Nathan Rennie returns home
by brule
Posted: Jun 25, 2009
Just read this on Nathan Rennie's site that he's returned home for the remainder of the 2009 World Cup season to train and get mentally prepared for the Championships in his home country. After some big crashes early on, he's decided to step back from the circuit and focus on healing.

I agree. It's good that he stepped back a it and is going to focus on training. It doesn't seem as if he is in the best of shape compared to the likes of Gee Atherton, Greg Minnar, Sm Hill, and all of the other top racers. I hope he slays it at Worlds. Good luck Rennie!!
Can someone explain how the world cup works? Isn't it an overall points thing? Because if you just race the championship and win, that doesn't mean anything right?
ChampionshipS? With an S. He made it sound like it was just one. So if it comes down to the championship, why do the other races exist? If you could do one race and win and win it all, why bother with the rest?
The championships is one event seperate from the World Cup series. It is one race with the best racers from the world, the winner is crowned the World champion.
The World cup series is a series taking place at venue around the world in which the racers gain points from each event. Then their is an overall series winner.
The two are seperate from each other. One racer can win the world championship while another can win the world cup. Not always the same racer.

You know what...Alcapone and whitemiscief said it, I would just add this comment...
IT TAKES A LOT OF BALLS TO ACCEPT YOU ARE NOT AT YOUR BEST PERFORMANCE...
Being said that, Rennie, you are a freaking legend, and to me one of the best riders in the world, guess this time off would sink your ideas and spirit to get back in the saddle and ride as the old days...

Interesting, rennie has been around for awhile, gloomy way to look at the start of retirement say the least
wooowww stop.. rennie.. a HAS been??? he's like 27 max.. he's got plenty left in the tank! he's a better guy than most on the world cup scene! he's funny and a stylish mental rider unlike boring sam hill who sends you to sleep whenever he's talking... rennie will be back and he WILL be big again
personality isn't everything. if it was Sam Hill would be at the bottom and CG would be at the top. but it seems to be the other way around.
skills are all that count to sponsors. they want podium results not having a funny guy who constantly gets last place and that nobody has heard of.

nobody anyone as herd of?????? humm ok then, but i get what u mean.. but they work hand in hand, u carnt have a great rider who is a total bell end, either way f*ck this nathan rennie is one of the biggest names on the track and i hope to god he comes back stronger as he's a legend
Last time I checked, Jared Rando still rides for Giant. He seldom gets on the podium. It all depends on who the sponsor is. Some will stick with a guy even if he's not constantly in the top 10.
Maybe Rennie will follow Sick Mick: take a year off, then come back with a vengeance. I hope so...

Something tells me that Moorewood is not getting the results they paid for..."pressure from sponsors"..."depending on my ride at worlds" does this mean he may not be on Moorewood or is he talking about his results? Interesting to say least. Like Hodges said Rennie=god
cut the guy some slack its a simple spelling mistake, Hope rennie does do well at champs, and hope to see him on the seris next year

He certainly doesn't look as healthy as he was a few years ago. Time on the road has likely caught up with him. A bit of time off is good for the mind and the body for sure, just look at Hannah.
hes definatly NOT A QUITER.
can you not read,
but good example with Hannah hes completely killing it imo

No dude, this is a polite way of rennie saying, I'm to f*cking old for this stuff. I'm racing in austrailia to pay my rent
i think that tending to old injuries that have started back up is a smart decision....if they're not tended to they may never subside.
Bad knees sucks. Believe me, mine is ruined but luckily, riding is the best thing for it. Having said that, it's road riding that helps a knee heal and most DH'ers aren't raodies at heart, so returning to full strength on a DH bike and not re-injuring a blown knee without taking tons of time off to put in lots of road riding rehab just causes your knee to regress. Time off big bikes is definitely called for to recover THE RIGHT WAY.
Good for him. I think it's pretty obviuos that raw bike handling talent is not enough to compete with the top WC guys. You've gotta be CRAZY fit and healthy... If Rennie can muster the discipline to train and refocus, maybe we'll see him back on top!

Rennie and likes of Kovarik have both got what it takes to be the best, but neither of them are/were slaying it this year - you could see how pissed Rennie was when he went down at La Bresse, taking the time off to get his injuries healed and mind back in gear is definitely the right move, otherwise he'll never get back to the top again!
I don't know about this. As people mentioned above - this is his JOB. Pressure from sponsors? Please. Do you think Lebron James could tell his sponsors that he's just going to sit a few games out to get himself back in order in the middle of the playoffs? I'm sorry, but I don't agree with this move. If it's based on injuries, then fine - leave it at that. Don't blame your sponsors for pressuring you to win, when you're a top rider.
I Agree. Ad the fact that BOS and morewood are small companies compared to most of the other brands they need big visibility to sell their (good) products.
Too bad forBOS they already had trouble with Fabien Pedemanaud it seems they sponsor the wrong guys.
N. Rennie is surely a great rider but on this particular move ok for the injury but blaming the sponsors for pressure on a competition WTF ?

