Red Bull Exodus hit Whistler Blackcomb for first-ever mass start downhill mountain bike race in Canada!

On September 4th and 5th, 2009 mountain bikers will gather at the peak at Whistler Mountain, at Whistler Blackcomb resort in British Columbia and will descend more than 2,182m and a vertical of 1,530m in order to cross the finish line in the Whistler Village. All riders will need to sustain constant physical and mental effort in order to maintain control during the entire descent, which will take approximately 35 to 45 minutes for the fastest participants.

- From glacier to village, mountain bikers will navigate through a challenging course in hopes of crossing the finish line first -

Red Bull Exodus is a mass start downhill race that will see 200 men and women starting simultaneously from the snow-capped peak, proceeding to fly down the mountain past the Roundhouse Lodge, entering the world-famous Whistler Mountain Bike Park at the top of the Garbanzo Express chairlift, before riding the Park’s giant slalom course and then finally crossing the finish line in the Whistler Village. Over the course of two days, participants will be challenged by bar-to-bar racing as they battle side-by-side, dealing with fatigues and navigating through dirt trails riddled with jumps, stunts, drops and root-strewn terrain.

The event will draw some of the greatest North American and European riders to Whistler Blackcomb, offering a mass start downhill mountain bike race never before seen in Canada. Among the riders will be a combination of the sport’s emerging and established superstars, including Red Bull Rampage 2009 winner Brandon Semenuk, Robbie Bourdon, Darren Berrecloth, Shaums March, Red Bull Rampage 2001 Utah winner Wade Simmons, Tyler Morland, Thomas Vanderham, and Whistler Moutain Bike ParkBike Park Pro Team rider Dave Watson.

My trig might be a little rusty, but a course length of 2182m and a vertical drop of 1530m would make for a mighty steep descent...the course is much longer than 2.182km I'd assume.

flag w-e-w (Aug 12, 2009 at 9:57)
yeah... they f'd up the write-up... that would be about a 48 degree pitch.. which would take about 30 seconds and end in a mass grave of body and bike parts. Tristan made sense of it above.

Although that might be why they're requiring full body armor I guess?

w-e-w,
30 secs is assuming theres nothing in the way. its gonna take 35-40mins for the fastest cause they gotta ride through Ice pack up top, that's gonna be a lot of crashes.

flag w-e-w (Aug 13, 2009 at 14:28)
guys.. summit = 2182m, village = 600m, vert. drop = 1500m. The course will be way, way longer than 2km.. 5 or 10 times that i'd guess.

will the hill still be open for riding with the exception of the runs used in the race?
