Winning race teams need great hubs to ensure that they get to the bottom the fastest, without worry of failure. Who does the Syndicate, Sam Hill, Team Yeti and other top racers rely on? DT Dwiss is the correct answer!

Kenny Roberts talks to us about the new line up for this season:
If you want to win races, a good frame can only do so much if the wheels won't spin. At Sea Otter, we were able to sit down with Kenny Roberts of DT Swiss and talk about a few changes to the 2009 wheel line up.
First off is the all new FR600 rim, which is replacing the 6.1D. The old 6.1D rim was what I called a race only rim - it was light, reduced the chances of pinch flatting and never busted. The downside was that it was expensive and dented really easy. As a consumer this was disheartening as you had great wheels that looked beat up after a rocky trail. Now you could bend the dents out, but in the end it was a lot of work for a wheelset. Now they have reworked the whole profile and come up with the FR600. All the changes have resulted in a higher dent resistant rim.
Changes from the 6.1D rim:
-harder alloy
-thicker sidewalls
-more material in the slope of the rim
The FR600 is the rim that DT Swiss also uses in their FR2350 wheel sets. The FR2350 wheels are built up from DT Swiss 440 hubs, FR600 rims and Triple butted Alpine spokes.
The FR2350 is the race wheel of choice on most courses, but when things get smoother and less burly, the top pros will pull out their EX1750s and hang it all out. The EX1750 weighs in at close to 600 grams lighter than the FR2350s. Thanks to the light weight EX5.1 rims at about 500 grams each, the EX1750s spin through the chunder on their way to the podium, just ask Sam Hill what he thinks.
Ok so you aren't a pro, but you are looking for a nice AM wheel set for riding all day and getting rad on occasion. Take a look at the E2200 then. We tested a set last season, click here to see what we thought.
DT Swiss makes some of the most user friendly hubs for servicing. The 240, 340 and 440 are all tool free when it come to pulling the freehub, cleaning and lubing them up for the next ride or race. The all new Ratchet Wheel System (RWS) is DT's answer to the 10mm thru axle too.

So they finally made the 6.1 stronger!
i bought a dt swiss fr 2350 set and they are the worse rims ever! near imposible to get tryes on and off. and soft as cheese! the hubs are sweet though gotta say that
they're made to be soft, they are RACE rims. better you get a rim flat then a flat tire on a race run, now isn't it?

I could've sworn they used Dt Swiss...

"for the f*ckin price personnaly id rather have a bloody flat tire than need to replace the rims"
in a race you wouldn't.

"for the f*ckin price personnaly id rather have a bloody flat tire than need to replace the rims"
and you don't need to replace the rims.. yeh they may have a dent or 2 in.. but they are still structurally strong and run straight.. its just for aesthetics that the rim is dent free

I spent 40 quid on tubes at the last race, trying to fit new tyre's, and i know how to fit a tyre it's just the 6.1s are sooo freking tight and deep. Worst rims ive ever had!
then you need to learn how to put tires properly...
if you think those are hard try a 12 inch rim, they're the worst.

U didn't read that very well "and i know how to fit a tyre it's just the 6.1s are sooo freking tight" .
i believe you're wrong... you think you know how... if you did you wouldn't have gone through so many tubes.
i have put tires on those rims with out any problems.

In a race, id rather lose and have to replace a tube than have to spend f*ckin 300$ for new rims and spokes n labour
are you retarded, a hoop is 100$
spokes 2$ each at the most. unless you go for sapim super light cx-rays
and if you would rather loose a race, then rim flat, then you're obviously not a racer and never will be one.

sry im not made of f*ckin money like you, im not willing to spend like 1200$ on a wheels set thats gonna flat spot the instant some pressure is applied... then have to spend more money, as apposed to buying a set of hopes and a pair of syncros rims, that would run me less than 700$ and would last an entire season. Ive raced before, but im not that into it to the point were im gonna piss away my hard earnd money on a wheelset thats gonna flat spot.

