Crankworx - Random Goodies

Each summer we make the pilgrimage to Whistler B.C. for the annual Crankworx festival, not unlike the Sea Otter that we all flock to in the Spring. There are races going on daily, folks are showing their wares around the village and at night you'll find something fun to do where ever you go.
Here is a selection of pics from this Crankworx of things you may not have seen,

You don't always find the goods in the pits, this particular bike was chilling with its owner in the parking lot after a day of riding. We're hoping to do a whole feature on the bike at a later date, just waiting on Mr. Lemieux to get ahold of us here at Pinkbike.com.
Sylvain from OGC was on hand showing off the new prototype Opus DH/FR bike - The Nelson. This 7" prototype Freeride bike has been in the prototype stages for just over a year now and they are pretty happy with the out come. It is a virtual pivot point style of bike in regards to how its suspension works. Opus has been working with virtual pivot style bikes for 3 years now in the XC realm, so you can expect this to perform as well as their XC race machines do. Look for a possible test in the winter months.
Since Sylvain is with OGC, he was also part of the crew that were showing off the 2010 Camelbak line up of hydration packs. The new colorway from Camelbak that caught my eye is called A.F.Y. and is available on all of the new AMF (All Mountain Freeride) packs. The AMF series is replacing the Outlaw series of packs. The all new packs are approximately 40% lighter than their Outlaw counterparts, this is due to lighter materials being used as Camelbak learned that their existing packs didn't need to be as robust as they are. More and more users are riding their 6 inch bikes way out into the woods and are wanting to save weight wherever they can. All Camelbak reservoirs come with a Lifetime Reservoir Warranty, so pick one up and get your ride on.
Reece is modeling The Don in A.F.Y. for us:
Stacy Glaser of Painthouse Customs has done a couple websites custom helmets up, including us. I caught up with Stacy in Whistler during the Slopestyle event and he had his custom Santa Cruz Driver 8 on display for us. Stacy is super talented when it comes to painting, and he came up with this chameleon paint job for his newest rig. From directly on its a subtle purple color in the sun light, however when you get it at the correct angle it shifts to green. Sweet looking rig!
As I stated in the initial paragraph, there are races/events going on daily that make Crankworx the festival that it is. But to me it's the events that happen outside the park or away from the chair lift that really help to create a unique vibe that is rarely match by other large venues. With a lot of work from the SRAM, Chromag and Blackbox crews, additional events like the Pig Roast / Wiffle Golf Tournament and the Toonie XC Race were able to go off without a hitch. Fun events like this bring the industry and the public closer together - thanks for the good times.
Start of the Toonie race:
On Thursday some of us media darlings were lucking enough to leave the bike park and head up to Pemberton with the crew from Rocky Mountain bikes for their launch of the all new Rocky Mountain Flatline WC. Check back really soon for the full launch story.
I'd like to leave you with two final pics of cool toys that were at the big show. Picture one is Palmer's Giant Slalom bike that was all kitted out in the best parts and the last shot is of Brandon Semenuk's custom Boxxer with the Tetris inspired graphics.

sweet.. but thats an intense bike not a giant?
The first one is pretty trick, but isn't anything ground-breaking. It looks like it uses the Nicolai g-boxx2...
It is completely different than an Ironhorse 7 Point. The linkages are different. Different lengths, angles, geometry, etc. It is very similar to Giant's Maestro, however, the bottom of the shock mounts to the link instead of the main triangle.
tbh it looks like they have bought a reign and taken the whole back end off andthe rest they have made themselves
remedy8point5, thats what i was thinking when i saw the bike, looking like could be a good bike for someone... cant tell its still in proto stage, and i think the van r shock would need to go, but thats just my opinion

it might look, but its not identical to the maestro link. the bottom of the maestro's shock is set to the frame, this shock floats on the chainstay's link. the evil revolt, the trek and this bike all have shocks fully floating/active at both ends, i find it an intersting direction in bike/sus. design.

check this out http://www.astroeng.com.tw/products.asp similar ? I think astro engineering caters small bike company to build their bikes.... our local bike company also have the same frame that looks exactly like that.
Good find jumphilo. Looks like they also make the KHS Lucky 7/Azonic B-52 as well as the Sette bikes found on Pricepoint.com
Wow, camelbak, tone it down! Those packs are hideous. Why would anyone by those if they look terrible? Yeah they're functional, but everyone in the bike world knows half of it is about functionality and the other half is looks.
I keep preaching simplicity in design, but these companies keep overdoing it!

the driver 8 is the ugliest santa cruz ever built. I will keep my 08 v10 forever because if they start building more shit lik the driver my bike will probably be worth $10,000
I am amazed DW isn't making a fuss. That Opus Nelson's linkage looks pretty DW-ish and Maestro-ish - either way amazing there aren't legal issues. Looks pretty amazing!
