Sea Otter - Fox Racing Shox and the Athertons

Posted: May 1, 2009

Fox Racing Shox and the Athertons teamed up last season and made quite the impact with both Rach and Gee winning Worlds in 2008. For this year, they are continuing to work even closer together to refine the DHX RC4 rear shock and tune the forks to keep the Athertons on the podiums. Dan, Gee and Rach all spent the winter living down the road from Fox Racing Shox in Watsonville, California and worked directly with the engineers to help bring you the best possible products for your cycling needs.

Check out the interviews with Gee and Dan inside as well as all the info on upcoming 2010 Fox Racing Shox suspension:

32 F-SERIES

The Flagship XC Fork drops weight and competitors

The Flagship XC Fork drops weight and competitors

In 2009 we presented the completely redesigned 32 F-Series chassis improvements including the revolutionary new 15QR system, new crowns, steerers and lower legs which improved suspension performance and rider confidence.

For 2010 we have turned inward, with a completely new design of the FIT RLC & RL damper. The FIT damper uses a unique bladder design, which provides the lowest possible friction for a sealed damper, reduces fluid aeration for enhanced suspension consistency, and reduces unsprung weight for faster wheel response and increased steering precision. The ergonomic, handlebar-mounted remote lockout is now available in both left and right hand versions, offering riders flawless transitions between open and lockout damping modes. Now available with an optional 1.5“ - 1 1/8" taper steerer for added stiffness, the F-Series forks also boast a reduction in both weight and friction throughout the fork, resulting in better small bump sensitivity and increased front wheel traction. From World Cup XC to week-long stage races and everywhere in between, the F-Series forks are the most versatile and desirable cross country forks available.

32 F29

F29 takes your tall wheels farther

Designed specifically for the demands of tall wheel riding, the F29 is available in 80, 100 and 120mm versions. For 2010, our F29 fork is available with the 15QR lower leg option, a tool-free thru axle for fast, no hassle wheel changes and incredible stiffness to weight ratio. Damping performance has again been improved with our completely new FIT RLC and RL dampers.

With a choice of left or right side remote lockout levers and a wide range of rider-adjustable tuning, the F29 is the ultimate tall-wheel fork that takes you where you want to go.

32 FLOAT

Lightweight performer gets taller

Lightweight performer gets taller

Our legendary FLOAT trail fork, with its incredible damping performance and light weight is now available in both 140 and 150mm configurations.

Like its F-Series siblings, the 32 FLOAT gets our all-new FIT RLC and RL dampers for more weight savings and improved damping. Available with an optional 1.5" - 1 1/8" taper steerer for added stiffness, the FLOAT's overall weight reduction and decreased friction throughout the fork result in better small bump sensitivity and increased rider confidence. The new FIT Dampers inside combined with our 15QR system give the FLOAT the best ride control, traction and steering precision for your lightweight trail bike needs. 32 FLOAT: Lighter, more travel, better performance.

Dan talks to us at Pinkbike.com-

Dan Atherton talks to us about last season, the joys of the off season and what to expect in 2009. He explains how nice it was to be so close to Fox Racing Shox in Watsonville, California during the off season and how it helped set up the bikes and to dial in suspension for this coming season. Working directly with Fitzy and Justin on some fork modifications to allow him to push it a little harder and how great that relationship is to have. A quick reflection on the first round of the WC and how it's weird not having Rach around yet this season.

40

Double downhill world champion

Double downhill world champion

At the 2008 World Championships in Val di Sole, Italy, FOX 40 equipped riders Rachel and Gee Atherton were crowned downhill World Champions. This double victory marked the culmination of what we learned during countless hours of testing on the world's most demanding courses, and working with the best athletes the sport has to offer. Great athletes have the ability to adapt quickly to their equipment and then ask for more performance.

Our engineers and race technicians have not only kept up, but anticipated their needs and championships are the result. The 40's purpose-built downhill chassis has been optimized for maximum grip and weight savings, features massive 40mm stanchions and a direct mount stem upper crown. At its heart is our world-class FIT RC2 damper with separate, externally adjustable high and low speed compression damping circuits and a titanium coil spring.

The FOX 40 is a sub 7 pound, full 8-inch travel Downhill Champion.

