On the road to Atomlab's Supersession 3! - Day #5-8: Supersession 3 @ Woodward West
December 10, 2007Published by bruleThe main stop of this trip is Supersessions 3 presented by Atomlab at Woodward West in Tehachapi, CA. Although this is California we are stopping in, it is probably colder than Vancouver Canada the majority of the time we are there. As you drive up, you're going through a residential area and then all of a sudden you hit two big parking lots on your left side and a bunch of big buildings/hangers with HUGE “WOODWARD WEST” billboards painted on them. This is Disneyland to way more people than just us mountain bikers; BMXers, skateboarders, fruit-booters, gymnasts (the little girls that bounce on the trampolines in the Olympics), and whatever other sports you can think of that would use this place. None the less there are 3 major categories at Woodward that we are going to cover: Business, Injuries, and Parties… everything you need to know will be covered in one of these 3 categories.
Injuries: I have never been to an extreme sports event in my life where no one has even mildly gotten injured. Woodward West was no exception with 6 airlifts directly from location this past summer and 76 documented hospital visits from camp members! This year at Supersession 3 there were a few: -Nick Meyer: Major internal mess up this weekend. Nick had a very small fall onto his handle bar with his stomach and unfortunately it lacerated his abdominal wall(the bag that holds all your intestines and stuff in before your skin) and then had his large intestine leek out in between his skin and abdominal wall and then was punctured, and then his colon was lacerated as well. There was a 4.5 hour surgery to fix all of this and Nick currently is laying down for his full recovery. There are currently 34 staples in his stomach waiting to be removed. -Ryan Meyer/Steve Bafus: While hitting the big set of dirt jumps, the medium set crosses with the first big set hip… Ryan attempted an over under with Steve Bafus and it ended with tire marks on Steve's helmet and major road rash and tweaked back for Ryan. -Peanut: While killing it on his BMX, he switched up to the MTB for a while and ended up coming about 3 inches short on one of the biggest jumps in the dirt park, snapping his fork and clappin' his dome hard enough to not know that he was at Woodward. -Joe Perrizo: Joe snapped two forks on some major corked 3's and flips and luckily was not seriously injured. -Cru Jones: Pulled a squirly move attempting to get into the big line and landed on his face. -JD Swanguen: Ate $hit on the dual course and got laughed at while he laid there in shame. Business: This is about the work: the riding, the shooting, the filming, the organizing… everything that gets done in the sport at the event. This year Mike Flaherty from Atomlab had the organizing down to a tee so all we had to do was sign our lives away on the waiver form and then do as we pleased. Major shout outs go to Taylor Sage, Kyle Strait and Scott Heart for building the dual course on the hillside that made for a bangin' change up to the skate park riding. The most color co-ordinated and steezy gear/bike award goes to JD Swanguen. The most flow(old term for steez) goes to Ryan Howard. Most inverted dumped 3's(which are now called spinners by Joe) goes to Joe Perizzo. Tyler McCaul earns the name “McCaul” over brother Cam for the 2008 season for slaying everything smooth as butter. Parties: There is much more to Woodward than hundreds of square feet of skate parks, dirt jumps, free-ride parks, and race courses. Woodward is also a major gymnastics facility so there is a big gym with trampolines and bars and ropes and all those things they use to do those things. Unfortunately we were not allowed to go in there so you just need to imagine that location. First party of the weekend was the Pizza parlor and bowling… yes there is a bowling lane. This is when the intense competition comes out as Canada vs. USA is set on the table. Mike Reid dominated for Canada in air hockey and well… Canada was out numbered in bowling so we didn't do so good. Party number 2 was at the taco place in town held by BlkMrkt. We got some good food and went back to Woodward for the Match 9 premier at the movie theater (yes there is one of those too). The night ended with a long session in the hanger and some hair trimming to. Check out Mike Reid's whole album! |

ignorance and arrogance go hand in hand
that spinner was SICK!!!!
lol. you asked for that dude.
ok what kind of bike does joe perizo ride?
Just so you know, the only reason someone would be offended by being called a Yankee is if they are a hardcore Red Sox fan. Do Canadians get offened by being called Canucks or would you have to be a Leafs fan?
would you prefer to be callad a f*cking a*shole??? Hahaha just messin with ya
how can you call gymnasts little girls have you seen what they do!!! if it was not for them you wouldent be flipping and spinning like you do so show some respect for other sports.
