Interbike 2008 - Santa Cruz V10, Nomad and Jackal - The Lost Interbike Files!

Santa Cruz bikes are hands down one of the most desired frame manufactures in the world and by looking at the 2009 line up, you'll know why. Since they already have a very versatile stable of frames, it's all about refinements and ground out re-modeling these days. Santa Cruz knows that you can always make things a little better and that riding styles dictate what riders need and want to get out of their bikes.
Take a look inside at the all new Nomad and Jackal and Greg Minnaar's V-10 in picture and videos:
Take a look inside at the all new Nomad and Jackal and Greg Minnaar's V-10 in picture and videos:
Greg Minnaar joined the Syndicate this past season and managed to pilot his brand new SC V10 to the top of the overall rankings on the World Cup DH series. We all know he's an amazing rider, but a lot has to be said for the V10 too. Mike Ferrentino of Santa Cruz bikes takes us through the V10 and its race winning ways.
Highlights:
-254 mm of rear travel
-carbon upper link and mudflap
-sexy as hell
-podiumed at more events than any other bike in 2008
Santa Cruz V10:
For 2009, we get to see the all new Nomad in all its beauty. The next generation of VPP technology is present with revised shock rates and an all around re-design. Grease ported lower links make maintenance a lot easier and will give bearings a longer life span. The Nomad is the bike that set AM riding on its ear and made other companies listen. This is the style of bike that makes MTB riding fun for everyone out there.
Highlights:
-carbon upper link
-1.5" head tube
-160mm of rear travel
-ISCG05 guide tabs
-greater standover height
-15mm pivot axles rolling on angular contact bearings
Santa Cruz Nomad:
The Jackal might as well have gotten a new name too as there isn't much in terms of similarities between the new frame and its predecessor. The Jackal is here to hit up your local jump spots and do one hell of a good job at it! Short and stiff chain stays, lower stand over height and ready to throw down.
Highlights:
-better stand over
-no hump to hit when kicking your feet over the top tube
-new adjustable rear drop outs for single speed or geared set ups.
-two sizes
Santa Cruz Jackal:

That's it for lost files, hope you enjoyed some sunny weather and shiny parts during the white outside that a lot of you are facing these days. Have a great holiday season,

All Sicckk
Yeah they are, all the SC bikes are sick. I remember an article in NSMB awhile back that was praising the versatility of the VPP on each bike, said something like..
"The Blur is the college bound daughter of the family; lithe, firm, and tight. The V-10 is the stoned teenager; it just eats up anything in its path. And the VP Free is the disillusioned twentysomething; not quite sure where he's going but sure to leave a trail of destruction in its path."
Well put!

whats up with those ugly arrow things? they just look like really big scratches all over your bike, no fresh
Ugly arrow things? You mean the field with skulls on the plants?...oh those ugly arrow things! The bike looks sick.
ya the old one looked awesome and was strong but hes right it was hard to get your feet over the old one
the new one is soo much sicker. although the old one was original, the new one is soo light and is set up so prime 4 djing
Anyone who says its hard to "get your feet over" the toptube is rediculously wrong..It makes no difference guys.
yeah really, i don't have a problem, if you say that, your just lazy or too rich to give a damn and you get another frame
the light side would be better but could just get light parts
maybe they will bring the curvey one back
maybe they will bring the curvey one back
Yeah, that thing is super sweet! That's crazy what dude says in the video too, that between SC & Intense, 5 of the top ten world cup point finishers were on VPP bikes.
Never said he didnt. I was expressing my opinion... Everyone on this website is a f*cking critic. Just read a comment and accept it for what it says. Get on with your life.
Says he whos criticising your comment. But oh well. I can be a hypocrit if i feel like it.

There was nothing Good about the old jackel, it was the worst hard tail in the world. atleast not it looks half fit.
The V10 looks so much better now that its not so bulky.

i thought Rachel Athertons bike would have podiumed more than a v10, as she was top 3 (not 5) all year?
but there wasnt only one rider using a v10 on the podium, there was the athertons using the commencal, and 4 other's using the v10 to podium success...

I'm guessing that it's because they are working on a V8 style bike. I scaled down V10 with less travel is the word on the trails.
i don't know about them falling apart? i do know that a lot of people who got them as a long travel AM bike or DH bike would get a bit shorter shocks on them though because to lower the BB hight on them cause they were built for free riding, as for a tank, depends on the build i guess, my buddy has one that weighs 29 pounds. and for falling apart if you ride hard, my same buddy has had his for 3 or for years and raced jr x and now semi pro on it and it still rides great. of course sometimes u got to replace the bearings.
yeah and right after he replaces the bearings i'm sure it still creaks like hell when you load up the rear end. Thats the frame wearing out and no amount of money in bearings will solve that problem.
I've worked on a hundred of those turds, the only ones that aren't blown out in the rear ends are the brand new ones, and the ones tiny girls have ridden, and a few others that just got lucky.
if you put an allen key on each side of the pivot axle and tighten it, then take out the one allen key and the first one still spins, it means your frame is dying, and only some serious shit, not bearings will bring it back to life.

maybe he just got one of those lucky ones but i know plenty of other people who have no creaking problems, the creaking is what some people say a famous flaw of the vpp, i always have people ask me so ur nomad creeking yet? or just wait it'll creek like hell in a bit, but what has seemed to work for me is some kind of plumbers tape i think it is that my neighbor gave to me to put in the pivots, works great no creaking so far and its been over a year
they were a lot more careful about the tolerances of the nomad's. but i've seen some of them do it. usually more from neglect. whereas, the vp free's just seem to do it like crazy. i suppose they were maybe more careful on the newer version of those too. v8 should be sweet, the angles on the free were always a little whack. a less travel v10 type thing would be good
ya i defiantly agree that some free's creek and it probably is the older ones cause i just realized my buddy got new links in his so ur probably right, and it would be sick if they did come out with something like that but i bet it will basically be like a socom, i hope they lower the bottom braket but just a bit, other than that i like that the head tube angle is steeper but thats cause im used to it from riding my trail bikes rather than flow blown DH bikes and when i hop on a DH bike i feel like the wheel is way out in front an i got to be over the bars and i just think steeper head tube angles corners a lot better than the slack ones and you can be a little more agressive in throwing them around, but thats just a weird personal thing cause i normally ride a trail bike, i think most people like it a little more slacker.

Yeah, that's why the Norco's have been so dominant on the World Cup circuit... Oh wait, that's right... that's the V-10... Dont be a hater.
is it me or is it that most people who hate on Santa Cruz can't generally afford them. and usually ride Kona or Norco's?
haha looking for positive feedback. no fighting. its just my opinion

yes. vp free is canceled for now. the Bullit pretty much took its place. the single pivot is more reliable and VPP is not needy for a straight up huck bike. (which the V10 is not. its race specific)
the new jackal looks like a mob....the old one was sick and if you were having trouble hitting your feet on the hump then you probably shoulda left your feet on the pedals, cause you got no right doin a no-footer with yer feet that high up on the toptube!
i love VPP and love my noomad and V10. V10 is (in my opinion) the best handling Dh rig i have ever ridden. it excels in every aspect. pedals insanely good. jumps and corners like a boss. and hugs the ground over the gnarliest of braking bumps roots ruts whatever it may be. i love it! VPP i believe is the way to go. my nomad pedals like a damn XC bike when you reall get on it. and the V10 not much worse!