Gee Atherton tells us about his World Championship winning Fox Racing Shox equipped Commencal Supreme DH:

Bike Rear Shocks-

FLOAT

Our lightweight, flagship FLOAT gets an added boost

Our lightweight, flagship FLOAT gets an added boost

The 2010 FLOAT series of lightweight, high volume air shocks incorporates our revolutionary patented Boost Valve damping technology. Boost Valve was first developed and refined on the most demanding World Cup Downhill courses. This year Boost Valve is brought into the XC, Trail, and All Mountain categories in our RP2 and RP23 level FLOAT shocks. Bumps disappear. You'll wonder where that harsh landing used to be on your favorite trail. And you'll smile as you pull away from your ride group when there's no sacrifice in traction or bump comfort while in the pedaling efficient ProPedal mode of your new FLOAT RP2 or RP23.

DHX AIR

Light meets heavy ... a lightweight package for heavy duty riding

Light meets heavy ... a lightweight package for heavy duty riding

The DHX Air is the heavy-duty trail riding shock of choice in an incredibly lightweight package. The large volume air spring and position-sensitive, velocity sensitive Boost Valve damping offer an amazing amount of stutter-bump thru big hit performance in any type of terrain. With adjustable ProPedal, linear adjustable rebound adjustment, and independent adjustable bottom-out resistance, the DHX Air is ready to get you there fast.

DHX RC4 AND DHX RC2

Downhill prodigy, born on the race circuit

Downhill prodigy, born on the race circuit

The DHX RC4 is a new from-the-ground-up, purpose-built downhill shock specifically engineered to the demands of the world's most brutal downhill courses and the athletes who make them look easy. In only its first year of testing on the World Cup Circuit, the RC4 became the benchmark of performance, helping sister and brother teammates Rachel and Gee Atherton win the Downhill World Championships.

Externally adjustable high and low speed velocity sensitive damping and a completely redesigned Boost Valve for position sensitive ending stroke control, act independently from each other allowing the rider to dial in the perfect balance of traction, small bump compliance and big-hit absorption. A larger diameter shaft lowers internal pressures and increases oil flow throughout the entire shock allowing for a wider range of tuning. Embrace your inner World Champion.

Gee talks to Pinkbike.com about 2008 and the development of the DHX RC4:

Gee Atherton sits down and reflects on his 2008 season and what it was like to chase the WC overall and miss out on it in the end. He talks about the high points of winning the World Champs and how it was a turning point in his career. Competing in the Red Bull Rampage was a huge event too for him to participate in, despite taking a digger and being out for the finals. The crash put him in to physio, rather than training, so he explains that he's not feeling up to par, but is getting close and that 5th place in South Africa is only the beginning and that he's gunning for number 1 again. Gee mentions the lack of Rach at the races too and what that is like. Working on the development of the Fox Racing Shox DHX RC4 has been a big highlight over the past year too. Testing it at all rounds of the 2008 WC DH series and then spending the winter in California further tweaking it.

New FIT RLC and RL damper - All new from the ground up. Lighter, Plusher and more traction, control and performance.

The FIT damper originally designed for the demanding rigors of world cup downhill racing is now redesigned to meet the needs of cross country, trail and all-mountain riders. Found in our RLC and RL models throughout our 32 mm fork line, the FITs decreased weight and improved performance make our new FIT damper an important part of the recipe for your lightweight bike needs. Get FIT and feel the difference.

15QR

Say goodbye to road parts on your mountain bike

FOX and Shimano developed the 15QR system to improve the lives of Cross-Country and All-Mountain riders everywhere. The tool free 15QR Thru Axle makes for fast wheel changes and increased stiffness to weight ratio. The 15QR offers a lighter system weight than a 20mm Thru Axle and greater stiffness than a standard 9mm open dropout. Welcome to the new world order.

The 15QR system is ideal for 32mm forks and has the same strength characteristics found on forks with 20mm thru axles.

Compared to a 9mm open drop out, the 15QR system greatly increases torsional and transverse shear stiffness, resulting in improved steering precision and front end confidence.

With our clockable thread, there is never a need to unthread and re-adjust the QR nut. The QR lever will always end up in the proper position for optimal axle tension.

Every rider can now enjoy quicker, tool-free wheel changes from one side of the bike.

AXLE STIFFNESS: A properly designed thru axle system is going to provide better torsional and transverse shear performance than an open dropout axle system. FOX and Shimano chose the 15X100 as the appropriate blend of weight, stiffness and packaging for the XC, Trail, and light duty All Mountain applications.

TRANSVERSE SHEAR: A 25 percent increase in transverse shear stiffness means the fork legs function as a single unit, improving suspension performance and front end confidence when forces on the wheel are not even on each side - rocks, roots, ruts...mountain biking.

TORSIONAL STIFFNESS: FOX's legendary torsional stiffness is further improved by 15 percent for increased rider confidence.

