Windham gets 2010 World Cup Finals

Posted: Jun 22, 2009

Gravity East Series to Debut the New World Cup Gravity Courses Next Week

Rick “Hodgie” Hodge, Special Events Director for New York’s Windham Mountain, announced this afternoon that the UCI has officially designated New York’s Windham Mountain as the host of 2010 UCI Downhill, 4cross and Cross Country World Cup Finals on August 28-29. Gravity racers won’t have to wait long to get a preview, as the newly completed World Cup downhill and 4cross courses will officially debut for competition next weekend June 27-28 during the Gravity East at Windham Mountain.

Gravity East is the largest gravity racing series in North America. With the addition of Windham Mountain to next year’s World Cup, three of Gravity East’s first four 2009 events have been, or will be, host to UCI World Cup Downhills. The Gravity East at Windham Mountain will utilize both new UCI courses next weekend. The new Downhill course is roughly 3:20 long and based on the very popular course first used at last year’s hugely successful “East Coast Nationals”. There have been additions to both the beginning and end of the course, notably the “Black Bear Slide”, a feature so technical that it will be used only for the Expert and Professional divisions. The weekend will also see the debut of Windham’s brand new 4cross World Cup course when it is used for the second race of Gravity East’s e.thirteen Dual Slalom series. The monstrous course is expected to be nearly one minute long.

Windham Mountain is a well-known skiing mountain and has developed several pro/international ski racers and snowboarders. But Windham’s mountain bike program is very new, with the very first tree having been cut only in April of 2008. But the facilities have already received rave reviews from Olympic team members Georgia Gould and Adam Craig following last year’s “East Coast Nationals”. "You could see how much expertise and hard work went into the making of the course,” said Gould following last year’s debut mountain bike weekend. Adam Craig was even more effusive in his blog, “Every inch of each and every course, Super D, Slalom, Downhilll, Cross Country was manicured in some way or another. Beautifully benched in rolling grade singletrack with problem solving ladder bridges and hand placed rocks to link sections that would be unridable was the norm on the XC track. The gravity courses weren’t the usual fall line skid, they had great flow and were built with an eye toward sustainability. Good stuff overall, thanks, people who live and ride in the Catskills.” Thus far, Hodge and the Windham Mountain staff has been intent on establishing the resort as a first-class competition venue, but their plans call for a full network of lift-assisted and cross country trails to be open for recreational riding by next spring.

Lodging for the Gravity East Races on June 27 and 28 is available at Windham Resort’s own Winwood Inn located in town and surrounded by 17 restaurants. Tent camping available for just $10 per site (per night) and RV parking with hookups is available just 5 miles from the race. More information on lodging and dining options is available at www.WindhamMountain.com.

On-line registration for the Gravity East at Windham Mountain is now open at SportsBase Online. For more information on the Gravity East Series, including a direct link to Windham Mountain, see www.GravityEastSeries.com.

last year windham put on one of the sickest races i have ever been too. i race world cups and us races all over the country, and windham had one of the best downhills i have ever ridden, top 3 in my experience for sure. they have a year to get that 4x course dialed, and the downhill already is dialed. so dont worry, you dont have to ride it anyways!

yeah, even if it does suck. it doesn't mean there going to use that course. i bet there going to have a bunch of professional trail builders come down to build a decent WC worthy course. the event isn't for another year. this is a great way to get people into downhill racing.

These pics are of the roughed in 4x course not the DH course and do not do justice to what the final product will be.It is a work in progress that will eventually evolve into the UCI 4x course that will be utilized for the UCI 4x race this August and also for the World Cup in 2010. A large portion of the course will be completed by this weekend and will be utilized for the Gravity East dual slalom race taking place on June 27.It will be groomed and buffed out and will be ready to rock!

You people see TWO pictures of the mountain and instantly say "this will suck". Get a life. If the UCI deems it good enough to host the WC finals, then theres a damn good chance that it will be a decent course. Dont knock it till it happens.

For all the US riders, this is a great opportunity for the scene here to get some much needed exposure to the sport. Personally - I cant wait.

I dont understand why the UCI has eliminate La Bresse. All the riders liked the track ( Very fastand steep slope).
Besides, there were many spectators it was a good recognition of our sport.
Maybe to knock more hardly in 2011?

the track in the video didnt look like it meant the standards of a UCI downhill course. Although im sure they will make the changes and roughen it up sum. just because you see the "Downhill" course vid on the website, doesnt mean it will be that exact course, it can change! im excited to see one in the US.

Ok Im sorry but American Downhill is not technical. All the tracks are smooth and boring. Only one that looks decent is Diablo freeride park. And this looks smooth as hell. Bad choice by UCI.

flag rideayeti (Jun 24, 2009 at 11:38)
Have you ever even been to the USA.. first of all.. almost all east coast stuff is wet and tech.. and then west coast is fast dry and and out of control.. take northstar for instance.. some of the runs there are insane! and how about Colorado.. there are TONS of tech trails there.. so you are wrong.. the tracks are not "smooth and boring" here.. you just have to know where to look

I;ve seen lots of smooth and boring crap in europe. Stop complaining about it coming here you overzealous monkeys. Bout time it actually spread across the globe... It does happen to be WORLD CUP. Better start making it across the effin world. And id like to see something in china, more in africa, maybe some japanese?? something in canada?? a couple in europe, cause theyre cool tracks, but seriously you people are far too spoiled to be complaining.

For Meaden : You should do some more researches before saying something so stupid like that. I'm sure that you never rode here and don't really know anything about what u r talking about. Next time when u give your opinion on something make sure u r talking about something u know.

sjones10 do you live under a rock? "something in Canada?" We have a world cup here nearly every year. Last year we had two. Both in Quebec. As far as the course goes it looks a little slow but they have over a year to fine tune things should turn out ok and if it doesn't its just one race down, there will be more the next year. 4x could use a lot of work though

Its amazing to see all the Euros complain about one DH race in the US when you guys have several races in Europe. For those us you who think all the tracks in the US are smooth come down and check it out yourself before start writting stuff that you don't even know.
I am happy that the UCI have given US racing a chance now its time for all the US riders to come out in mass to show this guys what a great event this can be.
2010 its going to be the BEST!!!

American, or North American for that matter lets don't forget our Canadian friends, downhill is not technical? - give me a break and come out of whatever village or cave you live in and hit up some places on the east coast like Plattekill, Snowshoe, Whiteface etc. and you will get all the tech you can handle. While Diablo is a great bike park its not representative of east coast downhill.
Windham is going to surprise alot of people - alot of great things are going to happen at that mountain!

Bottom line... there are only two reasons Windham got the WC... first they have the capital backing and two is the proximity to a large population, certainly not because it's the best course... Schweitzer, Angel Fire, Durango, Mount Snow among others come to mind. North America, specifically the US has always struggled in putting on a WC event that draws enough spectators to offset the huge cost associated with hosting an event of this magnitude... but hopefully it goes off well!!!
