Sea Otter - Formula Disc Brakes

Posted: May 1, 2009

Formula Brakes have been pumping out top quality stoppers for years now. At this year's Sea Otter Classic, Chris Costello took the time to walk us through the line up and tell us about changes to the program.

Check out the video and pics inside:

Formula Brakes is stoked to bring out the all new R1 brake. It's their lightest offering to date at 270 grams. Forged caliper and master cylinders keep it light, but the braking power surpasses its XC orientation. Check out this new brake as Chris explains all the details in the video:

oh, ok, i can kinda see the resemblance now, i mean like - they both have calipers, a lever, a hose, and a disk. Yeh deffo a rip off there... Facepalm

i think he means the anodized spiders on the floating rotors mate Smile
  • + 1
flag bunkey (May 6, 2009 at 15:10)
oh aye, like thats new aswell... Hope have been doing it since 2006, magura however have been doing it for at least 5 years now. floating rotors are nothing new, and certainly nothing exclusive to Hope tbh.

flag fantaman (May 6, 2009 at 15:31)
Magura does not have floating rotors, that goes the same for Shimano or the new avid rotors.Hope has floating rotors before 2006.Floating rotors are nothing yes but it's been arround for more than 15 years

http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Models.aspx?ModelID=30737 magura doesnt have floating rotors?

and yes, to my point, they have been around for years - anodized spiders were not invented by Hope.

flag fantaman (May 6, 2009 at 16:31)
the magura bat rotors aren't floating because the alloy spider is hold by pop nails against the rotor ring.True floating rotor have there alloy spiders that are bolted with rivets against the rotor ring.Everything is coming from Moto so it doesn't matter. It's good that MTB brakes are using them

surely the attatchment doesnt make a difference? anyway, besides the point: theyre not a copy of Hope, nuff said Razz

The only complaint I have about my ORO K24 is that the lever sits miles away from the bar.

lots of people run 6" disks in the rear on their dh bikes.. im sure a bb7 whould give you all the power you need in the rear.. the front is what gives you stopping power.

If the guy knew what he was doing at Brembo, why is he now with Formula? Not saying they're bad brakes, just seems kind of weird. Just because he worked at Brembo doesn't mean he's Jesus.

To design brakes for Formula and taking the technology from the Moto world is alway's a strong point at Formula. It's already on The One brake

Formula Should consider making a 4 piston brake. Like the new design.

Very good brakes, nice modulation, low maintenance. Easy to service, similar to avids.

Hmmm maybe. Mine are 3-4 years old. Shimano - easy, Hayes - messy.

Ride "The One's" , you will see how extra pistons are not required. They're sick light and they work awesome.

I'm not going to lie so from my simple lever squishy test evaluation, my ultimate's felt a lot more fluid and not gross feeling... but who knows, maybe I'm just super biased
