Why doesn't fox use the awesome quick release 20mm through axle on the 40s that they have on the 36s? Maybe because of weight... but that release system is the best I have used! Easier than regular QR with all the beefyness of 20mm.

  • + 1
flag pperini (Apr 14, 2010 at 10:55)
and if they are having all the trouble to make a whole new 180mm fork, why not making it a lil bigger? something like 36 = 160mm, 40 = 203 and 38 = 180 maybe?..a 36 with 180mm is going to look as thin and as "nor robust" as a rs domain..i mean, of course the fork rocks..no questions asked about the performance! but it probably doesnt look as mean and tough as the totems or 66s..

flag freirider (Apr 14, 2010 at 14:40)
pperini: because it costs a hole ton more to manufacture a new size stanction and bushings and lowers and seals and all the other stuff, might as well stick with what they got and keep the prices low as they can.
Es würde echt cool sein, wenn Fox eine 38mm stanction machen würde. Aber zu teuer.

new forks looking nice. hope they are a reasonable price
  • + 2
flag pperini (Apr 14, 2010 at 15:19)
freirider: but thats exactly what im saying..cuz look closely to the fork..the lowers and stantions are NOT the same as the 36! look at the 160 lower, the axle is at the very bottom of the fork, now look at the 180 36 lower, the internal tube goes past the axle, that means the axle is not at the very bottom, the 180 lower is a lot bigger! and cuz of that its also obvious that the stantions are also a lot bigger, so u can have more 20mm exposed but without compromising the stiffnes..yes ok all of the other parts are propably the same..but i dont think that they are the most expensive to remanufacture...und dein deutsch ist echt gut..ich bin aber kein deutscher, ich wohne nur in d-land..ich komme ursprunglich aus brasilien..machs gut!

flag etqmtber (Apr 14, 2010 at 16:44)
I reckon they should use 40 lowers, and some shorter 40 uppers and crown, then they would have a super sick fork and it would be as stiff and strong and the totem. I'm not really a big freeriser but if I was I would definitely take the totem over the 36.

surely the float 180 is only RC2 not RLC2 as there is no lockout adjuster in the pictures nor is it mentioned in the description, only the title, the talas 180 is however RLC, but why that RLC and not the float 180 RLC or both RC2 like the 160 forks?

the 36 talas is a different fork, ie. its 160mm not 180mm. Look at the specs..

by the looks of it, the picture of the talas on this blog, appears to be maybe 2? different version of the talas, one clearluy shows its the 180 one cause the lowers come down further, another shows the 36 one, as the lowers dont come down as far. Fox are realy confusing me now!

flag creamsoda (Apr 14, 2010 at 9:54)
i'm pretty sure this article got it wrong, they got the float and talas switched up. the talas is the one with 180mm travel that weighs 5.2 pounds, and the float 36 160mm is the one that weighs 4.67 pounds. doesn't make sense the other way around, which is what the article is saying.

Yah floodgate isent lockout they are two different things only one is for long travel bikes and the other is for short travel marzochi has it too theirs is called mech. preload pretty much they each have there own method for doing the same thing make the fork stiffer or linear lockout is the most efficient way to do it for short travel and no one has a patent on it that's why every one can use it flood gate and mech. preload are patent systems that do the same thing differently for long travel forks

The QR20 system is licensed from Paul Turner, its basically his Tullio design (as RS Psylo's used about 8 years ago) with a different pop-out lever on the axle. Presumably their license sees them pay royalties on each model its used on, which is why only the Fox 36s get them. The 40s are meant for full on DH bikes and really... fast wheel changes aren't needed on a DH bike, but with the 36s which sell more to AM/FR setups... a quick in-out with the wheel speeds up flat tire repair times when you're being attacked by a million mosquitoes or holding up the group ride or something. Personally I don't see why they don't go to PM's for the 40s lowers.

A longer travel 36 - finally the Fox range is complete!

Every year Fox shows their new line-up and I think - Wow! Fox can't get much better than that - and the very next year, every year, they prove me wrong. I may as well just give them my credit card's pin number.

All of the 40's are internally adjustable...there are spacers that can be moved from the top to the bottom to change the amount of travel. I have 06 40s and it's possible. You just remove the top cap, take out the spring and change where you want them.

I hope that this 36 Talas is finaly the long lost Holy Grail I am waiting for since 6 years! An airsprung fork with a reliable lightweight Travel Adjustment. No one ever made a system that answers these criteria - I hope it's this one!

If they would made Fox36 180 with a reliable travel adjusment range 180-120 I would order it today. I wouldn't care if I would need to take loan, sell a car, TV Laptop. I would buy it straight away! I would also write a petition to CERN laboratory in Geneva to put up there at the entrance a memorial stone with engraved writing: Fox 36 180-120 Talas which changed the biking world forever.

Big props to Fox for refining the stickers, with all the respect to previous versions: but you finaly made something that looks masculine... Former roundish stickers with blue tail were pretty girly...

flag el-shreddo (Apr 14, 2010 at 9:52)
Thing is: Most people riding bikes do this as a hobby and therefore don´t have loads of money to blow on parts. Thus a 100% price increase for, say, a 20-30% better performance doesnt look like a good idea to me. Anyone with a calculator will know that. Let´s hope Fox aims their 180 fork at the mass market ( => totem price levels) and not the few "bling bling" riders that already own umpteen bikes (+ matching BOS forks) and dont know where else to put their money. I love BOS forks - but for average joe they´re just way too expensive.

The new lineup as a whole looks awesome, I love the decals and especially the new coating, let´s hope it really does what they tell us it does...

 no worries paul.

Think about the price for this new 180, look at the price for a top of the range 36 TALAS, its what, 850? All their forks will probably go up by 20-30% due to this bullshit kashima coating, and add another few hundred due to the fact its 20mm longer.