i wish there would be a survey on the people who buy these wheels for the performance and those who buy for looks.
cool wheels either way though
cool wheels either way though
i've never had a problem getting Maxxis, Schwalbe and a few other brand tyres on, learn to put them on properly.
i'm hearing this alot.. they basicly roll faster than any other wheel, but they flat spot more than any other wheel, can someon prove me wrong ?
cause i'm hearing this from poeple who go through these rims once every couple weeks.
there's no ways i'm going to buy those wheels.. BUT their hubs! are a different story

its true the rims are shit man! i had some 729 mavics laced up on my fr 2350 hubs they are sweet but dt rims fail in a big way
they're made to flat spot. the side walls of the rim are pretty soft, so when racing, instead of the tire flatting, the rim does... saving your race run, but killing your wheels. most racers have different sets of wheels for racing and riding... a set of 729s for riding, and a set of dt 5.1s and stans zrt flow for racing.
2200g for AM wheels with these ex5.1 rims, even softer than 6.1d?! on such a price?! lets take very decent hope hubs and mavic ex721 rims with dt champion spokes and U get a 1950g wheelset for half a price!
alpine is better for dh applications.
or, you could take 5.1s lace them to hopes with sapim cx-ray spokes... or just f*ck off with the 5.1 at 500grams and go for the stans str flow at 450 grams.

I was talking about AM application: 5.1 is a damn weak rim for pretty much lot of money. If u want a 500g rim with that low strength save your money and buy alexrims DP20.
regarding the alpina spokes, i had them in my Dh rear wheel and I broke the spoke at the nipple base, just like any other spoke. Furthermore at least for me if I break a spoke its always in that specific place and DT alpina is made exactly in the same way as the dt competition - it is only the hub side that is thicker in alpinas. Therefore i see no point in having additional grams.

in my very own opinion DT rims are weak - its fine with me as long as its not that pricey - sunrims and alexrims offer prodcuts with similar durability at a lower price. Apart from spokes, the DT Swiss is a pretty snobbish stuff IMAO.

lol, i understand that. i you look at the spelling DT Dswiss its incorrect, thnk they changed it on the article now, was jus pointing out the typo
My favorite rim! Great hubs, great design, and weight. Even thoug the rims are a bit soft, it's a damn god wheel. Love it
f*cken Spot on Bloke
They don't pay for them, so they don't give two shits what happens to their wheels. All they care about is staying in the hot seat and having their Mechanic build them a new wheel.
I have the FR2350 wheelset and the hubs are good hubs, but the rims are too soft for the regular purchase. If I was getting them for free, I wouldnt't care but because you pay so much money, the regular consumer want's their moneys worth.
If you didn't have to pay for them at all, would you care ?

Hubs - why buy DT when you can buy Hope
Rims - why buy DT when you can buy Mavic
Spokes - DT all the way.

I'd pick DT Swiss over hope because 1) star ratchet is superior to pawls and 2) they actually have decent seals unlike the Pro 2.
Best there is for spokes, hubs are great too....for hoops though, gotta be mavic. DT hoops (in the past) have been horrible. I remember at the mt7 psychosis in like '05 or '06 when v-10's were coming stock with 6.1s....have never seen so many destroyed rear wheels in 2 days.
i don't think a single person above has read the article...
Changes from the 6.1D rim:
-harder alloy
-thicker sidewalls
-more material in the slope of the rim
Aside from that, I think their hubs are unbeatable.

true, my 240s hubs are one off the finest hubs rolling here... Using King, ..., Hope, but I really prefer DT! Best hubs ever in my opinion!!

DT 440 hubs are a dream to work on and give a nice positive engagement action when riding them. My only beef is that the rear hub is 100g heavier than Hope hubs of the same size 150mmx12mm.
If they trimmed some fat, I'd think of getting a 3rd set for my light wheelset.

I've put plenty of dents in my 6.1D's on my 2350's but been able to pull them all out with adjustable wrenches.
With all those dents, I've never had a 6.1 go out of true!
Mavic rims on the other hand crack with and end up junk! I'd rather have a fixable soft rim than a cracked hard rim
Anywho, for daily bike park riding, the new FR600 should be just the ticket!

Zero Tools sounds good to me. I've just upgraded my wheelset to Mavic XM719s on Hope Pro II's. Need to take the freehub off? Buy yet another tool.
I think it would be a really good idea if there was a thread somewhere on pinkbike where you can say what tools work with what parts. Park tools are expensive but sometimes there's just no other option.

those new wheelsets look real nice, but I think only die-hard DT swiss fans with no reason behind their cause would actually pay over double the price of most other wheelsets for something that has got such an appalling reputation...
Deemax are WAYYYYYY better. DT swiss sucks. I went through so many of their wheel sets after using the Mavix deemax I'll never use any other rim on any of my bikes. Whethere it is AM, FR, DH, Street, etc. They are the best.
how am i? because I prefer a much superior rim. Its preference buddy. Dee max have held up to the places I've ridden where dt swiss has not.
