Commencal Furious, meet Colton King
May 1, 2008Published by bruleThe Commencal Furious is Cedric Gracia's answer to a slopestyle, 4X and all around pinning machine. Its development has taken place over the past few years and is now in full production and ready for all of us in the general public to get our greasy paws on it. We here at Pinkbike.com wanted to see just what a bike that was put together by the “Entertainer” himself was able to dish out and take, so we dug deep into our bike testers and pulled out Colton King. Colton may be the youngest rider we have on the squad, but his experience list (or should I say injury list) reads like a long time veteran's would.
Read on to learn more about the Furious and Colton as they get introduced to each other. Furious Specs: Age-Brought into prototype approx. 2 years ago under the close supervision of Cedric Gracia. 2008 is the first year of its production. Weight-Approx. 39lbs Frame-Hydroformed Aluminum tubes, Maxxis Rubber and Shift cables. Claim to fame-Cedric Gracia aided in its development.
Colton King Specs: Age-16 Race Category-U17 Expert Frame-Fresh and Bones and one mad Afro! List of Accomplishments/Injuries: Broken Left Leg (x2), Broken Right Leg (x2), 4 bones in right foot, Broke both wrists(only one time), Broken Left Arm (x2), 3 Concussions (only DH in a Moto Lid now), Broke left and right collar bones (once each), Punctured Lung, Bruised Spleen, Bruised Ribs, Broke Left Hand once and Clavical once. Hmm ya that's all I can remember, but I'm sure that's everything. Colton will be piloting the Commencal Furious at various mountains around BC, looking to see what it's capable of. Expect to hear how it handles 4X/Dual courses, DH courses and the local DJs all the while hitting up shuttle runs whenever possible. Here is Colton's impression after a few good rips: The other day looked like a nice day to go riding. So I got driven up to Hidden Pleasures on Vedder mountain to test out the Commencal Furious. This bike is so sick. The Marzocchi 66 fork and the ROCO shock work so nicely together-it's insane! Every little bump, root and landing was nicely absorbed. I've had some sweet rides on the beautiful new bike and it's feeling super sturdy. I'd also like to thank Pinkbike for hooking it up for this year's race season as a good bike makes a difference and I want to hit some podiums this year! -Colton King www.commencal.com to learn more about the Furious and Commencal's whole line up. |

Nice bike
Only thing questionable for the specs is the single tracks. But I guess when you are sponsored and can get a new set at any time, they are a nice little lite wheelset...
^tremblay-Single track rims are one of my top choices based on bang for your buck. At about $30 Retail here in Canada the rims are strong and seem to last a lot longer than you'd expect from a rim of that price. Colton wishes he got wheels for free.
"We're still not sure what it does but it looks neat"
if it has 180mm 66s on the front im pretty shure its freeride downhill
dont you think? lol
f*cking lush bike tho, dont like the rims (personal opinion tho)

i think they were talking about the hole in the top tube.....
it's there to stop the shock reservoir hitting the tube when the suspension compresses...

I love when people comment without thinking
are you sure its not for a lockout on some shocks..?? just a thought..
yeah its so the shock dosent hit the frame, but sureley the hole in the frame must make it so weeak.
wouldnt it make it stronger coz there is more metal there? owell does look cool so wahey
Don't the yeti 303's also come with a hole in the top tube.
For those long lonely nites....LOL
its for superman frame grabs, lol
Yeah the yeti 303 has something similar. Word on the street is they added it for easier access for shox removal and adjustment. How much rear travel does this rig have? It looks big for 4x.
Take that back the yeti 303 design was for easier access to the "cars" on their rail system. My bad.
I wouldnt mind having one of these!
yeah same here, I was want to change the single tracks for some Mavics and the hub for a hope pro II though.
i love that bike !!!!!!!!!!
Yes , Looks like an nice bike to ride
IDK bout you guys but i f*cking want one ......but there sooo expensive!
ha ha, not so much in Europe... where the company is based - there £1500gbp price tag in the uk is about standard for a 7"(apprx) full sus frame - I'm sure there's better for less though!
over here in new zealand youd pay bout $5000. ouch. nice bike tho.
thats a true do anything bike in my book i want one sooo bad
Do anything? It is being tagged as a SS bike I thought, but the stock is 39 pounds. 39 pounds! And for 39 pounds you have brakes that won't stop you (juicy 3's) and cranks that will break on a bigger hit. So, throw on an extra 2 pounds for codes and another pound or two for saint cranks and you're looking at a very very heavy slopestyle bike. I love commencal stuff, but if they want to call this slopestyle they've missed the mark at least as far as marketing goes. Or maybe the article which called it "Cedric Gracia's answer to a slopestyle, 4X and all around pinning machine" was just too general. At a time when Boyko (who actually won the main SS contest) is making a 5inch travel SS bike to reduce weight and increase handling, commencal seems to have made a DH weight bike and called is SS. Personally I think freeride kicks the crap out of SS and all that. It definitely is a dope bike that'll rock anything BC has to offer, but a SS bike it is not.
if you were looking at the build closely you could easily shave a few pounds, just by pullin off the fork and rims and choosing something a bit lighter. Also i dont think that the 40 gram difference in the codes and juicy 3 would even be noticeable. If you were really worried about weight and stopping power then you would get juicy ultimate's. If guy's on the world cup goin as fast as anybody on a bike can use them, so can u. But i do agree with you that it is not a slopestyle bike as much as a laid back shorter travel bike. Seems to me it is a bit similar to the bottle rocket in premise, a single pivot with axle path modifying linkage that takes a big fork and jumps well. It should be a fun bike, just like the bottle rocket.
i have this bike, sure 39 lbs is alot but wen your going down a hill, going off a jump or do anything els with it,you dont notice that its 39lbs.Also the juicy 3 are f*cken awesome,i have straitline leavers on it and i have to say,it stops better then my 07 juicy 7!!
Definitely agree, ruktion cranks is a bad idea. Hussefelts are a minimum for a bike of this stature. Holzfellers-even better. Both are lighter and neither would really affect the price that much if at all.
the weight out of the box for 2008 is pretty good really considering the competition, a 7 inch slopestyle/freeride bike is what this is designed for.
for 2009 the pricing drops and there are 2 models, which make it super affordable now that they have some good production numbers running.
this frame with its hydroformed/monocoque and split top tube it truly unique with nothing else like it in the industry and ofcourse also costs a couple bucks more (especially in its first year of production)
best part is that split top tube allows for a super low standover, allowing 3's, whips and indian airs a breeze!
sit over one of these and feel the geometry, it feels like a dirt jumper!

