions of tons of other stuff. You want to rent a Cessna with a pilot to fly over Pacific to take it for you?

Have we talked at least a bit about taxes and accounting?

This is called Economy Smile

NOTHING IN THIS WORLD IS FOR FREE, SOMEONE ALWAYS PAYS THE BILL...