I can imagine how much pressure Morewood and Bos are putting on him to get results, they are both small companies with small budgets. How could they justify spending hundreds of thousands of dollars shipping Rennie around the world and paying him to do it if they not getting the exposure they need. As I see it, this most likely was a joint decision between Rennie and his sponsors, his injuries are slowing him down and obviously Kenda Morewood arent getting their monies worth so they decided to call it quits, stop spending money on something thats benefiting neither party and give the big man a chance to heal up and hopefully get back into the top 5 at worlds.
as far as talent go....he is second to none for is size....but it seems like rennie always as some bs excuses when he as a bad race...just listen to all of his after race comments he does...can't handle the pressure of wc,hit the bricks pal!!!!
Hope he will be back and show what he's able to. Yesterday I saw him in NWD 5 or 6 and he has great allround skills (also in Jindabayne 2002 he proofed what he can do..).
for me he's the guy who was there like forever, so if he managed till now, he knows what he's doing. besides breakes often do good, so rest and then kick ass!!
[Reply]
Rennie should just leave Morewood and ride for Evil along with Vanderham, and smith. Everyone needs to take a break from the offensive. There is no place like home. Good people, good relaxing, auzzie vag, and a one of a kind comfort zone to train in. Good luck!
I was kinda expecting this. he made the right decision.
I agree with enduro. I don't know if morewood was the right choice.
let the neg propping start.

i saw him a few weeks ago and he didn't look as trim as he used to be and his performance wasn't his best either. it did mick hannah a world of good and i think he's doing the right thing. i'm sure he'll come back stronger, fitter and faster! good luck!
NATHAN ! Dude hopefully you dont feel bad about your decision. It is smart and will get you where you want. Never forget your just like PEAT ! So get it straight and enjoy whatever's on your way. Im sure we will see you back soon
credit crisis, people will not pay for riders to race around the world if they are not getting results, lets hope he finds some speed at the worlds that will get him a fresh ride and he can get thngs going again, but then.. thats what this year was going to be.. fresh start new focus..
Good on Nathan, you never know he might win the worlds in Canberra, take the year off (do a Mick Hannah) come back in 12 months and love the sport again and just rip up the track again.
Well if your in Sydney come up to Ourimbah, we would love to show you how much fun our club is and everybody is welcome (Fabian Barel had a race with us last year and loved the track and had a fun race day)

Obviously, but if he does WC and races in Australia he's pretty much riding the whole year. If he's hurt during the WC season, he might as well get healed up rather than continue to have bad results and make the injuries linger. If he can get healty for Worlds, then take that momentum into Australia he might be set up for a strong 2010 WC season.
thats what im saying i think he is spreading himself a little thin is all. plus i dunno....whatever.

I am just throwing this out there (as I like Stomper and wish him well) - but is he an automatic pick for the Aussie team? The team quota is seven and he is currently ranked 8th out of the run of Aussies. He did not win the Nationals, which was taken by Mick and with a couple of WC before the team is finalised, he might not be even ranked 8th in the end... I think he deserves the spot if fit - but the Cycling Australia have been known to stick to the criteria over common sense!
He's had a couple of shitty years, lots of ups and downs and done a serious amount of soul searching already. If he needs some more time to get it together or at the least to feel competitive I say we give him all the time he needs. In the end Rennie is a major reason that World Cup DH is worth watching and when he's ready he should be welcomed back with open arms and a whole lot of cow bell! Good luck at the Worlds, give em Hell.
Smart move on Rennie's part. Look at Mick Hannah this year. Took a year off and has only missed one podium. Good on ya mate, good luck at the worlds.
Cheers

Good for him, stressful conditions rarely produce good results. Having your sponsors climbing up yours ass commanding you to win or they'll drop you simply doesn't create an environment where an athlete can truly excel.
look at the syndicate team, probably the most relaxed and chill team, and they are frickin' killing it this year. I hope he does well at worlds and returns to the top where he belongs

i think it's s tught desicion, he can have biger problems later, if he goes for a break e can get 100% fit, and if e rides, he can opne injuries that keep im from ride. I would keep riding if i had injuries, but that's me, and for now a tinhk in having some fun... only next year i ride serousli in competition, he rides always the best he can
He is doing the smart thing. 27 is far from "has been" and by taking time out to get his mind and body right for a serious challenge, he is likey prolonging his career.
The "pressure from sponsors" is alway going to come when you have injuries that are perceived to be the kind that you can ride through. Anyone that has had a nagging injury knows that not being able to perform at your best leaves you frustrated as all hell. Best to step back and get healthy. Healthy riders have a shot at the podium. And that always keeps the sponsors happy.
Hope you get sorted and come out all guns blazing Stampy.

This will probably earn negative props, but it's the truth: substance abuse.
Everyone needs to stop thinking about it like he has a choice, or like it's a sprained kneee. It's a substance problem and he needs to clean up. Props for dealing with it.
To all the pinkbike kiddies that don't understand, or blame work ethic or whatever, just cut the dude some some slack and let him straighten out his life. Even if you can't understand how people get into this situation, some people eventually end up there. Again just cut him some slack. This isn't like bouncing back from a injury.

rennie, try some thing new for training. the definition of crazy is doing the same thing expecting a different result.
look in to raw foods it will change your bodey and your mind. it will give you a new outlook on things
enjoy the journey

exactly just ride, and if like it s too much pressure, not any fun for you now, or you re not commited 100% then quit racing WORLD CUP.... and ride for pleasure, wether your name is sam hill, n rennie or c gracia doesn t really matter honestly!!!
if it s injury and that i do have an idea on what it s like WITH 2 MENISK surgeries on left knee last year...It s minor surgery, but mine is still f*cked which means can t do any impact on it even jogging 200 yards is impossible.... or else the next day it s drama and hard core!!! on a regular basis, i walk 4 hours straight basta!!!
so yeah if its surgery issues, health comes first, leave it time, enjoy yourself then eventually make a comeback...THE biking industry also offers job not only to riders, but also dvlpt manager prod....the things you do if it s just about the money with no passion in it, then it turns a full bore at some point , no???

cause i suppose he wouldn t quit just because of bad results alone....well i did, in bmx in 1983....the racing became a bore...riding was ok...

fact of the matter is everyone needs to stop blowing smoke up his arse. He needs to pull his head in and train like a professional athlete if he is to come close to winning the worlds. believe what you want but no one will know the truth but those closest to him!!!!