39 pounds? kind of heavy don't you think seeing as its not a downhill bike or anything. theres people on here with downhill bikes 35.5 pounds *caugh wilson4 caugh**.
!!DIET!!
rockshox totem fork
truvativ stylo cranks
avid juicy 7 or code
ti spring (the marz steel ones weigh more then everyone elses)
road cassette 11-21
few other things like bar, stem, pedals are always good but the things i listed drop the weight and are 100%preformace.
i give the bike 8.5/10 as it sits

nothing special, what hapened with the tradicinal system of Comencal?, this new system is copy of other bikes like Azonic, i think its a extrage mix Canonndale- Azonic
this is not a copy of anything, take a close look at the linkage, it is the same contact suspension system that Commencal designed with BOS 4 yrs ago and uses on all their bikes, a single pivot with rod and rocker linkage
lucky guy!!! .... enjoy it!!!
sweet! i have one too! they ride so nice!
It looks like its a fun bike. Seems just a little overweight for racing if its at 39 lbs and part spec could be a little better I imagine Cedrics furious has quite a different build. Still looks like fun!
single tracks, juicy 3's, rcv? i think they could of doen better than that.
wheres the codes and totem at?? single tracks are good rims, i dont care what you say.
ths is a really great bike, the only problem is, its super exspencive. its like 2100$ just to buy the frame.
Clavical is your collar bone
"Clavical is your collar bone "
clavical connects collar bones.
i-ride-norco-99 must be a f*g because this bike is sweet. norco can suck a fat dick.. f*cking homo.

bike looks nice you look like a good rider
Good looking bike. Looks like it could take a beating and keep on keepin on. The bike is NOT billed as a SS bike on the Commencal website as some have previously stated. For folks who can only afford one bike, and might hit up some SS along with their usual DH/FR runs, this bike looks like it should fit the bill.
why is it juicy 3's
there a bit low market for that
id of thought atleast juicy 7's or something a bit better than a 50£ break :S

Very good fork! I got those :-)
awesome bike!!!
In my oppinion this bike and a Spz SX trail are the best bikes on this category...

Nice Colton. Bring it out to Mission and put it through the paces on Bear and Arduum.

sexy!!! that has to be the nicest bike in 08 along with the transition dirtbag!!!
for over $3500 i'd expect something a bit better than Juicy 3's and x7
I don't know what everyone's complaining about weight so much. The "all-mighty" BR with an average build is in around 38 pounds. 39 With this spec is reasonable. I'd be willing to bet that if you put this spec on a BR, the Furious would be lighter.
sick frame, shit build, this'd be an alright build for a base level ( it'd be a nice base level with the tstr mind you) but really for a bike like this it should have
rc3's
saint, diablo, or holzfellers for cranks,
juicy 7's or code 7's
mtx's or 725's
and x9 or x0 shifting bits
it's sick but as is i'd rather take the frame and build

i snapped my single track off a little rock popping my tube they suck nuts
So you're saying that you ran into a rock and wrecked your rim and it's the rims fault?? I think it is rider error.
how much and where can i get one XD!
wow colton man
we gotta ride sometiem agian lol
we gotta ride sometiem agian lol
what a brilliant looking bike but don't you think that its got to much travel for 4X?
you are right , 7 inches for 4X ? that's way too much.
i agree that the build is weak for the price ,
i'll check the price of the frame tho , i have a local bike shop that sells these.

this is not a 4X bike, Commencal has the Meta 4X for 4X racing and riding, it is a 4inch bike, the Furious is a 7inch slopestyle/freeride/alpine park bike
haha i guess this is the bike that got stolen on NWD8 lol, Cedric was " furious " towards Brian lopes, but the bike they show must be an early prototype because the rear shock is slightly different position http://www.pinkbike.com/photo/2024722/
thats an older supreme mini dh, not a furious
ugly frame. not that it's not a sweet design it's just ugly. tall and akeward.
thanks for all the great comments the bike is really sick ! everyone saying the bike is to heavy obviously has not riden the bike. it is perfect for anything i have riden. and all the parts on it work amazingly. And even if the juicy three isnt super high quality, like everyone is saying, who needs breaks to go fast??!!
trees make you stop quicker then brakes do anyways right lmao
nice bike but I am sad to know it is made it Taiwan
you look, like a good rider,? wat utter tosh!! fuc me sideways, by a moose in lycra!! i ve got a uzzi, but would love a test RIDE, on this rig!!
i saw u at race the rach!!!! nice bike
man how much for one of those!!
i wish i could tell you but i honlestly have nooooo idea
