Chicoutimi, CA—Cycles Devinci is proud to announce the formation of Devinci Global Racing as a UCI MTB race team for the 2011 World Cup Season. Devinci’s close proximity to Mont-Sainte-Anne, home to the longest running event on the World Cup circuit, makes the launch a natural move for the brand.

The Devinci Global Racing squad features a mixture of podium threats and young standouts; paired with experienced management and top mechanical support.

Leading the DGR charge is 21-year-old Canadian Steve Smith. Smith recently demonstrated his prowess in the most prestigious race of the season, storming onto the podium in 2nd place at the World Championships at Mont-Sainte-Anne. In addition, he captured multiple top-10 World Cup finishes throughout the season.

Smith says, “I’m stoked to have a strong Canadian bike company like Devinci backing me with the bikes I need to win. I know Devinci will be able to offer what I need to achieve all of my goals I have set.”

Joining Smith is New Zealand’s George Brannigan, who was a force among junior riders in 2010. Brannigan led the Junior World Cup series for most of the year, was crowned the Oceania Champion, and nailed a 4th place finish at the 2010 World Championships.

Both Smith and Brannigan will be piloting Wilson bikes from Devinci’s newly launched Split Pivot series. The Wilson is the weapon of choice for all DGR’s World Cup DH events.

“We’ve assembled a great program under the DGR banner—riders, co-sponsors, support staff,” says Gabe Fox, Devinci MTB Marketing Manager. “It’s the foundation for a strong future and I envision seeing our program with some great results.”

For 2011 Devinci Global Racing will target the complete World Cup Series, the US Open, Crankworx and other select Canadian, North American, and European events.

“I’m excited to be making this commitment to World Cup racing, and having Steve Smith on the program is the perfect fit,” says Devinci President, Felix Gauthier. “Smith shares many of Devinci’s core values and I’m looking forward to the season.”

"We're very excited to be teaming up with a great brand like Cycles Devinci and having Steve Smith back home "head to toe" on SRAM products again. Steve proved his potential for winning a World Championship last year and now being the newest addition to our race winning BlackBox program we expect him to take it one step higher in 2011. Go Stevie!" -John Dawson, SRAM's North American MTB Race Manager

Cycles Devinci is a Canadian bicycle manufacturer based in Chicoutimi, Canada. It has led the industry by way of manufacturing expertise and product development since its inception in 1987. In 2011, Cycles Devinci continues to forge ahead with licensing suspension guru Dave Weagle’s patented Split Pivot suspension platform. Combined with the company’s Axis Technologies, Devinci is set on a path for domination. For more details on Devinci and DGR, visit devinci.com

Devinci Global Racing is proudly supported by: SRAM, RockShox, Avid, Truvativ, Fox Head Clothing, ODI, and Schwable.

@Darkstar63 Evil is owned by Dave Weagle, who designed this year's Devinci Wilson's split pivot. Evil doesn't have a full on DH it seems this year for 2011, so basically Evil's 2011 bike = Divinci Wilson. It's not an exact fact but makes sense to me if stevie likes the evolution of Weagle's designs Smile

Very interesting points. I dont really know whats going on with Evil, I dont think anyone really does at this exact moment except for them. I would be very interested to know though, I hear all these rumors about frame failures, you go to Evils website and their latest news bit is from November '09. Then you see these Evil sponsored guys popping up on other teams. Seems to me if they were smart they would let people know what the heck is goin on before their name gets tarnished beyond repair.

i think the alpinestars neckbrace is better than the leatt... iv researched both extensivly and iv found out that you cant break you collar bone if you fully compress hemlemt to brace. The leatt sets nicely on your collor bone and if you get compression the brace will break your bone in a second. But the alpinestars is raised over you collar bone. Just a nifty little tip to help pick a brace when buying one.

yeah but are you sure that leatt and alpinestars' offer the same ammount of protection ? Cos I would take a broken collarbone over a damaged neck any day of the week ...

no, the riders sign a contract with a certain bike company, like in football or hockey, but obviously, if the company doesn't want that certain rider, they won't sign their end of the contract

A rider will aproach a company, whether it be bike, clothing etc, with a sponsorship portfolio ie "I have achieved this and am going to achieve this" If the company likes what it see's, will issue a contract mutually benificial to both parties. But I get what your saying :-)

Great to see Stevie doing so well. The new Davinci looks like a great bike, but only time will tell I guess. As for his kit, a rider goes where the money is, not for the pretiest looking gear Thats why it's called sponsorship, it's not like they stroll in their local bike shop and hand over the cash!