CLOCKABLE THREAD: You never have to adjust your QR skewer nut to find the perfect tension. Set it and forget it.

BOOSTVALVE TECHNOLOGY

The ultimate pedaling platform meets bottomless downhill plushness

Boost Valve is Fox's patented position sensitive damping technology, which comes in several different application specific configurations:

-Boost Valve damping can be utilized in the beginning of the stroke to achieve propedal pedaling efficiency.

-Boost Valve damping can be utilized at the end of the stroke to provide a bottomless feel and confidence inspiring ending stroke control.

-Boost Valve damping can be utilized throughout the stroke of the shock, preventing suspension overshoot and unwanted rider-terrain induced motion.

After years of developing and racing Boost Valve equipped shocks we've garnered an understanding of where and how to apply this versatile and high performance tool. The result, a new from the ground up DH shock, the FOX DHX RC4. The FOX DHX RC4 utilizes Boost Valve position sensitive damping for the last 1/3rd of the shock stroke where the confidence to launch big, or the control when a landing transition is not perfectly hit, can be the difference between winning and merely staying upright.

The integration of Boost Valve technology into our FLOAT RP shock family is an entirely new application for this precise race oriented tool, mating our World Cup proven Downhill technology with our lightweight FLOAT chassis for increased rider control, traction and bottom-out resistance.

These FLOAT shocks maintain ProPedal pedaling efficiency and the intuitive adjustment scheme you've come to know and love in the RP2 and RP23, and then make bumps disappear and jump landings seem tame. Making this the only shock on the market combining this level of light-weight pedaling efficiency with gravity inspired bump eating performance and control.

You can have the 36 float special ordered with the travel reduced to 130mm or 100mm. My floats came straight from the fox factory dropped down to 100mm. If I want to raise the travel all I've gotta do is rip them apart and move a couple spacers around internally.

The DHX is, I can almost bet, a simple update of the previous platform (I can't be bothered with the marketing stunts that they pull all the time saying that my bike will be 3000% faster with those toys).
And case you are wondering that I talk like this because I don't know Fox, yes, I do have forks and shox from these guys...

Ah, and one more thing just to make you think, by now the productions costs should be lowered already so fox wforks still hard to make as the spould drop the ridiculous prices... but they didn't, why? Are these ace shuttle?

so now the 32's have 150mm travel and are significantly lighter than the 36's, what point is there in the 36's? yeh they're gonna be a bit less flexy, but I'd rather take the weight saving any day!

Its just the 36's now seem to be 'neither here nor there', the 40 caters for dh, the 32's cater for 'AM' - so the 36 is only for people who regularly break their 32mm forks?

A 38mm stanctioned fork would be silly for Fox because they'd have to create a whole new set of internals, lowers, uppers, etc. Also you wouldn't need the increase in stanction size to accommodate 170 or 180mm of travel. I see plenty of people running the 36 line of forks on bikes with everywhere from 5 to 7 inches of travel with no lapse of performance.

they need to take the perspective that marzocchi is. Marzocchi pretty much has a series of forks for all types of riding. I think the 36's should get bumped up because they would exceed other companies in a freeride fork. also fox should make a dirt jump series. with there lightness and technology it would be kiler.

flag ctd07 (May 23, 2009 at 11:27)
it would be a killer waste - you don't need high tech damping and bushing systems for dirt jumping, you just need something primitive that absorbs big hits and launches off lips with relative control

i have been riding fox for quite some time.
the 36 is for peeps who dont want to ever replace their fork, and the talas is nice, cause itll end up on every bike you ever own.
i would rather have a single crown 40 than a longer travel 36.
then all they need is a new crown steerer, cause the 40 internals are already dialed and light, and adjustable down to 6 inches.
if you want a dedicated 4-5 or dj fork in the 36 style, all you need is one socket 32mm wrench and a lil guy for draining the oil. and a few spacers, though on the new ones, you just rearrange the current spacers. it takes about fifteen minutes and i did it in my kitchen without my wife knowing.
fox works. and takes care of the rider quickly.
and crash replacement is phenomenal. after four ((incredibly hard and abusive)) years on a 36 talas, they gave me an 09 for four hundo. and i had it in 3 days.
marzo told me they never recieved my roco and then sent it back to me a month later....
i will never go back!

Yeah Marzocchi hasn't made a good product since 2004 in my opinion. Rock Shox seems to be stepping up their game though, I'm pretty happy with my Pike and Reba. Kinda wish Fox made a cheaper 20mm axle fork.