Its going to be a VERY expensive fork,id take the totem if i were you.
  • + 0
flag PauuuuuL (Apr 14, 2010 at 10:54)
Yeah all very good points , haha so true about the coating , I'd like to see if RS do anything different for 2011. They have their Lyriks 180mm Dual Crowns , which I wouldn't mind a go with. See how they perform in comparison seeing as they are quoted to be around £500-£600 range cheaper than both Totem and Floats.

You all should be grateful there are companies out there that make top notch stuff. It progresses the technology and sport in general. I know not everyone can afford $6000 dollar bikes, I cant either, but the fact they exist makes it possible for that tech to trickel down to us mortals within a couple years. To argue that expensive components should not exist is ludacris. Does it upset you that they make Ferraris even though most of us will never get to drive one????

flag SSdomination (Apr 14, 2010 at 10:20)
Thats owners mistake though, nothing to do with the fork itself. It tells you not to over tighten them...
  • + 5
flag bunkey (Apr 14, 2010 at 10:53)
They're called pinch bolts because they should be pinch tight, thats not Fox's fault. A finger and thumb on the short end of the allen key is all thats needed, just make sure you go back and forth between the two untill they're both nipped up properly.

Imo There is no need for QR anything on a downhill bike, except for that Straightline stem of course lol

These forks look amazing but in the past I have had problems with my 2007 40's leaking oil around the stanchions every so often. I sent them into fox to get overhauled, 120.00 USD later, they were leaking again after a couple weeks. I got tired of the maintenance and sold them. Does anyone know if this is still the case or if they are more reliable now?

flag WAKIdesigns (Apr 14, 2010 at 6:28)
heh, in fact many find Boxxer less stable than 40. Rshoxes used to be plusher but at the same time even latest models dive too easily under braking and in burms. Yes what is the lospeed compresion adjustment for? - its surely for that but then your ride just becomes harsher, at the same time if you really bomb the trails you don't experience it that much.

Both Fox and Marzocchi(being the plushest of all at the same time) offer more stable platform without excessive diving. Just look in the racing vids, that zocchi and fox maintain the certain travel level while Boxxers go up and down like maniacs. I own a Lyrik now and I find it less stable and more willing to dive than both of my former MZ 66rc2x and SL.

I wonder why the 40s have an IS mount and the other forks have post mount? Is there some advantage for each one on the particular fork?

Perhaps with post mount the manufacturer can 'suggest' the size of the rotor, but with I.S., the rider chooses whatever size adapter they want.

Post Mount seems a better fitting to me and it can be run with any disc size just as the IS.
I have no clue why the IS is still on the 40's. Does anyone know the answer?

99% of forks with post mount are 160mm rotor compatible and then for bigger rotors you use adaptors. With DH fork it doesnt matter, as you run at least 180mm rotor, so you need an adaptor anyways so it doesnt matter whether this adaptor is a post mount or IS. Plus, take into account that all brake calipers nowadays (thankfuly)have PM so actualy it does not affect the adjustability. One could argue that IS is actualy better as you can just put spacers between the fork mount and the adaptor when your brake positioning adjustment is just not enough (like in mine) so you don't need to drill the caliper socket to enlarge it.

That is my first guess for not using PM on 40, and the second guess as the result of this first one. Look how PM is constructed: you have two small surface contact points coming out of lower leg body whereas in IS you have a long connecting surface, so i believe it is just more construction-wise.

IS mount has one huge advantage, since the bolts that hold the caliper on go through the fork and not into it, if you strip the threads you only need a new caliper mount, and not a whole new fork lower. Perhaps this is more likely to happen on downhill forks, where the brake gets smashed by a rock and strips some of the threads. Or maybe its just because creating a new die for the fork lowers would be expensive and there is really no need to switch to post mount.

Stripping the PMs wouldn't be a problem if anyone spent a bit of extra money/effort to cast stainless steel inserts into the posts. Think about it; you're threading steel bolts into aluminum or magnesium threads...which one is going to fail?! (Hint: it's not the cheap steel bolts).

teagues - I agree, I am always affraid of damaging threads in my fork. Since Magnesium is so soft it's not a hard thing to do. At the same time cast in saintless stuff is just making aunsuspended mass heavier (you would need some certain amount of magnesium around these stainless bores. Since you also put together two different materials joined in process needing high temperatures that also might create problems. I mean its just not worth the complications to me...

rasterman: great point!

I do believe DH forks should stay with IS. All others have to have PM as people must be able to mount caliper for 160 rotor setup without adaptors.

WAKI, we're thinking along the same lines. Since I'm not a metallurgist, I don't know if there's a more cost-effective/easier way to do it.

It would be a bigger deal if I kept a fork for longer than about six months Smile It only took me replacing one set of lowers (due to under-torquing, rather than over-torquing) to learn my lesson...we have precision torque wrenches for a reason, right?

For the likes of my Totem, I absolutely agree: I'd still like a 160mm PM that I can fix a 203mm adapter to. The adapter never has to come off once set, no matter how often you pull your caliper off. And adapters are another cheap thing that one can easily afford to damage/strip...and yet, after all the years of adapter IS mounts, I've still to strip one by over-torquing it...

 Good points all.

Waki and teagues, they could make the post mounts stronger by having a larger magnesium post but with either a helicoil or steel threaded tube. I used to work in a company that made a product whose housing was cast aluminium and we helicoiled everything for extra strength. I can't see why you can't do the same to magnesium.

Unfortunately for me I have center lock hubs& rotors + i have a problem with calier not reaching enough to the hub side. I would need a 0,5mm spacer between hub and fork which is also impossible for me to do as I use Maxle. So stripping off metal on caliper is the only option for me
