Zumbi - 2009 Bikes

Posted: Feb 19, 2009

Source: Zumbi Cycles

ZUMBI cycles manufactures professional hardcore mountain bike frames and parts for the most demanding. Every ZUMBI product is designed in Myslenice, the mountain bike downhill heartland of Poland. Basing on the experience of our main engineer Pawel Matuszynski and top World class riders we bring to life the best, 100% Polish bike equipment for gravity addicted mountain bike enthusiasts. We want to deliver the best frames and parts out there and that’s why every ZUMBI product is manufactured by craftsmen from the aircraft industry who used to work with MIG jet fighters and tested by our riders and designers before getting on the market. Our philosophy: design simple, use the best materials…back to the roots.

Pawel about ZUMBI-
“As the owner and designer of ZUMBI I am an avid DH rider/racer and in my designs I’m trying to accomplish the ultimate ride. I have a masters degree in Engineering. Everything I do is connected with mountains which I love. Besides biking I snowboard, ski and climb. I designed and built my first frame in 2003. We use the best materials like 7020 Oria tubing, 7075 aluminum, Ti6Al4V titanium and high grade stainless steel. All the frame parts are CNC machined and hand welded at our facility in Poland. Our welders are ex-MIG aircraft welders with over 30 years of experience. We are proud becoming a sponsor of a professional racing team this year with top ten World class athletes in DH, 4X and BMX.”

New for 2009:
T-20, 20” wheel trials frame, Quilombo fixie frame. Our flagship DH racing frame, F-44 got a slightly revised geometry with the BB lowered and ISCG mounts. The DH Team and Voodoo frames also got ISCG mounts as standard. We offer our Reaktor headset in full titanium version in limited quantities. We started working with Fox Racing Shox. Our full suspension frames are now equipped with Fox DHX 5 and DHX air shocks custom set by MOJO UK. Besides Fox we continue offering our frames with Avalanche Downhill Racing suspension units.

All our products will be presented during this years Eurobike (www.eurobike-exhibition.de) and EHBE handmade bikes trade show (www.e-h-b-e.eu)

maybe just add that that frame was one of the first dh teams made. It was almost two years raced when that fella bought it and still he got a 1 year warrenty on it.After two repairs we finally replaced the swingarm. Why wont You write bout that??

Anything can brake, I've seen broken V10, Demos, Giants and many many more. This happens when you are using frame !! 1, 5 or even 10 broken Zumbi's ? So what ? how many % of manufactured and sold Zumbis is it ? Any ... How many 2005 demo's 9 broke near the shock mount ... 80-90% ? or more ... Polish people are f... wierd.

I agree that they don't look well, but... they perform great and thanks to simple design they are cheaper. U like all these monocoque stuff and hydroforming? no probs but pay at least 100£ more and carry this bit more weight that comes with it Wink At least it works in practice, Morewood says that their bikes are meant to be simple (so they look) but U pay nearly the same as for Spec or SC...

- optional upper link stiffener brace
so there one thing what you need.. but is optional.. >?
that makes sense.. ?
and everything brakes is very true..but why does the simple single pivot design brake first ? as a race bike you dont do huge drops to my idea.. ?
and a mig was a russian jet.. not polish..i can seriously not believe russia would let polen weld their planes.. and why would a mig welder swop to bikes.. lol .. so..sooo.. nope thats it.. Wink
  • + 9
flag loko (Feb 20, 2009 at 2:25)
dont need the stiffener really on that frame and it weighs
each frame will brake when it hits trees which arent made of of rubber and has marks from that kind of abuse on the swingarm
well Poland was related with Russia before 89 and most of the stuff produced here was sent to Russia. The guys who weld our frames used to work with welding parts for MIG jet fighters back in those days. After comunism fell in 89 the factory "bankrupted".Some of them started working on aluminium bike frames. You dont know Polands history and how everything was f-up here and still there is influence of that bad past today trek boy Big Grin

flag motomysz (Feb 20, 2009 at 3:34)
NorCalNomad - I want to tell you, that polish military pilots are still using very old MIG-27 planes, actually some of them are legal age (planes). While, we bought some F-16 from USA few years ago, and if you'll check closely, some of those fantastic, amazing, new F-16 broke before they arrived to Poland, and they turned back from above Atlantic Ocen. Recently we had huge affair in Poland, when there was a press release thas from 60 F-16 that we have, we are using only half, becuase the rest is constantly repaired.

Polish goverment deciced to buy F-16 because it was best offset offer. Now everybody know that it would be better to buy different planes.

And bout frames being welded by people working with MIGs. It is true, it is welded in the same company, by the same guys. No one said that whole planes were assembled in Poland, but some parts of them were.

flag szfetbb (Feb 20, 2009 at 6:36)
To add something here to mr, U have no damn idea of russian skills in everything connected to metalurgy and metal manufacturing, especially with titanium parts. There was a guy in my city in PL that made a fortune on scrapheap recycling russian jetplanes full of highest quality duralinium and titanium. Furthermore polish welders work all over the world in shippyards, aircraft manufacturing, dman NASA, and they are well damn appreiciated worldwide, so appreciated that there's not much of them left in the country... and u might be assured that the guys welding zumbi frames are the at the best in the whole world. I bet many companies worldwide would kill them selves to get those guys.

flag haronyc (Mar 2, 2009 at 6:01)
NorCalNomad ask your teacher what plane can pull Pugachev's Cobra with that "shitty construction" as MIG. Ask him if F`16 can fly vertically and then suddenly shuts the engines and falls down only to regain control few moments later.. MIGs are like AK-47 that you can keen in sand, mud, water for months and will work with no problem.

NorCalNomad do you know that US sign a contract with Russia to buy Russian Titanium? And that the Russians are the best in welding titanium? When Poland was under Soviet control many technologies and know how came from Soviet union. In some cases it was good school.