Sad day? A sad day that he is trying to make a better living? That's he's trying to establish a future? Seriously dude, it's all well and good to be organic and home grown, but like anyone wouldn't take a promotion to a different company if they offered more money regardless of what industry you are in.

By the way, I think Stevie's been working with Weagle perhaps for a while and this may be a contributing factor for the move too.
  • + 1
flag RoyalT523 (Jan 26, 2011 at 20:50)
yeah i guess thats true but still i think hes better off with small companies cause at the rate hes going he could blow up a small company like Evil or cove that deserves to be big!
  • + 0
flag norcovpsshore (Jan 26, 2011 at 23:09)
what has evil done that they "deserve to be big over"? if you didnt know, the revolts has problems with the frames breaking and it was hard to get warranty. Not to bad mouth cove but they are known for cracking as well.
Stevie is not better off with small companies whatsoever, bigger companies will offer him more support that he needs to race the world cup. The chances of Stevie winning the WC on devinci is much more likely than on a cove or say knolly, due to the fact neither of those companies could afford to support him throughout an entire season.

Also, DW was not a contributing factor in stevies move. Think back to when stevie was a junior, who was the team manager at cove? Gabe Fox. The same Gabe Fox that helped restart Evil and is now the marketing manager for Devinci. See a pattern?

Go to the DH forum right now, bet there's atleast 3. I prefer to ride a bike that doesn't require input from 16 countries on how to tune a f*cking single pivot.
What ever happened to his POS pedals he built up hype for months for?? What were they..the Staccato 8s or some shit? haha

you won't have any issues "tuning" the Wilson - the Fox tune was developed specifically by Weagle for the Wilson SP after months of testing and it works brilliantly "out the box"

Dirt Magazine here in the UK tested the Wilson SP and said

"Initial thoughts come up hugely in favour of the design characteristics that transfer to the trail. The marketing and theory is matched in the performance. Low down weight, power is transferred to forward momentum efficiently, support in the suspension design, progression, balance points, weight, quietness. There are many, many positives. More than anything we liked the fact that there was a useable range of adjustment in the system. First thoughts? Fresh. We really expect to see a BIG signing for this bike which should be gaining podiums in the next few years. Can’t really find any fault in this one. Full test to follow in magazine"

have a proper look at the Wilson's Split Pivot suspension (you'll soon realise its not a single pivot), and try riding one (I have 3 Wilson SP bikes in front of me right now..) and then see what you think?

Steve Jones of Dirt Mag just tested a Wilson SP and 2011 Demo 8 at Forest of Dean in England, and said the Wilson was totally superior to the Demo, which was actually a big surprise considering the heritage of the Demo Wink

flag getsomesy (Jan 28, 2011 at 10:01)
it is definatly a single pivot. if you look at the main pivot then look back along the main swing arm to the rear axel you will see that there is no more pivots impeding that path. therefor it is a single pivot and you sound stupid.

i am not saying that the demo is a superior bike to the devinci, im saying the suspenison mechanics are.
you can wear what color shirt you want, eat the food you like, and ride what bike you like, you are entitled to those opinions. the geometry, shock rate, setup, look, ect may have suited that particular tester better on the wilson.

personally i have a demo, you couldnt ask for more active, stiff, responsive suspension. on the other hand i am thinking of getting a different bike because the chainstay is a little short for my riding positon and my front wheel washes out more than it should. now this situation does not mean that a hyped up single pivot with some extra bullshit linkage thown on there for fools who say "its not a single pivot" is neccisarily more functional than a horst link.

flag hampsteadbandit (Jan 28, 2011 at 12:44)
if its just a 'single pivot'...

-then why does it have a floating (active) brake? (without resorting to a brake-therapy style bolt-on arm)

-why is the shock fed a specific leverage ratio through the rocker? (not directly off the swingarm like an Orange 224)

-how is the pedalling torque decoupled from the rear axle?

