17 Bicycles Stolen from Norco Storage Facility

by Tyler Maine

Source: Norco Bikes

This past weekend Norco had their off-site storage facility broken into. The thieves in question went straight for the goods, stealing a selection of high-end Norco Downhill, Freeride and Haro BMX bicycles.

Read on,

If there is one thing, for better or worse, that will get a group of cyclists riled up, it is bike theft. It is something that affects us all, but when our communities unite it is something that we can put a stop to.

We are putting the call out to all riders in the Vancouver BC area to help us keep an eye out for the Norco and Haro bicycles below. Whether it is online, on the trail, from the back of a van or elsewhere we are asking that you please contact your local Police immediately if you come across anyone trying to sell these bicycles, frames or parts kits from them.

The bikes that were stolen are:

• 10 x 2011 Norco Team Dh:
www.norco.com/bikes/mountain/dh-race-gravity/team-dh/

• 2 x 2011 Norco 250:
www.norco.com/bikes/mountain/dirt-street/250/

• 1 x 2011 Norco Shore 2.0:
www.norco.com/bikes/mountain/freeride/shore-2/

• 2 x 2011 Haro 400.2 BMX:
www.harobikes.com/bmx/bikes/400-Series/5/

• 2 x 2011 Haro 400.3 BMX:
www.harobikes.com/bmx/bikes/400-Series/6/

These bikes should be easy to spot! Of the bikes stolen, the 2011 Norco Team Dh’s had just arrived at Norco and only one dealer and a couple of Norco staff have possession of these bicycles in Western Canada. This makes the Dh’s unique and easy to spot as they have custom decals and a full Saint group, so if you notice anyone posting either complete bikes or parts for sale or riding the new bikes that are not associated with Norco again please let the Police know ASAP.

The West Coast riding scene is made up of some of the most dedicated cyclists around and we appreciate your help in trying to stop the low down scum and scourge of the cycling scene – bicycle thieves. With your help we are hoping to nail these thieves and we thank you for helping us stop the “fun-wreckers.”

Any of you guys ever actually been in a bike storage facility? They're usually unmarked buildings with hundreds of bikes on racks, often in leased warehouse space. Security is tough to guarantee, since you could load 17 bikes in probably 3 minutes (with 2 or 3 people). I'm not surprised to hear this, and it's a totally different type of theft than the Interbike deal.

Does nobody have insurance? I am positive Norco does. Even for my small business having coverage for $1 million in goods and materials is mandatory for operations. I don't agree with anyone stealing bikes but when mine was stolen I had a cheque in the mail from my home insurance policy the next day. Ended up costing me less than $100 to replace.

Also, insurance policies do not generally increase because of theft. Due to the fact that it is a property claim and cannot be proven to be Norco's fault (even if an employee left a door unlocked) the only accountability is with the insurance company. It isn't like a motor-vehicle claim.

And Will-BrownGT, the word you are looking for is coincidental not ironic.

I dont know what the big deal is about, for one these companies have insurance sooooo, and for two if they dont they can always report it as a loss against there income saving almost all in taxes.

Now if someone steatls a bike from me thats a different story, one big fat loss.

Either way I dont agree with it just glad it wasnt personal bikes.
  • + 6
flag greymon (Oct 20, 2010 at 11:23)
Insurance claims add to product cost, which ultimately have to get passed on to the consumers (you and me). Trying to write off a loss doesn't mean you magically get back the $$ spent on development and production. Still a financial loss in a tight industry.
  • + 1
flag jizsplatt (Oct 20, 2010 at 11:27)
yup u right they can always tax loss swap it!
where as we simpletons cannot and have to accept a loss, and it is not all about the money, it is about the fact that we put blood sweat and tear into our bikes and that is what kills!
  • + 2
flag stever (Oct 20, 2010 at 11:52)
While I agree with BJAMIN's comments, greymon also has a good point. In addition, I think it's good to just get thieves into jail in general. The same guys that stole the bikes from Norco could be breaking into your garage as well.

On a side note, would it be in poor-taste to post a satirical "for sale" ad on PB for some brand new, fresh from the warehouse, 2011 Norcos?

Maybe a WTB add for 10 norco team dh's would be more appropriate. Then you wont be investigated for being the theif but still get all the laughs.

Realistically at this amount of theft I could see these being sold in a croked store. Its hard to stealthily unload 10 of everything brand new even if it is stripped down. In the past I've witnessed sports junkies buying a couple thousand dollars worth of brand new stuff in multiples for trade in value. No questions asked. Never bought anything from there after.

I can't imagine what bike shop would touch hot merchandise, since you can't offer warranty on it. You would basically have to tell the customer it was hot. More likely that the bikes will be shipped and sold overseas. If they were to stay local, I would suspect at the very least that they would be re-painted and passed off as second-hand.

Excuse me? I don't appreciate what you're implying.
  • + 1
flag stever (Oct 22, 2010 at 7:18)
I was simply making a point that a thief who was sophisticated enough to identify, target, and break into a warehouse full of expensive bikes, wouldn't be stupid enough to to try to fence the bikes through a bike shop, as Kevinthelilbiker had suggested. Also, my comments are not "coaching" thieves, but instead, actually are, "positive feedback on how to stop the a*sholes" because if you're going to recover the bike, you have to know where to look. You've got a lot of negativity in your posts, it's not cool.

flag stever (Oct 25, 2010 at 7:06)

I hate people who steel bikes from riders. I don't think I put someone who steals from a company warehouse in the same catagory as the guy who cuts my lock off.