I'm studding Helicopter Engineering and I know a few things about aircrafts and aerospace industry. I'm also a big fan of aviation. Mig-29 has one of the best aerodynamical designed airframes. Like F-15 it don't need Fly by wire and other stuff.

Back to the bikes...
Zumbi hardtails are pretty nice but I don't like the way full suspension frames look. Simply not my type.

I do find it so actually... for me it appears that zumbi is almost an ol' RMX but just with a newer geometry and lower wieght. Nevertheless I respect Zumbi as being as a polish No1 in alu frame manufacturing.

I have a 2008 Team DH.

I think its great. Brilliant in the corners.
Also, Pavel was great when I was building the bike up. He replies straight away with any tech questions. Very impressive from a Company owner.

Heres a pic,

I dunno, they look OK, everything gets better with time. I have to say I don't like the orange one because frame designs like that tend to collect a lot of dirt on the rear shock. The trials bike looks pretty damn cool though.

Great to see so many different points of view however they work for the team and if The Don, Gaskell, Mears and Liam and Charley Phillips think they rock that is fine by me. True Pro Downhillers want to test a rig before they sign a deal, its not all about cash and these guys loved them. Zumbi are a special breed, they dont just supply the frames but will fine tune what we feel the need to change, this shows professionalism and respect for one of our main sponsors. Lets remember www.4mountains.co.uk is the team and Zumbi are its sponsor so if you want want of these babies they are doing big discounts so get on line and buy. All comments appreciated.

"Our welders are ex-MIG aircraft welders with over 30 years of experience"

Ummm bike frames are TIG welded generally as mig is dirty and not precise. 10 years TIG,MIG, OXY/ACT, ARC all metals, all positions certified.

Being a mig welder in the aerospace industry means squat about bikes. Frames look nice, but it seems as if you are trying to prove how good they are by that note.

I know 10+ people who weld on satellite parts, rocket parts, and jet fighters, and they still only understand that specific field with that specific type of welding.

Best to just say, you have qualified welders as aerospace has nothing to do with bikes, nor their integrity... and thats coming from a state champion welder...

flag machinist---allan (Mar 2, 2009 at 17:17)
Try a search for "mig aircraft" , they are talking fighter jets not mig welding.

way to be ignorant "state champ" I know you really want to impress us with your vast knowledge of welding but you should really read the first paragraph of this blog.

flag rffr (Mar 2, 2009 at 20:07)
I was mistaken...

As for my point, none the less, there was no need to say how in depth it was. Aircraft, race car etc, its all the same boat.

As for trying to impress, I could care less, I'm a graphic designer now and could care less about welding... Simple.

And normally, welders don't say they are a mig aircraft welder. They say they are an "aerospace" welder as all the fighter jet companies are "aerospace" companies like Lockheed and boeing. So the mistake could have been easily avoided by actually being specific to the industry they welded in rather than the product they welded on.

flag rffr (Mar 2, 2009 at 20:12)
btw my pops works for an aerospace company, hence me being so critical about it. The comment was just to sound flashy rather than just be to the point... really what my point was all about. Welders go by industry, not by product they weld. You won't see someone that works in the automotive welding industry saying I'm a frame welder. They will say, I'm a welder for the automotive industry. Welding creduentials are all about industry, not product. Simple. Sorry for the spam of posts.

Sick frames none the less.

Why cover up the pedegree of the welders (who have been welding bikes now for years!)

flag mattsicles (Mar 3, 2009 at 5:25)
And you have a state champion welder? WTF? In that case I am Wiltshire roof-tiling county champion, North of England Junior swingball champion (1993), Wessex Van driving runner-up (3 years running), and electric phillips screwdriver using world record holder.

flag rffr (Mar 3, 2009 at 16:46)
pedigree of the welders? Did you even read what I put? did it not register in your head?

And yes, I was a state champion welder, at age 17. I've long gone from welding besides doing truck lifting, sport truck etc fabrication. I grew up, thats all. Interests take me other wise.

O and mattsicles, around here, in the USA, we have leagues like VICA to compete with welding. Your country is so small I doubt there is any. O and to avoid your comment of you don't know squat about britain, I'm half british and have traveled there many times. They don't have squat compared to what we have for compititions in welding etc... but just because Britain is so small, nothing to do with how good people are. I'm sure if vica was in Britain there would be many people competing. Sadly you don't have such a thing.

flag mattsicles (Mar 4, 2009 at 0:28)
sadly? SADLY? this just gets better! there is a welding LEAGUE! FPMSL! Hey fella if you were state champion at 17 and top of the VICA league you should have stuck at it, you could have earned some big BIG money, what with the televised international welding cup competitions, and massive transfer fee's you could have earned moving from Hicksville ARC "Storm" to The New York "Soldering Irons". Why is it the Americans see everything as a competition? Welding is a JOB, and not a very interesting one either.

flag DunX (Mar 4, 2009 at 0:42)
Yep t3h1337r you are so rite.

We are so small we dont have any competitions.

Its a real shame we have most of the best cyclists in the world then.
  • - 1
flag rffr (Mar 4, 2009 at 14:18)
What does that have any relation to having welding compititions? It doesn't. O and the "we have most of the best cyclists in the world" statement is far from true. Get over yourself.

flag DunX (Mar 5, 2009 at 0:39)
No its not.

How many world champions has the UK got across cycling.

Most of the DH, Nearly all of the track, womens road cycling.

Oh and all the olympic medals!

It must be because we arnt wasting our time doing welding comps!

flag rffr (Mar 5, 2009 at 16:11)
Wasting your time doing welding comps? What does welding have to do with bike racing. I never related the two as they have 0 in common. NTM there is more to this world than just bike racing... Way more.
