Sea Otter - Dean Optics and the Pro Gravity Tour

Posted: May 12, 2009

Dylan Dean of Dean Optics and Dylan Designs fame is one busy guy. He was on hand at the Sea Otter Classic to show off his latest goggles to the masses and to spread the word on the Pro Gravity Tour.

We got to talk to him about both, so check out the interviews inside:

Useless. What is the point of having yet another company in the game? Goggles are bloody goggles. I have pretty much a set from all the major companies and they are all exactly the same. When someone makes a dual-layer lens for a bike goggle then it will be something worth the hype.

Yea, its like all those different bike companies, what's the point, they're just bikes. Don't get me started on tire companies, I mean come on, and whilst we are at it, have you seen how many companies are making handlebars? now that's a joke right? handlebars I ask you, its a just a tube right? what's the point in choice? Oh yea, it allows suckers like bonfire who states:

"What is the point of having yet another company in the game? Goggles are bloody goggles. I have pretty much a set from all the major companies and they are all exactly the same"

Who complains, but still owns several sets of goggles even though they're pretty much the same!
You don't like em, don't buy em, simple.
Go figure...

They are all the same. I bought them most of the time because I was retarded and forgot/left mine at home when visiting a resort of sorts. Take the top 5 most common goggles.

They all have triple layer foam
They all have anti-fog coating
They all have a helmet strap
They all have a single-layer non-spherical lens
They all have basically the exact same shape

The only difference being the marketing and the colours.

What I don't get is why companies like Oakley/Spy/Smith, companies that make tons of spherical dual layer lenses for snowsports, don't make an MTB goggle with these features.

You know you can use Oakley's dual layer lens for MTBing, right!? Your (several sets of) goggles won't explode you know!

I agree with bonfire that this is nothing newsworthy. It's just another existing MX goggle mold that has been reused to create a DH goggle. In other words, this goggle frame is not specifically made for MTB. MX helmets are often bigger with different sized and different shaped face openings than DH/Free ride helmets. There are also airflow issues that should be considered. MX is always relatively fast whereas DH and free ride can slow down quite a bit. The decrease in airflow can allow the lenses to fog.

My point is that an MX goggle rebadged as a DH goggle is nothing newsworthy because we've seen it a million times before. The price is good though, and for that price we can't expect anything more than a rebadged MX goggle.

Rooley make a dual layer lens goggle. Seems to work good getting a pair for Angelfire this week end.

Rooley eh? I have not heard of this company before, but will look into that. Finally an innovation in bike goggles worth mentioning.

In the words of Dylan Dean "Ummmm" whats new? Most goggles have those features don't they? Becoming an overcrowded market.
