Gulevich, Brule, and Splinter - Washington and Oregon Road Trip - Part 3

April 8, 2008

Published by brule

The trip is cruising along nicely with the locals being great guides and the weather holding out for good times in the riding department. Since I have been off the comp and a little beat up I decided to take a day off and get some work done, while Gully and Splinter hit up the trails of Post Canyon.

Here's a look at the fun they had. Lot's of videos inside!

Loaded up and heading to Post Canyon

Splinter here. Tyler had to do some work at an internet café, so Geoff and I headed up to Post Canyon with Miles (ShovelPick) and Mike (PostCanyonLoc) - two rad dudes who are always stoked to ride. We dropped Miles' vehicle off at the bottom of Glory Days and loaded into my truck and shuttled up the hill. We rode Glory Days, which was a wicked fun, short trail with doubles, hips, and step ups.

En route to the trail, I had two ‘confidence' breaker crashes. Basically I crashed twice on things that I would never normally crash on, but because I was fighting the good fight against a gnarly head cold, it was understandable. Geoff went and hit everything first, followed by Mike and Miles. Once I was composed, I followed suit, and hit the first double, which was a piece of cake. Geoff continued to send it, same with Mike and Miles. I was having my issues, with a combination of head cold and heavy forks (ok I know they aren't heavy, but I was dropping the front end a ton). After the short, super fun trail was done, I decided that I would ingest more cold medication and become the shuttle guy. Geoff, Mike and Miles then rode Frankenstein, and two more Glory Days laps, before we called it a day for more Mexican food and to pick up Tyler (with Mexican food sans a fork) and back to Dakine for a bit.

Mike shot this jump of Gully:

Howdy, it's Geoff now!

After we had all that jolly good fun; Tyler and I went back Syncline for another “Crybaby” run. That trail runs along a massive cliff edge for a good portion of the ride. Man, I hate those cliffs so bad! Hahaha…

Here is a video from last year's visit to Post Canyon where Brule and Radek ran into Shaums March, Wayne Goss and crew for a few full length Post Canyon Rips. Unfortunately this year there is a LOT of snow way up high:

The next morning it was time to pack up and hit the road for the Black Rock Mountain Bike Area outside of Falls City Oregon. We couldn't leave town until we ate Breakfast at Bette's again and Geoff needed to get Pizza for the road too. A quick stop off at Dakine to say hi and thanks to Chico and we were on our way.

Loaded up and on the road.

Black Rock:

The following day, we continued our journey; off to the middle of nowhere Oregon to ride the “Black Rock Mountain Bike Area”. These trails were so well built and had such an amazing flow to them; we couldn't stop riding… Trails like “Brake Check,” “Granny's Kitchen",”Stickter Gnar” and “Granny's Doubles” were built to perfection and made the whole trip and hike unforgettable for me. The only way to describe the joy I experienced would be to combine Christmas and a candy store all in one little mountain. -Gully

Splinter's turn-

Since we're now onto Black Rock. We rode there for about 4 hours. The only way to get there is to hike up, and make the trails really worth while. At the top of Granny's Kitchen, there is a drop, followed by an 18 or so foot double. Geoff, after hitting them, tells me to go off the drop, then just let go of the brakes, and the doubles will be fine. I say “OK”. I hit the drop, and slightly touch the brake, then the little cartoon thought cloud pops up and Geoff says to me in an Obe Wan voice, “Don't touch the brakes James”, so I fly down the hill, hit the double, and clear it…barely! I have to try that again! This time, I hit the drop, then don't touch my brakes, and clear the double nicely. It was such a dialed double, it was probably the best double I've ever done.

Splinter staying off the brakes

Then we hit the Cheese grader drop. Geoff says “See ya later” to which I reply, “why, are we meeting at the bottom?” As I then watch Geoff go off the lip of the cheese grader, clear the drop part of it, and land on the tranny. I started screaming profanities of joy, and explained to Geoff that's why he's a professional mountain bike rider and I'm a Police officer.
Then Geoff did it again, after I got the camera ready, and Tyler was filming it. And it was my turn. I rode over the lip, and after catching my BB on the lip, I rolled the drop and cleared the landing. It was a sweet drop, that couldn't have been built better.

Our video of our day at Black Rock:

A ways down Granny's Kitchen, there is a road gap. I've never hit a road gap before, and frankly, they scare the poop out of me. Geoff says “It's so sweet, just train me into it.” I reply, “OK”. So, Geoff and I hike back up, and start flying down the trail, as soon as I see the gap, I freak out, Geoff hits the gap, and I slam on the brakes. Meanwhile, Tyler is filming it all, and I just blurt out “I'm not ready for something like this. After a little consultation with Geoff, 3 roll ins on the lip of the road gap, I decided that it was time to conquer my fears. I hit the road gap, cleared it nicely, cheered, and high fives, and it was time to hike back up and do it again. After I cleared it a second time, we all decided we should ride the rest of the trail, but, before we head out, Geoff says “Wanna hit it one more time?” YOU BET!

All in all, my time in Black Rock was super rad. I can't wait to go back there again. Yes, you have to hike 2000ft up to get to the mad trails, but it is so worth it. The trails are so buff, and so perfectly dialed, it's absolutely amazing. It's the perfect place to take a girl on a first date

The frame is anodized and decals don't stick, so he used a stencil and painted his logo on it and some over stray got on the shock reservoir on one side.

that's what i was wondering, i bet the rocky marketing department doesn't like that much...if he's hitting that stuff on an sxc, do we all really need an SS? i know he's smoother, but i'm not doing stuff half that big. hmmm....

flag brule (April 9, 2008 at 12:23) (Below Threshold) show comment
Yes he is on an SXC, but it has aluminum stays (not carbon). He's waiting on his SS as the Geo. is better suited to that style of riding, but he's riding what he's got for a bike as it's that or his hard tail at the moment.

For clarification, I didn't film the video, I just posted it for my friend Jamie (fingalingdanny on this site), although I am a rider in it, as is . All props for the Black Rock 2007 video should go to him.

Props to Splinter for boosting the big gap up top and hitting the road gap. That road gap helped me conquer a lot of fears, and makes everything else just a little easier. I actually had the road gap dialed for a few trips before I ever hit the big gap up top. To me, that one was a biggie, but one where you say "I was afraid of that?" after you hit it. Damn, I love that feeling!!

Gully makes things look too easy. C'mon Geoff, at least make it look like it's an effort for ya...
