Lapierre has been an active member of the international race circuit for many years now. For 2010 the French company has decided to take their sponsoring activities to the next level in order to reflect their export ambitions by creating a new “Team Lapierre International”, composed of the world’s best DH, Enduro and XC riders.

Newsletter N° 1 Team Lapierre International

DH Riders:

Sam Blenkinsop (NZ):
A young rider (21 years old), Sam already has a long list of podiums and even a World Cup victory under his belt. Talented, humble, and fast, Sam will be the leader of the new DH team.

“I’m excited to ride for Lapierre next season. It’s going to be great to ride alongside 10 time World Champ Nico Vouilloz, someone I really respect. I’m really looking forward to getting to know everyone on the team. I reckon the bike is the best looking bike out there and I can’t wait to start testing next month. After learning so much with my last team, I’m really looking forward to this new chapter in my career with Lapierre”.

Sam is personally sponsored by Adidas Eyewear, Five Ten and Skull Candy.

Nicolas Vouilloz (FR):
Known as E.T. on the race circuit, the nickname is more than fitting for the man known for his incredibly clean speed. Nicolas has decided to participate in the 2010 Enduro races, along with a selection of prestigious rally car races (Monte Carlo and San Remo). Known for his attention to detail, you’ll also probably catch him hanging out at the DH race paddocks this year in his role as product developer for Lapierre…

Nicolas is personally sponsored by Bos Suspensions and the Alpe d’Huez ski and MTB resort.

Sam Flockhart (UK):
Even though he was still in the junior category last year, Sam finished 15th in the overall of the Maxxis Cup in 2009! Determined, a hard worker, and virtually fearless, Lapierre has added this young and talented British rider to its roster. His main objective will be to learn from his more experienced teammates, Sam and Nico.

Cross country riders:

As was previously announced, the XC team will be composed of three French riders: Alexis Vuillermoz (2nd place at the 2009 U23 World Championships and current U23 French national champion), Cécile Ravanel (2008 and 2009 French national champion), and Cédric Ravanel (6th place at the 2009 World Championships).

All three riders finished the 2009 season strong and will continue to work towards the upcoming Olympic Games in London.

Program:

Team Lapierre International will be present at the World Cups, French Cups, the Sea Otter Classic, Whistler Festival, Enduro Series, and the various national and international championships.

A word from Gilles Lapierre (managing director, Lapierre):

“At Lapierre, we’ve always been passionate about racing, and we’ve actively sponsored riders at all levels since the late eighties. We’ve had the opportunity to work with some excellent athletes in the past, and for 2010 we’re excited to offer a professional structure and healthy race environment to some new riders. With the help of our partners, we’ve put together a top-level package with high-quality equipment and experienced management, so that our riders will be able to concentrate on their racing.”

Management:

For this new project, Lapierre will continue working with Pure Agency (www.pureagency.fr), a marketing and communication agency specialized in sports. Having worked together for three years now, Pure Agency has proven their efficiency in team management as well as communication and media relations.

Simplicity, creativity, respect: it’s with these building blocks that projects are born and then developed at Pure Agency since 2007. Surrounded by people who are passionate about what they do, we find our motivation in the pleasure and desire to move forward towards a common goal.

“Cyril (competition manager) and I have without a doubt one of the best MTB teams on the circuit to manage,” says Laurent Delorme, founder and manager of Pure Agency. “Our challenge will be to make sure the riders are comfortable and confidant by providing them with everything they need during the season and especially on race day. We will work hard with the technicians and partners to provide the best bikes possible, so that everyone can enjoy the results!”

first of all, I love yeti.
I think that their products are high quality and have a real race attitude to them.
however, I think that Lapierre being one of the smaller names in the business makes amazing bikes as well.
I don't really think Yeti gave Sam the attention he deserved because I know that when his time comes (aka when peaty steps down xD) he is going to be one of the best riders out there. keep in mind he is only 21.

As Mark Flockhart will say, "My Sam was absolutely flying.."
Good news for the Flockhart camp, well done boys.
Sam will be in his first year of Juniors in 2010, place your bets now for some good odds on Flockhart for Junior World Champion. Mark i'll have a tenner at 10:1.

What team will Danny Hart be on in 2010? No doubt one of the teams, perhaps the biggest there is out there?

Lets see.

Great move for Sam and Lapierre, Lapierre wants to concentrate on growing their markets outside of Europe and this will help. Yeti will still market to their home US market with Gwin. So its a win win, not to even mention having a little Nico rub off on Sam.

whatever. pro bike riders ride the bikes they ride because somebody's PAYING them.
it doesn't mean lapierre is worth anything. they weren't worth anything to anyone before, so why now?
they're just another one of those companies making stupid light bikes that are going to break all the time
and when that happens, good luck getting a bike warrantied from france
how well has it worked with commencals? anybody familiar with that bullshit?
but not to be all negative
Way to get paid for bike riding Sam! good luck with the winning!
but bring some spare frames everywhere you go

flag sherdforlife (Dec 10, 2009 at 1:03)
yeti's are f*cken light Bigtard...and the 09 303's have a weild fault in the top tube that makes a big ugly dint the first time you ride and not to mention yetis are notorious for craking. and also yeti have stoped production of the 303 alltogether wich is stupid because its an amazing bike even if it craks. although i ride an rdh i will addmit that it is nothing like a 303.

flag bigtard (Dec 10, 2009 at 10:37)
 was i talking about yeti's?
no i wasn't. but they're crap too, it just happens i wasn't focusing on them. because the article has nothing to do with them
stay on topic alright, crappy french bikes was the topic
but since you mentioned it. how is a bike that cracks all the time amazing?
that would be one of the qualities in a bike that would define it as NOT amazing
two more words for you

I agree Yeti does seem like a great company to ride for with a seemingly great family. However, there are situations you will face when making a move can be for the better. Staying with the same group, no matter how skilled and talented they are, you can get caught in a particular growth/progression, just from lack of outside changes.

With a different company, and a notable mentor this change in perspective has the potential to make drastic strides in his progression as he will be exposed to a different, and possibly rewarding new atmosphere.

And if by chance this expereince doesn't help broaden him for the better, it's only a limited contract. He has enough potential that he is sitting pretty for other teams in the future.
  • + 3
flag sirbikealot (Dec 9, 2009 at 19:29)
plus there is the exposure factor Lapierre is a big company, selling over 110 000 bikes a year and moving into all the big countries with distribution, they really are much much much bigger than Yeti and can give Sam more than Yeti can in terms of marketing Sam as an athlete on the global scale
and then ofcourse what DH racer in their right mind would turn down an opportunity to ride/train with the greatest DH racer ever