A guy who loses his bike to a filcher is on the hook. Norco loses some bikes and they just get some dough from their insurance company or slam an extra $10 onto next year's bikes.

2012 Team DH will be $5,566.00.

guys will probably buy new frames from different companies like trek which offers saint specs, throw the stolen goods on the frame ride it and sell it as a used session. as far as the frame goes either get rid of it or wait a while for the popularity of this bike to go up. what is good to think about is the stolen property wont hardly gross near the value of the stolen goods at retail price and there is the chance they get caught. bunch of nervous ass wipes hoping they made free money, which really isnt free especially if they get caught.

In Colorado you are legally allowed to defend your property with deadly force! So you walk in on them jacking your bike and you shoot them! Criminals should not have rights to sue the people they were victimizing!

The answer is 'yes'. I think she was TPing his neighbours house in a little school prank.

a similar thing is happening here in Ontario, this guy attempted to steal some things from a store and the owner caught him and held him down till the police showed up. now the owner is being sued for assault for using force to hold the thief down.

If by little girl you mean a few teenagers, and if by shot you mean held on the ground with a BB gun till the police got there, then yes. The teenagers had been TPing his house and he came out with a BB gun and held them there until the police and the parents arrived. Hardly a good case to bring up against gun control in the US. Just because people are allowed to own guns and defend themselves with them, does not mean that we are all going to walk around with spurs on our boots getting into duels in the streets.

@jizsplatt No, I was responding to iamamodel's comment about a little girl being shot in Colorado for trespassing. It seemed that he was trying to say that we should not have the right to defend ourselves and our property because someone will make a mistake and overreact. However, the incident he cited dealt with some teenagers that were vandalizing a man's house and he held them there with a BB gun and a baseball bat until the police got there. Not exactly the same as a little girl being shot by a man for walking on his lawn. Misinformation perpetuates the idea that the US is a violent country, and I hate seeing it!

crazyoldcoot, I wasn't referring to the incident you speak of, but another one, which most definitely did happen - I checked with my friends in Colorado yesterday.

My point was that defending a bike with deadly force is a little over the top, don't you think? I mean, not even your legal system would give the death penalty for a stolen bike, so why should an ordinary citizen who is untrained and unqualified to dish out the law end someone's life?

Without seeking such things out, I've come across the bodies of an entire family killed in a murder/suicide. I've seen gunshot victims. I've had someone threaten to shoot me dead. I've been to a few countries in my life, but all these things happened to me in only one country. Can you guess which one? Hint: you think this country is not violent.

flag crazyoldcoot (Oct 25, 2010 at 20:53)
I agree that one should not take someone's life to defend something as insignificant as a bike. However, the fact that it is a possibility makes criminals less likely to try and steal your stuff. I have not heard of the case you are talking about, but it would seem that the man who shot the girl is at fault, not the law allowing him to defend his property. At some point people need to take responsibility for themselves and use some common sense. This includes not only the criminals that are thinking about victimizing someone, but also the ones that may be victimized. The laws of the land should not punish the ones who reasonably defend their property and their safety with force. Especially like Jizsplatt's case in England where he may now be sued by the criminal for reasonably defending his bike. Would I shoot someone who is trying to steal my bike? No way. But I would definitely threaten to shoot them. If they call my bluff, then I guess they needed it more than I did to risk their life.

it cannot be that hard to track them down i mean come on ,
this is definitely not the first time these guys have stolen bikes , look up the guys with prevalent bike thief records, look up and see if any of them have a van. Look back to similar crimes from warehouse thefts in the past , what are the similarities, how did they get it in ? how recently had the bikes been moved . I bet a few dedicated days hustlin the streets, twisting a few arms and you could find out a lot.
Also to be able to get in and out they would need some "intelligence" on the warehouse and the presence of the bikes . Employees with criminal records , employees with vans , new employees , ex employees . If I had the time and lived in Van, I would really enjoy the hunt . Someone should take up the mission ! Feel bad for the company because not only will their insurance premiums go up a lot ( $50,000 for what i estimate their coverage would be would be a significant precentage increase, not to mention the fact they will definitely figure out some better security .
Unlucky norco , best of luck

Apparently it's not that hard. The bike storage room in my residence in Kamloops got broken into once. Altogether about 15 bikes were stolen - Demo 9's, Team DH's, high end stuff - including my Norco. Could have used a truck hauling a big flat deck and strapped them all down. I'll tell you though... worst sight walking into a room usually filled with bikes and seeing every one over $1500 gone.

ok, your right, it is not the end of the world, but the comment sounds like....'whatever' and some of us here [including myself] have been ripped off for our rides, and it's not really about Norco being insured, it's about the serious ripple effect this has on all of us: higher insurance rates from theft means higher bike prices, and many Norco customers not getting their new bike soon or at all now [ Norco cannot just snap their fingers and presto they have a whole new order of rides ] you have some idea that Norco is just another heartless money grabbing corporation that won't lose sleep over this and i can tell you, as much as they are trying to make money they still sponsor and work in many ways to help create the scene that you are enjoying...just saying, it's more than about insurance...nuff said.

I have no pity for Norco. Based on what dealers pay and what Norco likely marks up before they sell to the dealer the retail prices of the bikes are almost meaningless. Besides, what will they do it they're recovered? Fix them up and sell then to an unsuspecting dealer as a new bike?

Hey asshat, it doesn't matter if you like them or not. I can assure you they will not "go bust", and unfortunately thefts like this affect all of us. It drives up the prices of companies doing buisness, to stop this kinda crap. When they pay more we pay more. And besides hate Norco or not that hardtail is dead sexy.