DW's "Split Pivot" is not a single pivot - its a little more complicated than that if you actually look into the concentric dropout, it gives the advantages of a single pivot combined with the advantage of a FSR-style 4-bar

yes the rear axle is carried on a beam rotating about a fixed point which gives an advantageous rearward axle path, but that is where the similarity with the single pivot ends...the rear axle floats within the dropout

nothing stupid about my statement Frown

flag getsomesy (Feb 3, 2011 at 20:53)
single pivots can have floating brakes, doesnt make it not a single pivot. (trek session 88, kona stab, older morewood dh bike, ect)

single pivot bikes can have a link that actuates the shock differently, still a single pivot. (transition tr450, kona stinky, ect)

the issue with pedaling proformance is not torque, we would like to think so but humans are not really that strong. it has to do with the chain line from the top of the rear cog to the top of the front chainring in relation to the pivot. that can be handled with proper pivot placement in conjunction with running a particular size chainring. if you change the chainring size, or less importantly rear cog it will effect the pedaling characteristics on all single pivots, this design included.

this looks to me like a rip off of treks APB design, but flipped upside down. not that that is a bad thing.

it deffinantly does not carry some of the benifits of a single pivot such as: simplicity, one pivot, low unsprung weight, ease of access to the shock and linkage.

rearward axle path? i dont really buy that schpele, once you sag a bike 33 percent you are generally past the rearward part of the arc, unless your riding something like a brooklyn machine works, balfa, trek session 10 ect that has a REALLY high pivot.

anyways this is a good discussion, im having fun.

It's funny how word of mouth about a few frame failures can lead to ignorant comments about shitty quality from people who have never ridden one.
Anyone remember when Norco made a major recall of almost 4000 frames for weak headtubes? which is probably more than the amount of snapped Evils & Konas combined, yet all we hear about on pinkbike is "ooh don't buy a Kona or Evil, they'll snap on you"
The only people entitled to make those type of comments are the few people unfortunate enough to have one of those failures happen to them. To the rest, stop propagating and go ride.

at least they had integrity to recall faulty products.
  • + 3
flag progression (Jan 26, 2011 at 17:25)
 Fair enough.

But a full recall has to be justified, if only a small number of isolated problems come up out of a full production line it's not always in the best interest of the company or even individual frame owners to recall every single frame. They'll look at the problem and determine whether or not it was A. a rider related error (from abuse etc.) B. Manufacturing error (weak weld etc.)C. Design issue D. Could the problem result in an catastrophic failure and seriously injure the rider.
In Norco's case it was a major design error with the headtube/headtube junction which meant all the frames were affected by the problem, which justified a full recall.
My understanding is most of the problems with the Evil frames were cracks in the main links. You wouldn't be able to ride it but I don't think it would cause you to crash, which is certain to happen if your headtube snaps off.
Also most of the problems were discovered in frames from the first production run and that they made adjustments to the design for the following runs, and you can bet if it was a serious issue and Evil just swept it under the rug they'd already be long gone with lawsuits up to their eyeballs.
  • + 1
flag duncanp (Jan 26, 2011 at 19:50)
I don't think it was just the chance of failure that is the issue with the frames. It's also due to the fact that here in the uk warranty replacements were often taking 3 months to arrive.
  • + 2
flag fr-kye (Jan 26, 2011 at 22:33)
Evils do have a cracking problem. I ride with enough people that are on the evil team here in Washington and they almost have all had breaks on their bikes. A few are still good though. I also know people who have cracked their konas and I personally cracked a Jamis about 6 months ago. I lately got a new one though that is the 2011 and much nicer. It's for sale now because I ride on a trek sponsored team but the point of what I'm saying is there's alot of brands that are known for breaking and I can verify for the 09 Jamis for myself. People that don't know shouldn't talk. Go steve smith though!! I think he's Gona rock the devinci this year and get around 6th overall in the world cups. My prediction

flag betsie Plus (Jan 27, 2011 at 12:24)
Evils crack, I got the info from the Evil guy at Crankworx when we were taking a brand new evil crack replacement frame back that was cracked in 6 places (got some nice interesting photos of them too). As for not many of them cracking, he expected to see many of the first batch back.
