Red Bull 5000 Down - This Weekend!

Mountain bikers gear up for mass start downhill race as Red Bull 5000 Down will hit Whistler Mountain Bike Park on September 11 and 12, 2010 featuring the greatest North American and European riders, including: Stevie Smith, who recently took sliver at the UCI Mountain Bike & Trials World Championships, MX1 National Pro Dusty Klatt, and 2008 World Champions siblings Gee and Rachel Atherton.

- From peak to village, mountain bikers will descend over 2,182m in hopes of crossing the finish line first -

With new features on the lower half of the course, the competitors will navigate through the elements of a challenging course in hopes of crossing the finish line first. Starting at the Peak of Whistler Mountain, the riders will traverse a similar course to 2009, but will experience a new path as they will go down the Expressway, the upper section of Angry Pirate, World Cup single track, Ho Chi Min, Heart of Darkness, Canadian Open traverse to the finish into the skier’s plaza.

Presented by RockShox, Red Bull 5000 Down is a mass start downhill mountain bike race where the international and local elite need to sustain constant mental and physical effort to maintain control during the intense bar-to-bar racing descent. Over the course of two days, over 250 men and women will battle side-by-side, dealing with fatigue and navigate through muddy and wet dirt trails riddled with jumps, stunts, drops and root-strewn terrain.


RED BULL 5000 DOWN SCHEDULE

SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 11 – QUALIFYING (in the Garbanzo Zone)
Qualifying: 12pm-6pm
Results posted at finish: 6:30pm

SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 12 – RACE DAY (from the peak)
Women’s Mass Start: 11am
Men’s Mass Start: 12pm
Awards Ceremony: 2pm

The event is free to the spectators in the Whistler Village.

IMPORTANT NOTE: On Saturday, September 11, one lane of the Sea-to-Sky highway will be closed.


LAST CHANCE TO ENTER
Categories are open to both men and women of 17 years old and over. Each racer will have to qualify on Saturday, September 11 for a spot in the race on Sunday, September 12. The fastest 250 riders will move on to the race on Sunday. Registration ($80 for pass holders and $90 for non-pass holders) is open until September 9 at www.eventsonline.ca/events/redbull5000down and includes race plate and a two-day pass to the Whistler Bike Park.

No on-site registration will be available.

 5000 ft descent or is it 5 k altitude?

 Neither, in the article it says 2182m altitude, but that in feet is 7158ft, maybe its 5000m of horizontal track?

 please don`t missunderstand me...I really like enduro dh...and it`s a great thing that this sport is growing, but, at leats in my case, there isn`t that ``woooahh`` feeling anymore, when hearing about another enduro dh race

 yeah the 5000 Down is an endure dh race but it's only 20min for the average punter. The Megavalanche if i'm not mistaken is more like 1 hour of dh racing. That is f'ing epic and will never lose it's WOW factor IMO.

 Its pretty wicked to watch man. I was sitting at GLC with my leg in a cast Frown drinking a beer in the rain watching the race last year. Its was pretty cool.
